about the noise been made by the gasmen?

It's all go here ATM. We have National Grid replacing the gas main, the infants and junior schools across the road each having a large extension and re-surfacing work done in the car-park and we are having our own driveway replaced.

There are literally 100s of men working here from 8am and the gas people don't finish until 8pm. At one point his morning there was a an articulated lorry delivering bricks over the fence to the school, 2 huge "vacuum drills" drilling holes in the road and sucking up the debris, 11 gas vans and the dustbin lorry trying to get down the road too!

To say it's noisy is an understatement but the school builders are being as considerate as possible, my builders come and do their work quietly (apart from when using noisy equipment but that's not much) and have lovely manners. The Gas people, well. There are dozens of them working from one end of the road to the other and all day long they are "bantering". So when there is a lull in the drilling etc all you can hear is men yelling from one end of the street to the other and the language is pretty ripe too.

AIBU to think that the disruption caused by the work itself is a pain but one of those things and we'll live with it but that the men themselves should be more respectful to the people living around where they are working? Or am I a miserable old cow and it's good that they're enjoying their work?

And why is it that for every man in/digging a hole there will be 2 more leaning on the fence watching?!

Yabu should they work in silence? What an odd post! Oh and for what it's worth they are doing our road and some of the surrounding roads so I know how noisy they are.

LastTango · 30/07/2014 23:12

Do you mean 'being' made. I think you do.

ICanSeeTheSun · 30/07/2014 23:17

How dare people work.

abigamarone · 30/07/2014 23:18

Depends on how 'ripe' the language is really, otherwise I'd be happy it was all being done at once and will all be over with.

WooWooOwl · 30/07/2014 23:22

I wouldn't have a problem with them talking loudly, I would have a problem with them swearing loudly outside my home.

Frontier · 31/07/2014 07:13

Yes, thank you Tango, but i would never be so rude as to go on a thread just to correct someone's spelling/grammar/typo

ICanHearYou · 31/07/2014 07:17

Tango surely you'd rather know the difference between past tense/current tense? I am not sure it was meant negatively and changes the whole thread actually.

Anyway, yes YABU about them making noise and chatting to each other, if they are swearing in front of children then thats a bit much but really you should be able to teach your children not to swear (if thats your beef) regardless of the gas men.

They need to have 2 people stood around incase something happens to the guy in the hole.

BranchingOut · 31/07/2014 07:19

I think, if you want a regular supply of gas, you just have to let them get on with it.

Ear muffs?

But if they get too 'ripe' then maybe ask to speak to the foreman.

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2014 07:19

Can you kill them and then claim they were bus surfing?

londonrach · 31/07/2014 07:22

Tbh if the work needed not much you can do. I reported a gas leak once. The smell was awful outside the flat. The next two nights men were out there overnight with floodlights sorting out the problem. The first night was once as there were 100s of men and they were digging up the road. They closed the road too. Just grateful they were making it safe. I was told it was so bad they were considering moving us to other accommodation. The language is something that can be dealt with,

TiggyD · 31/07/2014 07:22

They need to mind their language. They need a stern librarian to give them a look.

londonrach · 31/07/2014 07:23

First night worse not once

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2014 07:25

Are you offering tiggy?

whois · 31/07/2014 08:01

Yabu should they work in silence?

Not silence, but there is no need to shout up and down the street. It's part of being a 'considerate building site'.

MoreBeta · 31/07/2014 08:05

"There are dozens of them working from one end of the road to the other and all day long they are "bantering". So when there is a lull in the drilling etc all you can hear is men yelling from one end of the street to the other and the language is pretty ripe too. "

Sounds like your average Friday night drunk thread or sweary thread on MN. Grin

NewtRipley · 31/07/2014 08:12

I think the bad language is something you should raise with whoever seems to be in charge.

And people who come on to correct grammar look like arses

McFlickle · 31/07/2014 08:19

We just had National Grid doing this in our street as well. Yes the machines are so noisy, and the guys do shout to be heard but there's not much you can do about that.
However I also did not like the unnecessary swearing being carried out at top volume. I complained about it on the feedback form. There is also a number you can call with queries or complaints.

RiverTam · 31/07/2014 08:23

this is one of the reasons why I love an Eastern European builder - so that I don't have to understand them swearing their heads off and talking rubbish from dawn till dusk.
