to think that diesel cars should be taxed more

My small car costs 130 in road tax, my friend has almost the identical car but diesel and hers cost 30.

Diesel cars are way worse for people and London has the worst air quality in Europe thanks to diesel. It was a big con.

In the summer its horrific, diesel cars exhausts make black clouds and I have to keep my window shut as it affects my asthma

erm tax is linked to emissions so I am betting your car is fairly polluting - yabu

TheHouseatWhoCorner · 30/07/2014 19:15

YABU.

ilovesooty · 30/07/2014 19:15

Diesel cars cost more to fuel. Buy a diesel car if you want to pay less road tax.

Namechangearoonie123 · 30/07/2014 19:17

Nah your wrong, my diesel pollutes less.

Get a better car Wink

Olga79 · 30/07/2014 19:18

I agree that if road tax is calculated on emissions it should include some measure of particulates as well as CO2

FrankSaysNo · 30/07/2014 19:19

We pay more per litre for fuel

firesidechat · 30/07/2014 19:19

Em, isn't the government thinking of doing this anyway. Have you been listening to the news?

It's not an original idea OP, but all those diesel drivers who were encouraged to buy diesel cars a few years ago may be a bit peeved.

firesidechat · 30/07/2014 19:22

Think I meant erm not em. Em looks all wrong.

EveDallasRetd · 30/07/2014 19:26

I have a large 1.8 diesel and my road tax is....free.
It's on emissions and mine pumps out less than your car does.

My 1.2 petrol Punto was £130, my new 1.9 diesel Punto is £15. It costs me more to fill it, but the fuel lasts longer and the car is much nippier.

I wouldn't go back to petrol ever.

Nohootingchickenssleeping · 30/07/2014 19:28

It's the DPF filter in the exhaust. I don't have one and my diesel car costs £130 tax. Do your research.

Varya · 30/07/2014 19:34

The tax on older diesel cars is rising astronomically, to persuade drivers to buy a newer model, but many people are happy with their diesel cars and don't want to change them, but they still have to pay ever-increasing car tax as they are not wealthy enough to buy a new car.

BramblePie · 30/07/2014 19:36

I have a diesel car and my road tax is £0.

Because my car is regarded as economical and doesn't pollute the world like your car, OP. :)

ZenNudist · 30/07/2014 19:42

Mine is £30. It even turns itself off standing in traffic, back on as soon as you touch the accelerator.

I'm not kidding myself driving is environmentally friendly, it just worked out this is the car I like.

FraidyCat · 30/07/2014 19:44

I think the pendulum is swinging away from diesel now. New diesels have DPF (particulate filter) so are much cleaner than old ones, but DPF can be very expensive to maintain, it may clog and need expensive (thousands) repair if you don't do enough mileage/right sort of driving.

angeltreats · 30/07/2014 19:44

I have a 2 litre diesel with a DPF and it costs me £280 a year to tax!

BlinkAndMiss · 30/07/2014 19:47

The black clouds are from a fault with the car, not because they are diesel.

YABU

I'm sure if it was true that diesel cars were just as bad for the environment then they would be fortune in tax too, this government are exactly famed for giving something for nothing now are they?

Redcoats · 30/07/2014 19:49

My diesel costs £280 per year. And it doesn't produce black clouds because the exhaust isn't broken.
If you want to pay less road tax, then get a more efficient car.

deakymom · 30/07/2014 21:30

i hate this nonsense really if you town drive regularly get a petrol and if you long distance drive get a diesel yes it would be lovely if we could all afford cars that didnt pollute and were brand new but by taxing all people with diesel cars you are yet again taxing people trying to save money because they live in an area and work in another public transport is too expensive so you tax low income workers again thanks! any chance of you fixing the potholes i use more fuel avoiding them than anything else? no? not surprised Angry

FryOneFatManic · 30/07/2014 21:38

My diesel costs me £30 road tax, because it's cleaner than some. DP's newer petrol car costs more in road tax.

I've had it for 5 years, and it's 11 years old. I'll keep running this nice little car until it's no longer economical.

And I have seen many petrol cars with black clouds too (and some white clouds, just as bad...).

firesidechat · 30/07/2014 22:21

They were saying on the radio this week that when diesel cars are used in cities they produce more nitrogen dioxide which is bad for peoples lungs.

That appears to be why they are having a rethink.
