To take another day off work tomorrow?

Nc'd in case I out myself at work!

Had to take my toddler to A&E last night with a head injury, they weren't happy with how he was responding, so they kept us in overnight, and didn't discharge us until this afternoon. We've been home about an hour now. I had about 2 hours sleep, the staff at the hospital were great and we had a private room on the children's ward with a pull-down bed for me, but we didn't get in there until about 2am (we were in kids emergency dept previous to that), I couldn't sleep well as I was worried, and then DS was up for the day at 5:30am.

He's been given the all clear which is great, but he was tired and grumpy at the hospital so needed carrying and holding a lot (3yo so not small!), and we had to go home by public transport as a taxi would have cost about £50. I had to carry him as he was sleeping for half the journey, I hadn't packed his shoes in the rush or taken a buggy as we were taken in by ambulance. (So daft, but I thought we would be back the same night and wasn't really thinking straight)

So as well as the worry and lack of sleep, I'm aching all over from carrying him. I have low-level joint problems that usually don't cause too much pain but my arms and neck are really sore and stiff now.

Work were fine with me having the day off today (they are lovely) but I'm worried that I might not be in a fit state tomorrow. I teach adults and have to do a lot if thinking on my feet and use a lot if energy, not really any time to sit down or get headspace, it's full on and it's a pretty long day. Even typing this I'm struggling to spell things right and remember the right words..

What would you do? Would you trust that you'd get a good night's sleep and go, or take the day off? (DS will probably go to his childminder if she's ok with it if that makes a difference...)

Take the day off, you need a rest and will not be able to do your job properly if you are exhausted. Am sure they will understand. Hope your little one is ok now and you get some sleep tonight.

Take the day off, you need a good rest. Send DS to the cm and stay home, else you will sure be a wreck on Friday.

I'd get an early night and see how I felt in the morning.

IMO unless your ds is unwell or you feel physically incapable of work in the morning as a result of your joint pain (in which case you could legitimately call in sick) you should go in.

hamptoncourt · 30/07/2014 17:19

I manage a team of tutors. I would rather know the night before so I could try and get a replacement organised.

Do you think they will be able to get someone in to cover you? If not then you should try to get an early night and go in. If you are easily replaced then stay home, but tell your boss today.

Thanks for the opinions! Cover should be quite easy to arrange, they usually tell that day's cover teacher to be on standby for the next day as well just in case. But I'd still feel guilty!

Joints feel awful at the moment, and they're usually worse the day after but so hard to tell until it happens. I wish I could just take the day off without feeling guilty, would make things so much easier! I usually go into work even if I'm not feeling great..

I wouldn't take the day off (even though I would want to). You will be tired rather than unwell and that's not a reason to phone in sick - unless you mean take a days annual leave?

Jinsei · 30/07/2014 19:32

If you're taking annual leave, then that's fair enough - presumably they will only authorise it if they're happy for you to take the time off.

You should only take time off sick if you are actually sick. Only you know whether you are or not.
