Ah, I can easily see how this might come out in a way you didn't intend in second language.

I'd personally cobble together some excuse that he I was working so he was in childcare or was going to stay with relatives or something. Not sure I could be that honest, although at least it saves the other parent asking again.

Ah second language might explain it. Dd has a friend whose mother speaks excellent but not quite fluent English and she can be a bit abrupt or blunt in text messages. To speak to face to face she is absolutely lovely and not at all how she comes across in texts, I think it is just a bit of a language barrier.
