i see loads of threads on mumsnet with really interesting looking titles, that i may really enjoy and want to join in, if i had the faintest idea what they were about.

I think it would be fine to go in and ask what it's about - i keep meaning to join in with Crepey people but then I forget. It's not just my skin that's fucked it's the brain too.

Tbf the chalet school threads are shite I dont think I was posh enough to read those when I was a kid far less get nostalgic as a grown up

As it is such a large forum, with so many (too many?!?!) topics & threads you are bound to get some long running threads where only a few people have stuck around & they get to 'know' each other quite well. The tennis thread I post on (it's in Telly Addicts, not SPort, most oddly) is a bit like that. We've got to know each other & also Perv & fight over tennis players as well as randomly gossip. But if any one new pops in we are thrilled to have others there - we got a lot of other people joining in over Wimbledon & it was great.

Could someone link to the Crepey thread, please - looking in the mirror I certainly belong there!

I don't think you're alone in sometimes being confused about threads. But I don't remember anyone else starting a thread about it, I think most people just shrug and move on.

I've noticed the type of threads you refer to, but I just mostly skip past them in the same way that I don't go up to random groups at parties interrupting to ask what the conversation is about.

On the other hand, the wavers threads waves at Dido do tend to state what they are about at the top as they were started for anyone who feels invisible on the huuuuuge site that is MN. There is an established core, but all are welcome

I agree with Paggy as usual.

They're just like minded people having a chat. It's a bit like if you go to a party and there's various groups of people talking about different things. You don't have to be involved in all the conversations to enjoy the party, you just mingle and join in with what interests you.

I tend not to do many long-running threads as they often require quite a lot of time to keep up. I should rejoin the Paulers (Paul McKenna weight loss hypnosis) though. [big fat heifer emoticon]

That's just people posting on the thread so it comes up in "threads I'm on" - a useful navigation tool where you can see all your current bunfights conversations.

I started to read the Crepeys threads last year and probably posted something in the spring. Never once have I been made to feel unwelcome, and I am sure I am the oldest of all. It is just pleasant people trying to support one another, with a little bit of style and beauty thrown in.

You will never find out if you don't try.

Very like RL, really; you have to be prepared to stick your neck out a bit and take the plunge, but most groups of people like having newcomers, I think.

I've read the titles and thought they were about something else before, clicked and realised it was a long running thing and felt I had something to add to an interesting conversation.

I have to say on those occasions I was never made to feel excluded or that that it was 'cliquey', the other posters on the thread spoke to me and replied to my post like they did all the others.

Oh but the long running threads are the best thing. You just have to dive in there on one you like the look of. I used to be a very intermittent poster until I discovered Pseudo's thread - waves to Pseudo - now I check in every day if I can ( even if it is just marking my place). I enjoy reading Pseudo's thread as much as (if not more sometimes!) than listening to The Archers itself. to Pseudo.

I know it obviously refers to foetuses, but I've never understood the "penis Dragon" reference.

I was curious about the swagger thread so had a quick look.
It really really made me laugh but as I didnt watch the programme it made little sense but those posters have a bloody cracking time. Still makes me chuckle.
