To commute and park in London?

Hate travelling and much happier driving but realise I'm bonkers for even contemplating it, BUT can anyone advise if I can drive and park for the day (weekday) around the Sealife Aquarium or The Shard ??!!

Buses do not take cash anymore

Waterloo to London Bridge (if you're going to Guy's) is just two stops eastbound on the Jubilee Line. Station is right by the hospital and the Shard.

St Thomas' is a bit of a walk, or Jubilee line Westbound 1 stop to Westminster, then less of a walk.

If you get on the tube going the wrong way, you just hop off and hop on the right train. I once took 24 children the wrong way on the Tube. Twice. In one day. That was embarrassing. And made us late!

Hope all goes well tomorrow.

Walking along the southbank is nice, lots going on, things to see. You can't miss the Shard, it's huge and Guys is right outside.

If you're only half hour away then won't you need oyster for the train? If you're within zone 6. You can get one at the station, or an all day travel card but this will work out more expensive. I doubt you'll need the bus in Central London if you're walking from Waterloo.

Can you still pay on the bus? I get so used to swiping with oyster I have no idea anymore. It's not cheap though to pay as you go.

If you buy a one day travel card tomorrow, that will cover bus as well as tube. As well as being an easy walking to Guys, it is quite scenic too. Everyone on London is used to being stopped & asked for directions so, if you're unsure, stop someone & ask. You may be unlucky & get a tourist the first time but the second or third won't be.
Once you're as central in London as Waterloo then the underground really is underground so you'll be going down some pretty big escalators to get to it so it would be quite an achievement to accidentally get on it! The trains, platforms, signs etc all look different to above ground ones so there is really nothing to worry about as you will not be able to accidentally get on a tube.

Buy a one day all zones travelcard , which you can use on the train into Waterloo and on the buses and tubes.

It's a 10 min walk from Waterloo station to the river.. Lots of black tourist signs dotted everywhere with distances and directions, you won't need a bus!

phoebeflangey · 28/07/2014 22:53

Some great advice thanks all :) wish me luck!

You'll be fine. And the South Bank is my favourite bit of London, and the walk along the river is brilliant. Take lots of time, and enjoy it!

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 28/07/2014 22:56

If you go out of Waterloo at the end of the station (turn left as you come off the train), down the main steps, turn left, cross over the main road (you can't miss the pedestrian lights) and just walk straight. You'll be at southbank. Follow the Eye, you can't miss it. Turn right along southbank for Guys, left for St Thomas'. Actually you can just walk along the road to Tommys, you don't even need to walk along southbank, it's give minutes away.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 28/07/2014 22:56

*five.

Teddybeau1988 · 28/07/2014 23:02

Aww I love Southbank. Unfortunately DD2 is terrified of the mimers so we have to avoid :-(

Teddybeau1988 · 28/07/2014 23:05

Is mimers a word? The people who mime lol

phoebeflangey · 28/07/2014 23:11

Pobbles how long do you think it will take to walk to guys from waterloo (via south bank ) :)

It will take more than 30 minutes to walk from Waterloo to Guys, but it is a lovely walk along the river and you will see many of the major sights of London.

Follow signs to The London Eye or The Thames Path from within the station itself. When you get to the river, turn right!

There will be signs to Guys Hospital when you get to London Bridge. You will have gone past Blackfriars Bridge, the Millennium Bridge and Southwark Bridge and probably a few more than I have forgotten, and Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, by the time you get there.

If you don't have time for the walk, then yes take the Jubilee Line eastbound for 2 stops on the tube.

If you find a bus to go on, you will need a travel card of some sort, but you can also pay with a contactless debit card if you have one.

You could even get an overground train to London Bridge from Waterloo East - just go up the escalator at Waterloo! I always prefer to walk down the Southbank :)

Best wishes for your appointment.

phoebeflangey · 29/07/2014 12:57

Well I've got here, thanks to all that helped last night. I got the train to waterloo then walked along the Southbank, I have got a ticket for London bridge to waterloo east if I need it too :)
