To be considering doing a rain dance? Neighbour's children issues

We are one week into the holidays and I am already at the end of my rag!

Basically, neighbour has two DS, the younger is about 3 and the elder is a year above my 5yr old DD at school. I know the mum casually, from school run etc, she admits the boys are handfuls but nothing more and 'boys will be boys'

So far this week they have played out in their garden everyday, I'd be VU to have a problem with that but this is how each day goes......

DS1 will bash/take toy from/hit/push DS2, DS2 will emit an ear-splitting shriek/scream - seriously this is so loud I thought it was my own DD in another room at first, and they live a few doors away. Mum doesn't intervene beyond a 'don't do that please'. Shrieking slowly dies down, cycle repeats itself a few minutes later.

In between cycles DS2 will emit the same shrieking and screaming if he wants a drink/sweets/lolly/certain toy. So the shrieking is pretty much constant. Meanwhile the mum sits on a sunlounger posting pics of her legs on social media, or tweets about 'having a lovely time in the garden with the kids #summer'.

With it being so hot I've had the windows open etc, but the noise is so loud and constant that it's driving me mad, even DD (who is no angel let me assure you!) has said it is annoying. I don't know how the mum stays sane, but she doesn't seem to have a problem with it, or do anything to try and prevent it. I've thought about inviting them round here, incase they are all bored etc but to be honest last time I did that the lounge was trashed, they got into my bedroom and emptied drawers out, flushed a whole loo roll down the loo and broke one of DD's toys. While the mum had a coffee and did the whole 'don't do that..... Oh no he's done it now sorry' and I can't afford to take DD out of th house every day during the hols as much as I would love to!

WIBU to do a rain dance on my lawn? Or hope it snows or something?

If it rains they will be outside, getting wet and loving it as it's so hot. I feel your pain. There isn't a lot you can do other than get a very loud sound system, or a fog horn which you set off every time the youngest screams. With any luck their mum will get the message. It's that or go to the park.

I've got kids outside playing football against my fence. And shrieking. I can bear it for the one hour or so in the evening during term time but it's ALL bleedin' day now. And because they don't have to go to school they are out til 9pm....banging the ball on the fence, shrieking etc. I do my polite 'boys, can you try not to bang the fence' and they apologise sweetly. 10 mins later, it's all on again!!

September cant come soon enough!

We've been taking it in turns here with the kids all out in the gardens in paddling pools screaming in fun and otherwise! But I do think it must be hard to be next door to kids who NEVER go out and give the neighbours a break. My sympathies and hope you do get a bit of a break from it during the hols - are they going away at all?

Lonecatwithkitten · 27/07/2014 18:39

I have a swimming pool large paddling pool being used beneath my bedroom at window from around 6.30am every morning.

I don't mind the general play noise, there are a few families around here playing out so it's never silent, it's just the screaming etc that is unbearable after a while!

We don't have a car and the nearest park which has play equipment is a 20min, £4 bus ride away so it's not an option for every day :(

Screaming kids annoy me too

But it's hot and maybe she's just pig sick of trying to sort them out, so she's resorted to just letting them get on with it?

I don't know what her using social media and taking photos has to do with any of this though.

Neighbour has a rather loud husband who likes to sit in the garden with the stereo blaring out crap every evening and all day at the weekends. I bumped into her this morning and innocently asked if she knew where the very loud music was coming from as it was driving me nuts and I'd have to move. I could hear a pin drop this evening. Wonder how long it will last.

I still think a fog horn is your best bet.

Not much help but if you keep the doors and windows closed ( and ideally the curtains too) during the day it will actually be cooler and might keep some of the noise out. Counter intuitive I know but it works. Just open them all up when the temperature drops at night and get a good through draft going.

Good luck with the noise.
