To invest in an airgun to shoot a pigeon?

So this wood pigeon sits on the house roof and craps...
Its a sloped roof - sloping the other way - said pigeon sits with its bottom hanging over the edge so the crap lands on doorstep -
Massive craps and often splatter... I have pigeon crap splatter over my front door, walls and the side of my shed...
Worse the odd splatter gets on the outside door mat ...and my DCs and friends run in and out - they take their shoes off but I have it walked in on the inside door mat and the laminate floor in the hall...

Went out earlier and cleaned two piles up (was hoping yesterday's rain would wash it away)......sure it is only a matter of time before its gets one of us on the head...
Just been out now and it is sitting there - probably working up to producing another huge pile ...all I can see is its bottom...a perfect target.
Did wondered if DCs supersoaker would reach but I fear not (equivalent to 3 floors high)....
I fear an airgun is the only solution ....AIBU?

get one of these - decorative and practical.

No to guns - peace, love and lentils man.

brave I have got a nice flowery number I could wear whilst taking pot shots...idea is very tempting... but all my neighbours are nice and I don't want to scare them - then again if my neighbour from hell was still here ... Grin
Larry that's sad ...might feel murderous towards the pigeon but would want to make it swift and painless...
KurriDid you read the reviews for the owl - didn't seem to work very well - lots of 3 and 4 star reviews because even though it didn't deter pigeons it looked nice Shock Confused ...in fact none of those decoy things don't seem to work well...Sad
And lots of people complaining about pigeon poo - before my experience I would have been Hmm getting upset about a bit of bird poo -but after experiencing the sheer amount from one 'bowel movement' I completely sympathise...

I will try a water pistol and failing that look into getting some spikes fitted .....

I have a similar poo problem with house martins - three nests of them under the eaves at the front ofthe house - Iam having to hose and scrub the window sills everyday ! - But I do love them, - they make up for pooping by being incredibly cute and poking their heads out of the nest and shouting. But it is amazingthe amount of bodily waste a small creature like abird can produce!

Lally112 · 27/07/2014 13:53

how good a shot are you anyway? I have been shooting since I was 5 and there is very little chance of you hitting that bird. Find someone with a harris hawk or peregrine or something and fly it on a line near your house regularly. Pigeon will learn not to come back with a bird of prey out.

Stratter5 · 27/07/2014 13:58

:( :( :(

Pigeons are lovely, intelligent, affection creatures :(

could you buy a neighbor a bird bath, feeding table or bird house as a gift in hoping that the bastard bird takes home there.

Squeakyheart · 27/07/2014 14:07

Good luck with the water soaker!

Larry shooting collared doves is illegal they are not classed as vermin so if your neighbour is shooting them it might be worth reporting. Also it needs to be about 50foot from a public highway I think so possibly illegal depending on where the house is and garden size etc!

GerundTheBehemoth · 27/07/2014 14:15

All wild birds are protected by law in the UK. There's a tiny number of species (including woodpigeons and collared doves) that you can humanely kill under a general licence (ie you don't have to apply for it) but only if they are seriously damaging crops/other property or are posing a risk to public health, and you are supposed to try non-lethal methods first.

That hawk kite is genius Grin.

juliascurr · 27/07/2014 16:26

isn't it?
the farms round here all have them, so I guess they work

LarrytheCucumber · 27/07/2014 17:01

Sqeakyheart who do you report it to? My next door neighbour took an injured one to an animal sanctuary, but she has reported the same family to the Police so many times for other things that I doubt if they would listen.

BoneyBackJefferson · 27/07/2014 17:40

Its legal but has tight rules.
the two that I remember are

"It is perfectly legal to shoot a legal-limit airgun in your garden, provided NO pellets leave your boundaries.

It is illegal to fire an airgun within 50-feet (15 metres) of the centre of a public highway, if by so doing you cause upset or inconvenience to anyone using that highway."

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 27/07/2014 20:18

The huffer puffer went very high but you have to give it a mighty hoof.
Do you like your neighbours?
I would be tempted to get a catapault and hurl chunks of bread onto the neighbours roof or even at the pooping culprits themself. A week old bloomer up the wizz-wang would give them something to think about.

Isetan · 27/07/2014 21:59

We are plagued by sea gulls, as we live near the coast and our bloddy neighbour feed the f**kers. I have invested in the water gun equivelant of a sniper rifle and boy does it feel good to hit 'em.

LarrytheCucumber · 28/07/2014 13:49

Thanks Boney. The second wouldn't be broken as he is in the back garden, but maybe the first...

DS saw this in London today,

www.pigeoncontrolresourcecentre.org/html/reviews/remove-pigeons-birds-of-prey.html

Shoopshoop2 · 28/07/2014 22:19

With some female bird-handler shouting "Go Lidia",to encourage the hawk to kill Angry

unlucky83 · 29/07/2014 00:55

I known how Betty feels - at least as far as pigeons are concerned...
Shoop I hope your DS wasn't too upset...Sad
I know pigeons in London are a problem - wonder if there is a more humane solution - maybe contraceptive in feed for them instead...

Anyway I think the pigeon knows what was on my mind - no more pigeon crap since - and I saw it sitting on my neighbour's roof today... in the bottom hanging over the edge way ....

Get a paintball gun. It'll make a mess right on it's bum when the pellet hits. Poetic justice. Grin

For real, they hurt. Don't really shoot it at a small live animal
