to think fruit and vegetables are a bit of a con

Me and the hubby have both never been a big fan of fruit and veg. We don't worry about having 5 a day and probably rarely do. We are both healthy late 30s, not overweight and hardly ever get ill.

Now dd is at school we are having her friends round for dinner. One was horrified that we fed her daughter fish fingers, baked beans with diet cola. To be fair we would usually have sweet corn with this meal simply because we like it but we had ran out.

It feels like kids are being punished by feeding them kale and broccoli and nothing nice.

Apparently a glass of orange juice has as much sugar as a Mars bar. If you give your child the orange juice that's not much of a treat and once they become a teenager they will gorge on all the forbidden foods!

I think this whole eat fruit and veg is a conspiracy to make the supermarkets more money and make people miserable.

I have another thread now in food/recipes.

I'll have those roasted but only in tiny quantities raw.

Can I just point out to the 'tomato is actually a fruit' lot that firstly there is no botantical definition for a vegetable, it's just part of a plant that we eat in a savoury way. So 'vegetables' can be leaves (lettuce, spinach, chard, cabbage), flowers (cauliflower, broccoli, artichoke), stalks (asparagus, celery), roots (potatoes, swede, carrots), seeds (peas, beans, nuts) or fruit (tomatoes yes but also squash, courgette, peppers, cucumber, avocados) not to mention fungi. Some 'fruit' we eat are not actually fruit, no-one says 'but rhubarb is actually a stem' but generally most fruit we eat fits the botanical defintion.

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.

Did you know that a strawberry isn't a fruit though? The little tiny pips are the fruit, botanically speaking.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 01/08/2014 21:02

Hard to care, isn't it? Grin

I just bought some yummy looking strawberries. DH is low-ish carbing and isn't allowed any unless he dilutes them with cream. That's his theory anyway.

When I do kale chips they are so bitter. Where am I going wrong? ( sorry to derail somewhat)
