Assuming no major credit card debt etc. This is more of a nosey parker curiosity question, after a discussion with a friend.

I've borrowed 3.5 times twice and I'm comfortable with that. I've been offered up to 6 times salary!

Firstly I'd rather have more than a 10% deposit before getting a mortgage. We had 20% and borrowed 1.5 times salary, even 3 or 4 times salary is usually 6 or 7 years net pay, don't know why anyone wants that level of debt hanging over them.

At the moment we are on a FR for another 2.5 years of nearly 5% :(
Only one we could get 2 years ago to buy this house.
Ironically we didn't borrow as much as we could have!
It's 3 x Dhs salary.
It means that we are already paying 5% rates.
So when rates go up we are hoping it won't be such a shock for us.
Who knows?

Baddderz · 27/07/2014 09:40

..oh, and we couldn't borrow NOW what we did 2.5 years ago!

3x

No more

In our case Magashira, it's so we don't have 4 people and a business crammed into a 2 bed flat.

Average house price is currently £172k. With the average wage at £26.5k. From that, an average couple with a 10% deposit would be on a multiple of just under 3x for the average house.

Just borrowed approx 4x single salary - DH not included as he's self employed. But the payments are only about 20% of my net monthly take home. It depends hugely on the rate you get.
