Deodorant on 5 year old DD

More of a WWYD really... A few times recently in the hot weather I have noticed that my 5yo DD's armpits smell of BO. As a result we have upped the washing regime as she used to have a bath every other day. I have always been firmly in the 'kids just get grubby not smelly and don't need as much bathing until puberty camp', but this morning she had a shower and an hour later I bent to give her a cuddle and could smell her.
I am going to take her to the docs to make sure there is no underlying medical reason for the pong but I am really sad that this may be an issue for her from such a young age.
If you were in my shoes would you just stick to bathing or would you use a product so you could be sure she wouldn't get smelly? I am worried about kids at school noticing and being cruel. Has anyone else had to deal with this?

Try a bit of alcohol gel after she's dried herself. DD2(11) uses it instead of deodorant whenever possible and it works quite well. It kills off the bacteria that make the smell.

I don't have any wisdom OP, but agree with others about not using deodorant on one so young.
Our doctor told us not to allow our ds's to use anti perspirant when they hit puberty.
There is a history of skin disorder in our family, but he suggested that even so skin/ sweat glands should be allowed to sweat and just to wash more.

Thank you for this thread - my DC has a similar problem but didn't know it could be an allergy or deficiency. I do now, and will be heading to the doctor!

Dr. Google tells me it can be Vit D deficiency? Also yes, the dairy thing. Hmm.

My now six year old need to wear deodorant daily, she's been seen by a paediactric endocrinologist and had various (non-invasive) tests to determine why she gets BO at such a young age.

Her hormone levels are slightly higher than would be expected but the consultant is not concerned. (Despite her now developing pubic hair). He recommended Bionsen deodorant which is aluminium free, it solved the problem overnight and seems gentle enough on her sensitive skin.

It is probably worth a trip to the doctor though as there can be many reasons for these symptoms, from premature puberty (very common these days) to a sensitivity to hormones in meat/dairy products. Changing to organic milk and meat helped but did not totally stop DD's symptoms.

I hope this has helped a bit.

Thanks everyone. The milk thing might be a factor as she does have a lot of dairy. She likes to have a large beaker of milk in the morning and evening (organic) and eats quite a bit of cheese.

Interesting about vitamin D too as I have never supplemented but read the epic thread about it and now think maybe I should have been.

try a body spray rather than an antiperspirant first?
