Or similar unsecured footwear?

That is all. :)

Why?

Namechangearoonie123 · 25/07/2014 16:06

Fairly sure stilletoes pose more of a risk than flat footwear

londonrach · 25/07/2014 16:08

Because the flip flop can slip and the flip flop gets caught under the pedal. Known risk.

thisvelvetglove · 25/07/2014 16:09

Oops maybe OP was too short.

I have it in my head that they're too loose and might slip off, get caught up etc.

I don't drive in stilettos either mind you.

Me? Or you. Because if you don't think you're safe driving in flip flops then YANBU.

Yabu to dictate other peoples footwear though. I'm fine driving in flip flops in my automatic, I much prefer to drive in bare feet though.

thisvelvetglove · 25/07/2014 16:10

Phew LondonRach. Was worried it was just me. [Blush]

VioletHare · 25/07/2014 16:13

I've driven i

thisvelvetglove · 25/07/2014 16:13

Not an inability, an inherent danger of the flip flop falling off and being caught in the pedals.

OP posts:
flipchart · 25/07/2014 16:13

I've driven in flip flops in summer for 30 years. Never felt unsafe.

Suefla62 · 25/07/2014 16:14

Just take them off!

thisvelvetglove · 25/07/2014 16:14

I'm sure i could drive in them, but I'd not choose to.

OP posts:
VioletHare · 25/07/2014 16:14

I've driven in flip flops for years and never had a problem. It's pretty much all I wear from April - September.

LastTango · 25/07/2014 16:16

Just take them off!

Now there's ^^ an accident waiting to happen Shock

BabyMarmoset · 25/07/2014 16:17

I drive fine in flip flops...

Never could drive in bare feet though - my feet slip off the pedals and then get caught underneath. True fact

SistersOfPercy · 25/07/2014 16:18

Any shoes can be dangerous. Depends on the car and footwear combination.

I wear converse a lot. Some years ago i drove a Morris Minor. The first day I wore my cons I discovered the accelerator pedal and cons combo was lethal. It created something so slippy that my foot shot forward of the pedal and became jammed behind it. I had to brake with my left foot, stall the car to a stop and pull over pretty quickly. Took off shoes, drove home barefoot. That was the only car I've had problems with in those shoes.

If you feel comfortable and confident of your abilities then it doesn't really make any difference IMHO.

LittleFriendSusan · 25/07/2014 16:20

YANBU. I drive in my Birkenstocks but not rubber type flipflops. DP drive into the back of the car in front a few years back when his sports sandal slipped and got caught in the pedal when he braked, so I'm a first-hand witness to the perils of driving in summer footwear! He almost did the same again recently but just got it together in time. (You'd think he'd learn...)

Sandthorn · 25/07/2014 16:21

Well, you ain't going to get arrested for it, but DSA advice says don't do it. www.rac.co.uk/community/blog/rac-blog/december-2012/driving-without-shoes-is-it-illegal

moggle · 25/07/2014 16:22

I agree I don't feel as secure in them as normal shoes - used to keep a pair of ballet flats in the car during the summer to drive in, but tbh find them just as bad - if they slip off the back of the foot. Now I keep my old smelly toms to drive in, do occasionally drive in my flipflops but only a short sub 30mph trip.
Bare feet I find even worse and the one time I had to out of desperation I got horrendous cramp and had to pull over...
Anyway I wouldn't tell others what to do but if I had a DD learning to drive I'd tell/ask her not to wear flipflops...

TurboWithAKick · 25/07/2014 16:22

yes op....your own inability....not mine,i drive fine in them, and they don't get stuck!! mine are big enough not to,thanks!!

TurboWithAKick · 25/07/2014 16:24

my steel toecapped work boots would be more 'dangerous' as you cant feel much and they are clumpy

RiverTam · 25/07/2014 16:24

I find my birkenstocks get caught sometimes, I think flip flops would be worse.

When I was in Australia and wearing flip flops most of the time I drove in bare feet, which is what a lot of people seemed to do.

lanbro · 25/07/2014 16:24

I thought it was illegal to drive barefoot?

redrubyindigo · 25/07/2014 16:25

A friend of mine used to drive barefoot all the time in the 1970's. She found out the hard way when she had a small prang and jumped out to inspect the damage and cut her feet on the broken glass from the headlights.

PresidentSpreadable · 25/07/2014 16:27

Erm, YABU. I've been driving for 22 years, and at least 5 months of each year in flip flops. Never had an accident due to flip flop wearing.

I am a brilliant driver though.
