Neighbour's alarm going off all night... AIBU?

For two nights in a row, a nearby house's alarm has been going ALL night. I can see it from the bedroom window, it's a house a few streets away and is flashing red and giving off a noise like a fire engine. Very hard to sleep but too hot to shut the windows!

I don't know where the actual house is so not sure what can be done? I'm guessing the family are away!

Anything I can do?

report to 101 or council

britnay · 25/07/2014 08:25

the alarm company should have a sign on the outside of the house, why not phone them?

If it is annoying you it will be same for those living closer. Maybe take a walk around where you think it might be and speak to neighbours to see if already reported?

Perfectlypurple · 25/07/2014 08:43

Its not a matter for 101. Ringthe council and speak to environmental health.

LIZS · 25/07/2014 08:45

but surely it might have gone off due to an attempted break in ?

I was under the impression that alarms are not allowed to ring for more than 20 mins now (industry standard) before they stop automatically - but the light will continue to flash - so it must be an old alarm system.

Having said that, our next door neighbour's alarm rings whenever there is a power failure as he has never had the bloody thing serviced so the back up battery is knackered and the alarm assumes someone has tampered with the power supply (even if the alarm sysytem wasn't set in the first place) I think the tenant put a sledge hammer through it last time the power went off for 6 hrs.

Not a lot you can do about it if the owners are away - if someone was looking after the house they would have turned it off by now.

Putting ear plugs in could be your only option.

We used to have this in our old house - it was a nightmare and definitely went off for longer than 20 minutes. We moved in the end (not because of that though!)

I'd ring 101 and ask for advice.

I had it happen once with a neighbour who had gone away on holidays. Night three I rang the police who came out, checked the house wasn't being broken in to, and switched off power to the house so the alarm didn't work. They told me it happens quite a lot. Neighbour wasn't happy as it meant their Foxtel (Aussie version of pay television) box was switched off and didn't tape her favorite shows while she was away, poor diddums. I'd ring your local police and see if they have advice.

Surely would also invalidate insurance if there was a break-in?

i just got back from holiday to a letter from the council saying my alarm had gone off for a long period. Spoke to neighbour and it had gone off at 10 at night and was still going 9.30 in the morning. Another neighbour ended up climbing a ladder and cutting the wire.

Our alarm has not been turned on for years as it had been playing up so we dont use it at all. No idea what set it off but we felt really awful about it when we found out. One of the reasons we had not used it was it had been going off during the day while we were out and not recording that it was going off and we were getting some notes through the door, but that was at least 4 or 5 years ago and we havent turned it on since.

After three nights of it going off then I didn't give a rats about their insurance tbh. If you're going to have an alarm but not pay for a monitoring company to deal with it going off, then that's the chances you take.
