to not want wee on the carpet

my 75 years old minlaw takes a bucket up to the loft room when she stays as she is nervous about steep stairs in the middle of the night. i would obv prefer if she didn't but do get it. I give her a towel to put it on to catch any splashes so that i can wash it after.
H finds my distaste of her doing this and the towel 'hilarious' (in a passive aggressive way) and thinks no-one else would have a problem with it and/or bother with a towel.
so aibu or is he?

Dear god, you would rather she had to piss in a bucket than go to the 'effort' of changing your sheets and giving her the room downstairs?

YABVU!!!!!

Your poor mil. Her dil makes her go in a bucket rather than change the sheets. I can see this as mail headlines with sad face. A form of abuse (almost). Op I think the solution to the wee situation as others have mentioned is a change of bedroom closer to the bathroom so your mil keeps her dignity . Hope you can sort that so everyone is happy and this problem disappears. X

There's something called a Kamper Karzi which costs around £15 and will be your faithful friend in this situation. Every household should have one!

Pyjamaramadrama · 25/07/2014 08:38

Definitely swap rooms when she stays every time. Even if it is hassle she definitely shouldn't have to wee in a bucket.

I know you've already acknowledged this but another vote here for swapping rooms.

I don't understand the comments about it being bad to provide a bucket rather than change sheets. How is it better to provide nothing so she has to piss herself in bed because she's too scared to go down the stairs? That's not dignified.

Obviously it would be best if she could sleep on the same floor as a toilet. If it's really not possible then the proper camping bucket toilets are great. We have one similar to this

We put an old microfibre towel under ours, it's commonly sense. I'm obviously used to pissing I'm buckets Grin

I think your husbands attitude making fun of you stinks. Why is he not getting on with it discretely himself.

My nan has always wee'd in a bucket in her bedroom. She lives in a bungalow now and can get about fine and dandy but she still does.

LittleBearPad · 25/07/2014 08:58

Scrumbled if the OP or her husband changed the sheets when MIL came to stay then MiL would be sleeping on the same floor as the loo and there'd be no need for a bucket as MIL could use the bathroom easily. It's the stairs at night that mean she's been using a bucket.

Scrumbled · 25/07/2014 09:06

Ahh I see, that's makes more sense. It's a bit early for me Grin

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 25/07/2014 09:41

How many nights does she stay though? If it's weekly or more I wouldn't be keen to give up my room every time, MIL or no. I think the commode or camping toilet idea is the right one.

Smoolett · 25/07/2014 11:30

Good god you let someone wee in a bucket in your home. Poor lady. My house is hardly palatial but if my elderly nanna came to stay I would give her my bedroom for the night! Yabvvu

WendyBloomers · 25/07/2014 14:15

You sound a lovely lady..

FlossyMoo · 25/07/2014 14:20

I am very pleased you are re-thinking the sleeping arrangements OP.

I still can't help being disgusted that you and your DH have let this arrangement continue just because you didn't want to change the sheets Shock

Hurr1cane · 25/07/2014 17:49

Sorry I didn't mean to offend anyone by suggesting a camping toilet, I just thought it might be an option if trading bedrooms wasn't. And maybe OP could get one in case of any emergency stays etc where there's no time for changing sheets etc.
