There must be a few parenting fourm rooms, so why does the media for ever attack MN.

OP posts:
LumpySpacedPrincess · 24/07/2014 22:26

The thread didn't say that at all. They have isolated one comment and attributed it to the whole site. The flavour of the thread was very different.

It's almost as if the media want to represent women as being bitchy and judgemental.

It's almost as if we exist in a patriarchal society that belittles and demeans women's opinions.

Just a thought.

WorraLiberty · 24/07/2014 22:31

I missed the thread but having read the quotes in that link, I don't disagree with them.

It's absolutely tragic that a young lady has died but no-one can really deny there was a huge gap between the baby wearing attachment parent she portrayed herself as, and the drug addict that she sadly was.

What the readers of that paper might be missing is, it's perfectly possible that the most nasty, inflammatory posts could well have been made by that journalist just to stir the shit.

So the whole article is a load of bollocks imo.

WorraLiberty · 24/07/2014 22:32

They have isolated one comment and attributed it to the whole site

That's what I mean

Who's to say the comment wasn't made by the journalist themself?

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 22:38

Mn doesn't get attacked.mn actively courts publicity, justine married to ian katz, bbc and ex-guardian
Years ago mn struck a deal with DM and it went a bit tits up.but clearly not publicity shy
The debacle were gina ford was threatening to sue over derogatory posts
The web chats invite and obtain real heavy hitters.ms clinton was huge coup
All these things make mn noteworthy.and posters do write some salacious dribble that makes good copy

Hecate
"I wonder why they twist things (...)
Could it be because they have a problem with an intelligent, articulate and vocal group of (mostly) women? I know quite a few think that is the case."

The article was written by a woman, so I don't think that is it, I think the truth is 'Group of predominantly woman are mainly sympathetic towards troubled Peaches' doesn't sell papers.
These people will take a story, twist whatever interpretation serves them and will get a name for themselves.

SweetSummerSweetPea · 24/07/2014 22:56

None of the quotes in that article were from the DM journalist, who has always been open and honest about her job and didn't deserve the snarkiness she got on that thread
really? who is she?i never knew a bonafide DM journo was on here.

Its a ridiculous article!

I agree with poster who said kills two birds with one stone, and attacks peaches by mums forum...PERFECT.

SweetSummerSweetPea · 24/07/2014 22:57

YY

WorraLiberty · 24/07/2014 22:58

What DM journalist?

The link is to the Independent and the journalist clearly posted on the thread, otherwise they wouldn't have seen the deletion message.

MrsWinnibago · 24/07/2014 22:58

Is it back?? The thread I mean? or is this a different one?

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 22:59

Oh get a grip, some mn posts about celebrities are vile.the peaches thread was
Mn like any diverse group has posts that are worthy/funny/clever/puerile/offensive
If posters didn't write the shite they write about gina ford, peaches et al it wouldn't be contentious or replicated elsewhere

2rebecca · 24/07/2014 23:00

I only read about her interest in baby attachment parenting after she had died. I'm quite glad that when I was a parent of babies in the 90s there weren't as many parenting fads like attachment and baby led weaning. There was your local maty group or NCT and that was it. Celebs seem to be more atttracted to extreme views on things like parenting though. Maybe it's the crowd they mix with that you have to follow a trend on parenting and turn it almost into a religion, and can't just muddle through doing what seems best at the time, learning as you go.

DownByTheRiverside · 24/07/2014 23:01

MN and journalists always brings this image to mind for me
www.likecool.com/Gear/Pic/Dolphins%20and%20sharks%20prey%20on%20a%20school%20of%20mackerel%20off%20the/Dolphins-and-sharks-prey-on-a-school-of-mackerel-off-the-2.jpg

Easy pickings, free quotes and a reasonably high media profile already.

Mn is a media savvy company, skilled at managing its brand.great at getting notables to webchat
Lets not make out its amateurish op run in the commune.its a for profit business
I dont think its necessarily bad,the publicity around david cameron and the mum seeking respite was huge fir mn and mn profile

ExcuseTypos · 24/07/2014 23:07

The press don't let the actual facts get in the way of a story. That would be very boring. So they twist and exaggerate and leave huge chunks out.

I think some of you are naive or purposefully miss point.mn is public forum
Read the mnhq guidance non-exclusive copyright in all submissions to Mumsnet Talk
Mn gathered quotes/recipes from threads, and put them into sold for profit book.

If you dont want posts reproduced elsewhere then you'll not find it on mn
Its public site,it generates interest . Penis beaker anyone

FidelineAndBombazine · 24/07/2014 23:43

This post, quoted in the article is not from the deleted thread at all but from a thread still live on the site;

Wed 23-Jul-14 11:17:53

I imagine most of what Peaches said was absolute bollocks re. the way she looked after her kids. I'm sure she loved them but all the baby wearing, co sleeping, attachment stuff was probably nonsense - an invention to give her a second career.

And, if IIRC, it was posted by a MNer who admits to working for the DM, so, if I am not mistaken, the plot is thicker than tap water.

(I believe the whole DM employee/ journo thing was discussed on thread- can t reread all now- so pretty sure I'm not speaking out of turn - do report me if my heat addled brain has dropped a clanger)

FidelineAndBombazine · 24/07/2014 23:45

Oh blimey that's some kind of X post record, even for me Grin

Note to self - referesh the page sometimes.

Vintagejazz · 24/07/2014 23:48

I always sense that the 'annoyance' at Mumsnet being quoted in newspapers, is often a cover for a certain preening and delight at being chosen for this 'accolade'. Not talking about the OP, who seems to be genuine in her irritation, but so often you read these 'God, we're in the papers agaiin' posts that just sound a bit insincere in their disapproval and you know posters are eagerly scrutinising the article to see if they've been quoted.

scottishmummy · 24/07/2014 23:53

Like when mn book came out, folk clamouring to see if they'd been quoted
Posting their quotes and gushing.no objection about media intrusion
Some on mn like quotes and notoriety but only on own terms though

FidelineAndBombazine · 25/07/2014 00:30

I think you have a point there vintage and scottish

It is chilling how something specific, even identifying could be lifted straight onto the pages of a national paper. Makes me think twice about posting re DV, for example Sad

Cuteypatootey · 25/07/2014 02:10

I saw one morning I had been quoted in an article in the daily mail. Blush Yes, I look at the pictures.
