To still not remember what my bloody thyroid levels should be

Been hypothyroid for ten years, diagnosed after ds. Pregnant fine with dd. now, after many years, pregnant again. Doc exception it's just phoned with appointment for Monday re my TSH and T4, asking me to come in to up dose of levythyroxine (currently 125mcg). But she said my levels are TSH 1.9 and T4 14, which I thought was good. Tbf I am exhausted and napping every chance I get, but figured that was because I am older. Scared of mmc now as I know thyroid can contribute, but would be v grateful to know what my levels should be as can easily pop a few more pills. Thanks in advance, sorry not AIBU (except that IABU not to pay more attention to my own health needs) but didn't know where to post was can't see a health board, and figure more people read this than antenatal.

I too have had an underactive thyroid for years (which seems to no longer be responding to thyroxine but that's a different thread!). My doc just tells me if the levels are too low or too high - are you meant to know the numbers? I never have.

I agree your levels sound fine, but I think pregnancy can need higher levels of medication. I was very under while I was pregnant (TSH was nearly 9) but for some stupid reason my GP didn't put me on thyroxine. i didn't know what the levels meant at the time, so it is only now that I feel annoyed! Anyway be reassured that my pregnancy was fine, although I was very tired. I think there are guidelines now for pregnant women, so your GP will treat you in line with that I imagine.

I think T4 of 14 is at the lower end of normal? If you are napping during the day and feeling generally shitty then a small increase might help.

YANBU anyway. It is the doctor's job to know what the numbers mean isn't it?!

TSH should be as close to 1 as possible in pregnancy. 1.9 is good but not absolutely optimum. If you are on a dose of, say, 75, you could take 75 one day and 100 the next to get your level closer to 1.0. However, check with your endocrinologist and keep getting tested as you don't want to go below 1 as it can increase the risk of miscarriage.

RedRoom · 24/07/2014 12:42

Ps I was on 50 usually, 75 when ttc to get myself close to 1.0, and then advised to immediately go up to 100 when I found out I was pregnant. The recommendation is in increase of about 1/3 of your dose.

Igggi · 24/07/2014 12:46

Every time I've been pg I've had my dose increased by about 25 to start with. Then regular monitoring throughout pg, then drop down again about a month after delivery.
Your levels sound ok but if the doctor knows they will reduce/increase as the pg progresses, then sensible to take action now.

Igggi · 24/07/2014 12:48

Chrome100 - a lot of people want to know the levels die to the range of results - so you might feel fine with T4 at 14, but I need it to be over 18 to feel good. If a GP told me the results were fine, I'd want to know the numbers too IF I wasn't feeling too good.

Due, not die Blush

A TSH of under 2 is fine during pregnancy, according to my endocrinologist.

Re levels otherwise, I only feel good if my TSH is 1, and the only thing that gets me there is dessicated thyroid, not T4-only medication.

Thanks so much for advice all. Reassuring and helpful. I will take an extra 25mcg alternate days through til the appointment then, and see what he says. Ugh, am paranoid enough about mmc without this, have just booked an early scan for tomorrow (approx 9/10 weeks and NHS scan not til 20/8/14). Silly of me really, but want to tell a few close friends and cant bear to until i know it is all real. Thanks again.
