To expect john Lewis to refund me

About four weeks ago, I bought new oak bedroom furniture from john Lewis; dressing table, stool, chest of drawers and bedside tables. I'd searched everywhere for something to match new fitted wardrobes but also to fit into a tight space.

Furniture arrived as ordered but a few days later I noticed what looked like two patches of wood filler on the oak front of the chest of drawers. One of these subsequently peeled off and left a chunk of wood missing from the front of the unit.

Then the handles worked loose and one of them fell off. It can be screwed back on but falls off again right away if you try to open the drawer.

I telephoned john Lewis and it seems they can't replace the chest because the line is discontinued and there are none left over. They offered to refund the chest and remove it, but it's absolutely no use refunding that and leaving me with the matching units.

They are sending a technician to look at the broken handles. I guess if they can be fixed then I would be happier to keep the chest because I searched for months to find something that matched.

However, I'm still left with an ugly mark on the unit where the wood peeled off. This chest is only a month old. Should I ask them to refund it? If it was in stock, they would be replacing it. If they remove it, they can't resell it.

What shall I say to them?

Ask for a discount on it retrospectively?

You'd be amazed what the technician can do. My dh is one,not for JL but has done work for them. Agree to a repair, you may be pleasantly surprised.

I think they should do the repair but also give you a generous discount.

speechiesusie · 23/07/2014 14:35

Do you reckon they could repair the wood though?

Yes probably. Nothing lost by allowing it as a starting point.

I am not sure I understand the question: they offered to refund it and you felt there was no point in that, so I assume you said "no". You are now asking whether you should ask for a refund? Do you mean you want the refund and keep the damaged/blemished unit on the grounds that they wouldn't be able to sell it?

Sorry if I am being a bit thick but I am somewhat confused by the question...
