I bought my DS a pair of shoes yesterday, they turned out to be too narrow, so returned to the shop today to be told – no refunds and you can only choose a replacement from sale items – by a very smug sales assistant who knew very well that as they were in the final markdown there was hardly anything left to choose from.
So I went around a few times and eventually chose a ridiculously expensive pair of plimsolls, turns out the difference is £3.50 – so I could choose something else for that value – except obviously they don’t stock anything that cheap.
So I chose a t-shirt that and had to pay the difference of £9.80! In hindsight I wish I had told them to stick that £3.50 but I realised that when I already had typed my pin and with them not doing refunds I didn’t think it would go well if I changed my mind…..
And the fucking smugness that went along with it pissed me off the most, I couldn’t help myself so said “ I need to remind myself not to shop here again”
not that I could afford anyway at their regular prices
But I guess it’s not a big loss on their part…

Rant over, feel better now, and ready to be told that IABU.

The smug attaitude would annoy me, but other than that I think they're being fair enough - if it's clear from the receipt that they can't give refunds on sale items then there wasn't much he could really do.

You didn't have to buy the t-shirt (although I know you realise this now) so you can't really blame him for that one.

Also, just a thought: was he really smug or was it just a 'good customer service attitude' gone wrong? I only say because a colleague of mine used to look like he was smirking at customers and making fun of them, when really he was just trying to be friendly Confused

I'll probably get flamed for this, but you shouldn't buy shows for a child without them being there. Even if you don't 'do' Clarkes et al, it's still a silly thing to do.

Shoes, not shows.

Why was the sales assistant ' smug'?

jammygem · 23/07/2014 14:00

Yeah, I think Onesleep has a point. I know it's not always possible, but next time try to bring your DS along- it'll save a lot of hassle!

It sounds like you made an attempt to buy a cheap pair of shoes which didn't work out, and whilst I see that is frustrating I don't think it's the shop's fault. Just because the sales assistant knew that the shoes were marked down and that there were limited options to choose from as a replacement but doesn't mean that they took any pleasure in the fact that it was going to be difficult to find something to exchange them with.

If they really were smug, then I can see how you might have been annoyed, but if they just told you their policy without being particularly apologetic, then I would just chalk it up to an annoying situation and put it behind me.
