to have misplaced the new cat

Hmm.

So long story short, went to visit someone on Saturday and came home with an unwanted (to them) cat. We already have a cat so it's being s process of trying to get them used to each other. For the most part, cat #1 is in a huff and staying out of the way, growling when cat #2 gets in her path.

Cat #2 hasn't settled brilliantly; isn't eating much or using the little tray. She's had periods of being extremely friendly and settled - came onto my bed for a bit last night, sat on my knee being brushed this afternoon, but is generally hiding out somewhere.

She's not in her usual hiding places - behind the sofa, or behind the washing machine. Have looked in the usual places; under beds, behind furniture etc, but she's nowhere to be found...

Kickplate in kitchen, look behind

DustyCropHopper · 21/07/2014 22:15

Any open windows she could escape through? Also, when I was looking after my brother's cats they had disappeared, found them Ina kitchen cupboard with the door shut. They managed to open the door and get it. They also turned up once at the back of the kitchen drawer unit.

fluffyraggies · 21/07/2014 22:17

Wardrobe? One of mine spent a whole afternoon shut in one of ours while we searched the whole bloody rest of the house.

Airing cupboard?

Amy106 · 21/07/2014 22:18

It is still earlier days for both of them. They will probably just need more time to get to know each other and adjust to living together. The new cat will come out from their hiding spot when they get hungry. There's no chance he/she got outside, is there? Hope it all works out for you.

minmooch · 21/07/2014 22:19

It's only been 2 days, of course she hasn't settled in yet. Have you sprayed deli way around the house to help settle both cats? Have you given her her own litter tray? Cats don't like change so both cats will take time to get used to things.

Check your cupboards - my girl cat like to sleep in wardrobes so now we can't shut any of the wardrobe doors! Under a bed? In a dark corner?

minmooch · 21/07/2014 22:19

Deli way = feliway

EleanorAbernathy · 21/07/2014 22:21

My old cat disappears every time we've moved house - most recently she was found in the chimney!
Previous places include:
The small gap behind the kitchen cupboards
Down the side of the washing machine
Inside the bathroom wall (through the hole where the toilet waste pipe went)

PhaedraIsMyName · 21/07/2014 22:24

Cat 1 is very unlikely to have left home even if she has access to outdoors. I'm sure she will turn up and it will settle down.

Lovelydiscusfish · 21/07/2014 22:26

We've had:
In the bed (ie in the structure underneath, not just under the covers)
Under the kitchen units, through an immensely small gap.
My brother's cat made a hole in the back of his sofa and hid in there. It still uses it now, I believe!
Good luck - it will all be fine in time, I'm sure.

Kickplate in kitchen, look behind

Yes I've found a disgruntled cat there. Back of boxroom too. Any gaps between /behind furniture.

PhaedraIsMyName · 21/07/2014 22:28

Oh sorry it's the new cat you've mislaid. Can she get access outdoors?

kinkyfuckery · 21/07/2014 22:33

Have checked all mentioned places.

It is possible that she's gotten out as I've been in and out a few times, but always closed room doors behind me and kept an eye out just in case so it's not really likely, if that makes any sense?

when you catch her confine her to one room with her own litter tray for a few days - then let her gradually explore the house without the other cat present

cats can't just be put together to get on with it - they get stressed very easily

they don't like sharing beds, litter trays, food bowls or space with other cats

don't let the new cat out for a month - and if not already, get her spayed before she goes out

Feliway is good stuff as well - ask your vet

stealthsquiggle · 21/07/2014 22:37

We repeatedly "lost" both our cats when we first had them (adopted from rescue centre aged about 9 months) - in one small room with no open doors or windows Sad. If a cat is determined to hide you won't find them. IIWY I would leave all internal doors open and go to bed - she will probably come out when the house goes quiet.

mumeeee · 21/07/2014 22:41

Our new cat managed to under the kitchen sink, She had somehow got the plinth underneatth one off the units off crawled under there and round to the sink.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/07/2014 22:44

Our cat "disappeared" and DH looked up at my NDN house to see her peering out of the bedroom window.
She used to invite NDN cat in (we had a catdoor)
She went next door but they had closed the back door when they went out.....and she was asleep on their bed, little git Grin
