To think I can never use the washing line again...

Last night I hung some washing out on the communal washing line. We have a flat in a block of four, behind the flats is the communal drying area and the car park. Over the road from the front of the flats is another, older block of flats. There's nothing behind the car park, so no reason for anyone but residents to be in there.

Coming back from town today, we pulled into the car park to find a woman from the flats across the road, walking towards the washing line with a plastic bag in her hand. As we pulled up she saw us and left quickly, going back across the road to her flat, glaring at us.

AIBU to think she was trying to steal my washing? And I can never ever ever use the washing line again?

Has anything gone missing off the line before?

SquinkiesRule · 21/07/2014 14:42

Thats what she made it look like. Has anyone had washing taken from the lines?

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 21/07/2014 14:43

I don't know, yesterday was the first time I ever dared to use the line! We have a tumble dryer but trying to save money on the electricity. I'd ask next door but they've gone away (and that's another story in itself Hmm )

Did you not say anything to her? I would have asked if she thought it was about to rain or something!

Flissity83 · 21/07/2014 14:44

I wonder if she needed it, didn't know how long you would be out so decided to fold yours up for you and use it. But got embarrassed when you arrived...

LiberalLibertines · 21/07/2014 14:46

Is she supposed to use it?

Maybe hers was full, so she was looking to see if yours was free?

Carrier bag unrelated?

(Straw clutching abounds)

Catsmamma · 21/07/2014 14:46

ooooh have you used the line and left washing out on a sunday ....the wee free will be after you!

AND I bet it is not your day for the line!

MrsWinnibago · 21/07/2014 14:46

I also live in a block of four flats and our drying area is secure and nobody can access it. You need to ask your landlord to do this!

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 21/07/2014 14:51

The flats over the road are a different development, different landlords etc (there's four blocks of four flats in our development and each block has a set of four washing lines, one for each flat) The other three were completely empty, I was the only one with any washing out, so she wasn't going to use my line.

The flats she's in are completely separate, ours is a new build so it isn't even like she used to use the washing lines before she moved in.

Haha catsmamma it's the first time I've dared to use the line, I was so scared of infringing on someone else's 'spot'. It's only because next door and one of the downstairs flats are away that I felt brave enough Grin

We have to walk through our drying area to get to the car park so it would be a faff to make it secure (it's hard to describe it).

When if my neighbours get back, I may ask them if anything's been stolen from the line before. For now I think I'll have to use the dryer :(

I'll send you my airer, it collapse when you touch it trapping your fingers. It would be like a mouse trap for potential washing thieves.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 21/07/2014 15:42

That sounds incredible notso

We have guard bees in the raised flowerbeds between the washing lines and the car park... hopefully they would have guarded the washing for me Grin

Incredible but painful Moomin Grin

My Dad threatened to rig up an electric washing line when my sister had her washing stolen!
