To think that if the council are going to start a new initiative then they should make sure they can cater for everyone first!

Bit of a rant really, but it's really bugging me today!

I live in the rother district and the council have recently moved over to the brown bin recycling plan. Now in principal I am all for this - a bigger bin for general recycling and a separate bin for garden waste. However what has wound me up is that they seem to have only got enough brown bins for like a 1/4 of the Sussex
area with the rest having to wait until NOVEMBER! which means that everyone else has to drag all their garden stuff to the tip. I have just moved house and have a massive hedge that needs cutting down every couple of weeks and with a 7 month old it's more than a bit frustrating to have to take time out of my weekends to go to the tip... It's what I pay my council tax for!
But was has annoyed me even more today is that I have just received an email telling me that in order to get my bin I have to pay for it next month! So I'll be paying for a service that I am not getting for another 4 months!

All I can say is grrrrrr

YANBU!

I used to live in Rother :)

vrtra · 20/07/2014 16:28

Yanbu, Rother are shite. :) they still haven't got seagull proof bags like the rest of the civilised world!

vrtra · 20/07/2014 16:30

I think the problem is actually caused by the fact that all the local councils have merged rubbish/ recycling services to save money and therefore the problem is probably countywide. Leaving out the actual pain in the arse that is getting to pebsham tip on a weekend...

ICanSeeTheSun · 20/07/2014 16:36

DH and I went to the tip a few weeks back, it was all recyclable waste and was told you would need ID to prove you lived within the catchment area.

Why make it difficult to recycle

No vrtra this borough (in London) has brown bins for all.

seasidesally · 20/07/2014 17:12

in my area you have to apply for a green bin for garden waste

it has been a godsend to me as i dont drive

it runs 9months a year twice monthly

they are now talking of introducing a £30 fee,i would still gladly pay as it's a great service

sorry not much help op,hope they sought this for you it does seem unfair that their only ready for a 1/4

much better is to opt in system i would of thought as not everybody will use the bins, unlike normal household refuse

Jelliebabe2 · 20/07/2014 17:19

Blimey you have to BUY your bins! That's tight! Ours just arrived as of by magic, we have food, general, recycling, garden and paper! Brilliant Service

BadFam1 · 20/07/2014 17:25

Hi seaside

They have made this an opt in service which is fine, and we have opted in, but they are saying they won't get a bin to us until November and until then they will refuse to take green waste and we have to go to the tip to get rid of it.

I appreciate what they are trying to do just think that if they were going to roll it out they should have made sure they could cater for the community rather than stopping a service for 3/4 of the county and telling them
Basically 'tough' you have to wait until November.

The sensible thing to do would have been to send the letters to each household asking them to opt in and giving say a 2 month timeline to order your bin before rolling out the system, where as what actually happened is we got a Letter around the middle of June telling us from end of June they were changing. I ordered my bin straight away but yet won't get it until November - so clearly they heavily underestimated how many bins would be needed.

Bad service I feel and terrible that despite paying my council tax I am now also going to have to spend my spare time and money on petrol (and cleaning my car of greenery!) to go to the tip

not much good giving you the bins in November,we usually have a big tidy of the garden in October as are service normally finishes end of October

i would not be happy also

why do councils always cock something up

though once its up and running you will love it,makes it so much easier

vrtra · 20/07/2014 20:37

I am talking about East Sussex Andrew, hence "countywide", no need to be patronising. Until recently all the borough / district councils in east Sussex had their own contracts, they are now in the process of merging. This is what my local council told me last year when I asked about my own bin "issues".

As an aside I thought you already had to have a separate paid for bin for garden waste in Rother, I guess the free one is a new initiative and that's why there aren't enough until it starts in Nov?

vrtra · 20/07/2014 20:38

Err free collection even.

MrsWombat · 20/07/2014 20:58

If it's just garden waste, why can't they collect the hedge trimmings etc in those paper garden waste bags for the time being? I know it's not the point, but a good compromise for the moment until the bins can be delivered.

My London council sells them for 50p each from the libraries for people who fill up the compost/garden waste and need extra.

Our bins also arrive by magic......

todayiamfat · 20/07/2014 21:02

Well our council have scrapped garden waste collection and we have never had bins provided (non-wheelie area). I think you're bloody lucky if I'm honest Envy.

In fact, our council is a bit shit. It's only redeeming feature is that it pays my wages Grin!
