to think shops and cafes should give free sugery drinks to diabetic people in emergency situations?

ikeaismylocal · 19/07/2014 12:47

I saw a mum with 3 children having what looked like the beginnings of a fit at a shopping centrer today, everyone else was walking past ignoring her ( whole other thread) I stopped and tried to talk to her but she was very confused and kept trying to tell me her mobile number. I ran into a shop and asked them to call an ambulance ( I had no phone or money, dp had all my things in ds's pushchair and I was meeting him at the car, I'd stopped to go to the toilet)

Her children were about 6 months, 2 and 5, the poor 5 year old was terrified and wouldn't say anything but I chatted to her and told her everything would be ok and after a while she told me her mum was diabetic.

I ran to the nearest cafe and explained there was a diabetic woman who needed a sugary drink and could I have a coke and come back and pay after as I had no money, the lady gave me a coke and I ran back, the diabetic mum drank the coke but was still shaking and sluring her words, I ran back to the cafe and explained and asked for another coke, the lady said no she wouldn't give me anything as I hadn't paid, I'm 7 months pregnant so running isn't something I look at ease doing, I also don't think I look like a kid trying to get some free coke.

I went to a shop further away and they gave me 2 cans of coke. The diabetic lady recovered quite quickly once she had drunk the coke.

Aibu to think that shops and cafes should give free sugery drinks if they are needed?

OP posts:

To you. Yes.

Not to lots of other people.

Your implication that OP should not even have asked in the first place as she didn't have the money, and instead gone waltzing off to look for a security guard, was bizarre.

Your posts on here generally have been bizarre.

You can see from the responses to you, that your posts have been out of step with the norm on this thread, and quite a few people have found what you have written actually distressing. Your response to that is to Grin. Ha ha ha.

Yellowfins · 19/07/2014 23:46

You really need to go and get a Cake seven

Yellowfins · 19/07/2014 23:47

Did you read what Jux posted?

I know the costs mount up for businesses, and I know that a few pence can make the difference between breaking even and making a loss, and that can make a significant difference to the ultimate viability of the business, so I would not judge someone who wouldn't part with stock for my sake

SevenZarkSeven · 19/07/2014 23:49

That's what Jux wrote. And?

It's not what you have been writing.

Appletini · 19/07/2014 23:49

I'm asking this out of genuine confusion and not trying to be judgey. If you have diabetes why isn't it your responsibility to carry things you might need with you?

Yellowfins · 19/07/2014 23:50

I never said I wrote it

Sigh

Hmm
SevenZarkSeven · 19/07/2014 23:51

Yellowfins are you under a mis-apprehension about how serious this type of medical situation can be?

You haven't commented about other things that might be asked for in medical emergencies, despite being asked quite a few times. I'm not sure why.

I can only assume that if you say you would understand them not being given you look horrible, and if you say you can't understand them not being given you look inconsistent.

Yellowfins · 19/07/2014 23:51

Careful Apple seven will be after you in a minute

Yellowfins · 19/07/2014 23:52

There is only one horrible person around here Grin

SevenZarkSeven · 19/07/2014 23:52

Appletini there are many posts on the thread explaining exactly that, including what happened with the woman in the OP.

Yellowfins · 19/07/2014 23:53

You haven't commented about other things that might be asked for in medical emergencies, despite being asked quite a few times. I'm not sure why

Errr

Because I don't have to do what you say Grin

LadyWithLapdog · 19/07/2014 23:53

From Wikipedia "In Germany, failure to provide first aid to a person in need is punishable under § 323c of its criminal penal code. However, any help one provides can and will not be prosecuted even if it made the situation worse or did not fulfill specific first aid criteria. People are thus encouraged to help in any way possible, even if the attempt is not successful." To discourage people just walking by.

SevenZarkSeven · 19/07/2014 23:54

Yellowfins I don't understand you at all.

Why do you find this situation funny?

The OP did a good thing.

I think you are on the wind up.

DHisgusted · 19/07/2014 23:55

Yellowfins, you are being disgusting. You disgust me. Luckily your views are located somewhere in outer space, not typical of ordinary decent people, including shop workers and managers.

On a few occasions in 20 odd years of being diabetic I have had a severe hypo and gone into a shop to get extra emergency carbs. When it is very acute I don't always pay, I don't have time if I am seconds away from unconsciousness and a major fit. In every case I have offered to pay after the incident and in every case they have refused to take my money.

OP you are an angel of mercy and a thoroughly decent person. Bless you.

Yellowfins · 19/07/2014 23:56

That is interesting lady in the uk there is no legal requirement to assist. Very different to Germany

3littlefrogs · 19/07/2014 23:56

OP you did exactly the right thing and potentially saved that poor woman's life.
The ignorance displayed here by people claiming to know something about diabetes is shocking.

It doesn't matter how well a person manages and controls their condition, or how carefully they test and check and plan, sometimes a hypo will happen and will happen so fast the person has no chance to help themselves.

Yellowfins · 19/07/2014 23:57
Grin
SevenZarkSeven · 19/07/2014 23:58

That doesn't mean there is an expectation in the UK that people won't help, yellowfins.

Maybe we don't have a law like that because there is no need for it because the vast majority of people do step up.

That has been my experience anyway, and a good thing too I think.

SevenZarkSeven · 19/07/2014 23:59

Why are you grinning at people telling you about times they have been in situations where they needed swift help to avert a medical crisis?

Um...

Confused
Blessedandgrateful · 20/07/2014 00:02

People like you restore my faith in humanity ,
And secondly it's a life threatening medical emergency - of course they should be quick on the mark to offer something for free.
A teaspoon of jam or honey ...
Good grief what is the world coming too with that attitude.

Yellowfins · 20/07/2014 00:02

Laws do vary, Germany law is interesting

Thanks lady

promisedyouarosegarden · 20/07/2014 00:04

Yellowfins you are an idiot.

OP, you did the right thing. DH is diabetic and ended up with a serious brain injury when he passed out and hit the pavement as the result of a hypo. I'd like to think that if he became ill in public again that there would be somebody like you there to help him.

As for a shop providing a drink, of course they should. I have access to a cafe where I work and wouldn't think twice about giving something away in an emergency. I would argue the toss with my manager later if needs be, pay for it myself if I had to, but I wouldn't be thinking of my job first and foremost.

Applefallingfromthetree2 · 20/07/2014 00:12

Yellow. I am still wondering why you are being so difficult
Is it because you have genuine concerns for the shop owner who may lose the cost of a sugary drink?
Is it because you feel the shop assistant was put under pressure and might not understand the need to help in a medical emergency?
Or
Is it that you feel that type 1diabetics are somehow to blame for their condition and for anything that goes wrong as a result of it?

OP - you are a star and I am sorry you have had to defend yourself for being a caring human being . Yellow you are a complete idiot and your view of humanity ( hordes of pregnant women and people with diabetes trying go rip off poor cafe owners who are within a hairs breadth of bankruptcy ) says more about you than anyone else. I hope one day that you face a medical emergency and rely on the kindness of strangers and that no one someone stops to help. My husband is type 1 and on the rare occasions he has had a bad hypo he wasn't able to even remember in which pocket his dextrose were- luckily I was with him . Heaven help him if Yellow had been passing by. Like others I am stunned at some comments on this thread and what they say about some people in our society. Truly shocking and depressing
