AIBU not to insure until Monday?

I have been negotiating this week on a particular kind of insurance policy. Spoke to someone yesterday, just as she was finishing work (I didn't realise they were only open until 5pm). She revised my quote and told me it would appear in the form of an email to me and that I could buy online. She promised me this. No email. No email this morning. Their original quote did take a bit of time to appear last time so I gave the company a ring to see if they would advise accepting the first quote and sorting the money out later. They advised not to do this. Which means that I am uninsured for a couple of days. AIBU not to insure? It would be just my luck for something to happen today or tomorrow!

What is the insurance for?

HannerHet · 19/07/2014 09:15

What sort of insurance? I hope your not thinking of driving your car with no insurance?

Flossyfloof · 19/07/2014 09:18

Oh sorry didn't think of that! No not the car!!
It lumps a number of things together and is a bit specialised.

It is buildings insurance so if the house fell down between now and Monday - or burned down - I would not be insured.

What are the risks to the 'things'? If its high risk I would say get it sorted asap. If nothings ever happened before and insurance is 'just in case' then wait til Monday

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 19/07/2014 09:22

I wouldn't be happy with it. Is there any sort of cooking off period with insurance? Could you take out today and then cancel Monday?

JustAShopGirl · 19/07/2014 09:23

thunder, lightening, flood risk..... that is this weekend....

Flossyfloof · 19/07/2014 09:24

Risk is purely to buildings. Of course, if it falls down, burns down, is struck by lightning that is major. Never happened to me before though, so risk is small.
Grin I keep on laughing at the thought of me asking on MN if it is OK to drive around with no insurance on the car!

With all the storms and lightning predicted I would be a bit uneasy without insurance.

Flossyfloof · 19/07/2014 09:25

WHen I spoke to them what I wanted them to say (and I told them this) was that I could take out the insurance now and sort the money out on Monday. He advised against this. But it isn't his property, is it?

Too risky. If anything happens to the house you'll still owe the bank your mortgage and have no home.

londonrach · 19/07/2014 09:30

Up yo you re risk. If house builds down with no insurance can you afford to rebuild. Your comment re other mn on car insurance is silly. It's illegal with good reason to drive without car insurance

Flossyfloof · 19/07/2014 09:34

Well of course it's illegal to drive without insurance. I just hadn't thought of it and would never do it. Why is that silly?

If you have a mortgage you will be in breach of the terms and conditions not to have sufficient buildings insurance in place. That in itself is a good enough reason to not wait until Monday. Yabu and a bit reckless. Unlikely as it may be that something would happen, you may end up with damaged property that is not insured, still owe the mortgage and be faced with breach of contract action by your lender.

If you own the property outright and can afford to rebuild or repair without insurance then take a calculated risk. Seems a bit foolhardy to go without insurance though when it is so easy to obtain.

LittleBearPad · 19/07/2014 09:39

Can you extend your old policy for a few days to cover the gap.

phantomnamechanger · 19/07/2014 09:40

I would not risk it in your shoes. one of the occasions when sods law will undoubtedly happen.

treaclesoda · 19/07/2014 09:41

Chances are that nothing will happen between now and Monday but that will be zero consolation if your building falls down this afternoon. So, no, I don't think I'd risk it.

Flossyfloof · 19/07/2014 10:40

Thanks ever so much, I have sorted it now!

Flossy - I giggled about your car insurance comment - I can just imagine the reaction! (Quite rightly so as it is illegal, but I can't imagine anyone being daft enough to post it here)

LastTango · 19/07/2014 11:56

If the house burned down ^^ would be rather appropriate!!!!

Flossyfloof · 19/07/2014 15:19

Thanks afterthought - I think I was a bit shocked and horrified at the thought so found it funny.
The first time I posted an AIBU, I think, someone questioned if what I was saying was true. I had a similar response - you can't always guess what others might think about what you are saying.
For the record, I would no more drive my car to the moon than drive without insurance! Or tax, MOT or anything else!

glad all is sorted.

According to the BBC, two houses were wrecked by lightning last night. NEVER let house insurance lapse!
