To ask why people wouldn't like their waters to be broken for them?

I had my waters broken for me with all 3 births

I've never in rl heard anyone speak negatively about it

But just saw a poster on a thread say "hope they don't have to break your waters for you" and wondered why?

I was always glad when they did it! With the last I actually asked for it to be done!

In some cases it is an artificial induction of labour. It depends which stage of labour it is done at but can make contractions come very strong, very suddenly.
Of course, if your baby is ready to come, it will come, and no intervention should be necessary.

ldt87 · 17/07/2014 21:05

I was dying for mine to be broken both times as I was ready to push but had some sort of mental block about pushing before my waters went! Second time though I was so sore and ready to push i couldn't stay still long enough for her to do it so they went on their own

Never heard any negativity about having waters broken.

gymboywalton · 17/07/2014 21:05

i didn't want mine broken because i was strep b positive and the longer the waters stay intact, the less chance there is of infection being passed to the baby.
that applies to people who are not strep b positive too.

having them broken before they are ready to go can start a cascade of intervention which is not great for mum or baby.

left to go naturally mine didn't go until i was pushing by babies out and i had shortish, normal labours.

gymboywalton · 17/07/2014 21:06

MY babies i should say

IHaveBrilloHair · 17/07/2014 21:06

Because they went whopping up my vaj with a crochet hook and it bloody hurt.

Jamdoughnutfiend · 17/07/2014 21:08

Because it hurts like the devil!

it was massively painful. apparently for some people it is like a pop. for others it is continual jabbing with a point. it took ages and it hurt a lot.

didn't stop a c section either.

CorruptBunny · 17/07/2014 21:09

It bloody hurt me too. Midwife was in up to her elbow. The extreme pain made me projectile vomit all over her! It really flipping hurt.

CalpolOnToast · 17/07/2014 21:10

Would have thought the less poking about the better in terms of infection. They broke my hind waters, the rest had gone at home. I never knew there was hind waters until then!

DikTrom · 17/07/2014 21:10

Once your waters are broken, the risk of infection is much greater hence the need to deliver within 24 hours.

Mumof3xox · 17/07/2014 21:10

Oooo

Thank you for the answers

None of mine hurt, I barely even felt it!

Good to know about the risks of infection though I hadn't heard that before

I had my waters broken and ot was horrid!! It really hurt and was not a pleasant experience at all.

However I do know rl people who had it done and had no pain. I think a lot depends on individual experience but I would never try and put someone off having it done.

If i hadn't have had mine done we would never have known dd had messed in her waters and they wouldn't have been quite so attentive when she was slow to respond after birth

MrsKoala · 17/07/2014 21:12

eeerrr because it hurts like a muther fucker! that's why. So do s&s's. Invasive, painful and horrible.

Mine were broken with both and I didn't feel a thing, I didn't realise that wasn't the norm!

ICanSeeTheSun · 17/07/2014 21:15

Had mine broken on both induced birth. I can't remember if it hurt or not.

I don't really have any sort of birth plan other than I want to hold my baby ASAP.

beatofthedrum · 17/07/2014 21:15

Always find it weird when people cheerfully say some stage of labour wasn't painful for them, how could anyone find it bad? Obviously for some people it's awful, it totally depends how your labour is progressing at the time. My sweep was one of my life's most unpleasant moments and the breaking of my waters wasn't far behind it...I understand some people find both procedures fine but I understand no labour is remotely the same (don't mean to sound tetchy).

FruitBasedDrinkForALady · 17/07/2014 21:16

It can be an unnecessary intervention, as it was with both of mine. DD was so unready to be born that when the obs went to break my waters, he had to go find a doctor with smaller hands... Hmm followed by lots of Sad

pengymum · 17/07/2014 21:17

Because when they broke mine, I had cord prolapse and had to have Emergency CS!
NOT.NICE Sad

whitepuddingsupper · 17/07/2014 21:18

It didn't hurt for me either and I was glad they did it because after being stuck at 3cm for hours I went to 9cm in the next couple of hours.

FryOneFatManic · 17/07/2014 21:20

I think I must have been ready for my waters to break, but the midwife told me the membrane was quite thick and it wouldn't break easily. It hurt slightly when she did it and yes, the contractions ramped up massively, but I feel it was the right decision for me at the time. DS shot out fairly quickly after that.

DramaAlpaca · 17/07/2014 21:21

I didn't want any more intervention than necessary, and I didn't want my very straightforward labours speeded up.

I've had three births and with all of them the waters only went just as I was about to give birth.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 17/07/2014 21:21

Sometimes it's necessary, if additional monitoring is needed for example, but genially, it's a bit of an old fashioned and unneccessary intervention.
There can be a physiological benefit to keeping "the waters" intact during labour.
And it hurts.

elliejjtiny · 17/07/2014 21:25

My waters always go before labour so I am always leaking and dreading induction/C-section. With DS5 I got an infection and we were both really poorly so to me having your waters broken would be like jumping off a ladder, something you don't want to happen by accident so you definitely don't do it on purpose.
