to think this is a brutal and unworkable suggestion by my boss?

Staff work five days over seven, shiftwork (7am start to 11pm finish - eight hours of these hours daily). Should anyone have docs appts, weddings to go to, no childcare etc, we can request our days off to fall on the days we need. Its a request basis and usually falls so that first comes is first served. We have a team of ten, with three needed on shift am and three needed on shift pm so there is always plenty of flexibility for requests.

The team are given targets, totally standard, and the boss has the target of us acheiving our targets.

The bosses latest suggestion is that those that hit their targets get to choose their own schedule for the month regardless of any prewritten requests from the rest of the team.

Aibu to think that if I request 1st Oct well.in advance for a specific reason then someone who hits their target for september decides they are going to be off 1st October, that is an awful way of trying to "encourage" people to hit their targets and could actually caise real resentment within a very close knit team?

How is that going to work?!

What if everyone hits their target and decides that they are having Xmas day off? Nope, it is a ridiculous idea and YANBU

It'll cause rifts and chaos.i see why you're upset
Yiur current system works,no particular need ti change
Boss can reward performance in other ways

TSSDNCOP · 17/07/2014 18:37

Yep. Why doesn't he give the people who have met their target some time off their next shift. I'd rather come in later/go home an hour early than practically anything.

WeAllHaveWings · 17/07/2014 18:37

Yes, shit idea. Sounds like he trying to find a reward without any cost. Can your teams come up with a better/fairer suggestion for him?

So glad you didnt think I was just being a stroppy git!

Btw the thing we are targetted on is a sort of loyalty scheme for our customers. Our business is incredibly busy with regulars who are already on the loyalty scheme.

on a given day we may encounter 150 customers, and roughly 120 of them are loyalty card holders. This means the potential for signing anyone else up is low and then factor in those who will never ever use our service again......the targets are hard acheived.

Whilst this then means the likelihood of everyone hittong the target low, it also means it inst going to work. Incentives when your pool of potential targets are so small is not worth much

Unworkable. Perhaps the top achiever has first refusal on shifts. I'm used to do these kind of rotas, that's perfectly acceptable.

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 17/07/2014 18:47

It's a terrible idea perhaps you should collectively agree to not meet your targets so no one wins.

It's not incentive anyway it is hovering over you with a large stick saying if you don't meet your targets you can't go to your dentist app/wedding/funeral etc.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 17/07/2014 18:50

Sometimes requests are for lack of childcare. How the boss will expect someone to come in for a shift they have requested off due to childcare Ill.never know

The proposed scheme is going to cause more negative feelings than anything else. All of those who have the commitments you mention in your OP will become anxious that they won't be able to fulfil them, and those who are lucky enough not to have the commitments won't have any incentive to achieve the targets!

If there was £100 of shopping vouchers on offer for the best performer each month, this would cost the company £1,200 a year (and I believe there's some sort of tax advantage to this, but don't know the details). Much more enticing, surely?
