So popped in today to just get some newborn bodysuits, I have loads of 0-3 but no newborn, but as baby is predicted to be big didn't want to spend a lot on bodysuits that might not get worn, but better to have some just incase he isn't that big iyswim.

So I get my white bodysuits 3 pack for £2.50 I pick up a few, then think oh let's have a look at their newborn baby boy clothes....ONE flipping rail, about 7 outfits :( I then look around and there are about 60 rails of dresses and girls outfits!!!

Why so little baby boy clothes??

I left with my bodysuits slightly miffed that they had half a shop for baby girls but fuck all really for baby boys :( maybe I should just let him roam naked?!

I've got 3 boys and I can tell you, it's like this in nearly every shop I ever went in.

It's quite as bad as it was when I had my eldest 22yrs ago, but it hasn't got that much better either.

WorraLiberty · 17/07/2014 14:33

*not quite as bad

Cookethenookms · 17/07/2014 14:39

Ugh, i hate this.

About the most exciting print you can get on boys clothes is stripes.

Have a look in TK Maxx. They have lots of unusual stuff. I found a lot of Little Green Radicles clothes in there recently and they're gorgeous!

squoosh · 17/07/2014 14:39

I know someone who runs a (terribly overpriced) children's boutique. She says that 80% of her revenue comes from sales of girls clothes.

Do people buy more clothes for girls? I'm not sure.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 17/07/2014 14:39

I find this surprising. I have a DS and a DD and never had any problem with getting boys' stuff. Try Sainsbury's for reasonably priced, practical and cute baby boy and unisex stuff.

Boudica1990 · 17/07/2014 14:40

Its so silly, I mean even if I were having a girl I wouldn't dress her in frilly dresses all the time probably just some leggings and a t-shirt for day to day but there were rails of them!! I counted about 20 different frilly dresses!

When will shops start to realise that perhaps mothers of boys would like a wider selection of clothing than 2 pairs of jeans some chinos and then four or five character t-shirts :(

They also grow so quickly, I'm loathed to spend a fortune on outfits that will last week's!

I'm sorta lucky I made a decision early on to get mainly white sleepsuit and bodysuits so they can all be washed together on mass, I have very little coloured clothes as I want the washing loads to be easy.

Welcome to the world of boys. its like this in almost every shop, rails and rails of girls clothes, 1 rail of boy clothes.

Loads of shelves for girls for different occasions, one rail of shoes for boys and all will be either trainer type shoes or chunky boots. Never any nice going out smart shoes.

I suppose boys boys must be naked most of the time.
When you do find a shop that sells boy clothes and shoes with a good range, its a premium shop Smile

Hairylegs47 · 17/07/2014 14:45

I was in there myself this week and I know what you mean!

I have 5 grandsons, the selection was pitiful.

Asda and Sainsburys are better, I ended up there getting them a top or 3 each.

Blush Mike the Knight with detachable cloak, too cute. Jake the Pirate tee shirts, Lightening MacQueen tops.

weeblueberry · 17/07/2014 14:47

Like someone said TK is great. H&M is also pretty good for boys clothes. :)

effinandjeffin · 17/07/2014 14:48

Agreed, have found this in our local Asda too. And when I do find something I like for DS you can guarantee that his size has sold out Hmm

Sparklypants · 17/07/2014 14:50

H&m has some really lovely and unusual boys clothes.

Boudica1990 · 17/07/2014 14:51

Ive now made the decision DS can rock up in whatever he wants to go wherever, so if we end up doing the weekly shop with a 2 year old in a Spiderman or ninja turtles costume, I'm going to blame the shops for there lack of clothing selection Wink OR if he likes to go au natural and strip off that's fine too haha we just might need to have words when he's sitting his GCSE's in the buff lol

But seriously like many of you have said it's disheartening.

Yes I have the same problem! Thought it was just me noticing the girls pretty dresses more!!
Mines 5 and it's been like that from birth I'm afraid

SpringBreaker · 17/07/2014 14:54

there are rails of them because nobody wants to buy them.. sainsburys does loads of things for baby boys, I ave never had a problem buying for them in there

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 17/07/2014 14:55

I find h&m great.

Also Next for special occasion stuff.

TeenAndTween · 17/07/2014 14:59

By the time you have discounted all the frilly pink girls stuff with 'little princess' all over them, there probably isn't much more than there is in the boys' section. It's an illusion that there is more choice for girls. Grin

TheOnlyPink · 17/07/2014 15:00

This gets right on my tits. I have two boys and live in Ireland. I buy their clothes online from Asda because I could not get a tshirt that wasn't dark blue, shades of brown or green for either of my boys. Got some gorgeous bright tshirt and shorts, oranges, neon blues, reds. Far more interesting.

I think next are the worst. In my local one the lower floor is split in three equal sections, defined by full walls. One is mens clothes, second is toddler and older girls. Third is boys, but it only fills half the section, the rest is shoes, homewares and baby girls. Huge difference!

Angry

why won't they let me spend!!

Boudica1990 · 17/07/2014 15:02

Looking at my baby clothes people are going to think I'm weird.....nearly everything is white. Even most of my bedding is cream or lemon, some mint green as green is my favourite colour Blush

I just didn't see the point in going blue, when white was always more cost effective shall we say haha.

But all I've got for "going out" is some chinos and t-shirts.

Why can't they make those cute little sailor costumes boys were always dressed in, old school style haha Grin

starfishmummy · 17/07/2014 15:15

It also seems to be sods law that whatever sized clothes you need are never in the sales. So when looking for baby items everything will be too big. Then when they get to be toddlers there will be loads of baby stuff (and big kids clothes etc)

sewingandcakes · 17/07/2014 15:16

I've got 3 boys and it's always been a problem. I avoid character t-shirts, and I like them to wear bright colours, so it's very hard to find something good. H&M is sometimes ok though.

I also dislike the t-shirts with slogans on the front, especially the ones that make all boys out as being naughty, noisy, etc...

bleedingheart · 17/07/2014 15:27

H&M is great for primary coloured long sleeved bodysuits in organic cotton. Normally 3 for 2 as well. My DS's lived in them under short sleeved tops and with joggers or lined cotton trousers. They also do nice short sleeved body suits with longer legs in, sort of top and shorts in one.

BackforGood · 17/07/2014 15:32

Surely newborns just wear generic bodysuits / vests / etc with giraffes on or stripes or spots ? What's with this 'girls' / 'boys' clothes - my ds and my dds all wore the same stuff at that age. (Literally, passed down) Confused

ScarlettlovesRhett · 17/07/2014 15:52

Boudica - be careful what you wish for with old fashioned outfits.

My mil (really lovely woman, I get on with her brilliantly), bought me two 'beautiful' outfits for my pfb boy. One was a proper old fashioned blue Andy-Pandy stylee striped romper with white blouse, the other a sailor-suit romper complete with sailor hat.

I dressed him in them when he was big enough for the obligatory photos, but couldn't actually leave the house with him dressed like that due to how ridiculous he looked (and I thought it was unfair of me to keep laughing at my poor baby Blush)

differentnameforthis · 17/07/2014 16:13

I would rather 7 outfits than rails and rails of pink fluffy furry sparkly bollocks with 'princess/fairy/whatever' written all over it.
