WIBU to refuse this offer from insurance company?

Our lovely wooden bed was a present from all the guests at our wedding 12 years ago. It's broken. They sent a company out to assess it. They decided it's not worth fixing (upsetting, but fine).

This third party company called to say "go to this URL and tell us if you like the bed we think is a reasonable replacement". I do this. The bed is 700 quid. Our was 1400 (not including the mattress). I say no, I don't like it. He says "you've not even read the spec". His point was it's the same size and colour. My point was it's not the same quality. So I declined it.

After several calls from me and diddly squat contact from them they have offered us 800. Minus the 150 excess.

I don't want to accept it. I don't think it's fair. We have never claimed for contents before (apart from a lightening strike 10 years ago with a different insurer). So I don't know if they are just holding out in the hope we will accept, or whether we are within our rights to turn this down too and hope to get closer to the 1400. Anyone with experience of these things got any advice please?

Finally, once this is over I will be ditching them. Any recommendations for companies who are actually there when you need them?!

TIA

How funny lougie. Actually it isn't a traditional sleigh one. It has a sort of curved top. It's beautiful. Can you remember how much yours was? We bought ours in April 2002, right after our wedding.

Thanks Kate, that's helpful.

I'm with hacked on this! It wouldn't occur to me to claim for a 12 yr old bed unless there had be some dramatic accident and a meteor had crashed through the house onto it!
My OH's best mate is a skilled cabinet maker. He can make and mend pretty much anything in wood (unless it has been splintered by a meteor Grin ) so I'm sure you can get it fixed!

We could only get a double because they were finishing the line. If I remember correctly it was the display frame with a new mattress so wegot it for £750, I think.

Wow. Ours is a king size. The frame was 1400 and the mattress was 500. Sounds like you got a good deal although obviously it was the display one. We got a display 50" TV once for a really good price. Had only been out the box for 2 weeks!

I spent 2k on a bed that's only lasted 4 years. I had no idea you could claim on insurance for something like that

As a PP said, find 3 options you would be happy with and send those to insurance company explaining why they are similar quality. Our car was written off a few years ago and the insurance company gave a very low offer to start. We sent links to sale adverts for almost identical cars in terms of age, mileage, condition to show what it would actually cost to replace. They increased their offer significantly. Easier to show similarities between cars than beds though! Good luck
