To think I should know my child's teacher for September by now

I can't believe I still don't know who will be teaching DD in year 1 in September. Apparently we won't find out until Monday with only 2 days left of school . I think this is crazy but perhaps aibu and it's fine to be kept waiting until the lady minute. Would love to know if our school is in the minority or not .

I can't believe anyone cares Confused

It's not like an alien or a zombie Thatcher is going to turn up Grin

It will be a teacher. From your school. Or another who has been recruited and will turn up in September .

Marcelinewhyareyousomean · 16/07/2014 23:08

I'm not bothered. Ds will be going into y3/ juniors. I don't know anything about the teaching staff.

SuburbanRhonda · 16/07/2014 23:14

Although it should not matter who is teaching your child, I'm surprised the school hasn't already had a "class shuffle", where all the children go into their new class for a day.

Or have they already had that, but you still don't know who the teacher is? I would ask the school. But be reasonable about it as there may be a perfectly good explanation and you don't want to look a fool (I'm guessing) Wink

BlackeyedSusan · 16/07/2014 23:17

it matters greatly if your child is only just turning five, or your child has autism.

RedSoloCup · 16/07/2014 23:19

we had ours yesterday, they like to keep us in suspense but I like that :)

littleducks · 16/07/2014 23:20

They do this at our school, I found it frustrating the first year but have got used to it now.

Doitonmyown · 16/07/2014 23:20

No at the moment school hasn't told any of the classes who will be teaching them . We all have to wait until Monday but in the mean time there are lots of rumours and the children have started guessing. It seems v last minute to me.

MidniteScribbler · 16/07/2014 23:31

At our school you find out on the first day of school.

Goblinchild · 16/07/2014 23:31

Cuts down on the amount of whinging the SLT and head have to go through from parents who want to contest the decision on spurious and petty grounds. The emails and letters and 'Just wanting a word' and the occasional spite shown by some parents towards another child.
Any child with a specific need to be in a particular class should already have been sorted and parents involved if necessary.
Why do you need to know? You've still got almost 7 weeks to get used to the idea.

Happy36 · 16/07/2014 23:32

You are being unreasonable. This is totally normal for any school. What would you do over the summer if you did know his or her name?

katese11 · 16/07/2014 23:33

We don't know either and I'd really like to. Ds is sad about leaving his reception teacher and I wanna be able to say "It's OK, Ms X will look after you"

Goblinchild · 16/07/2014 23:34

Again., you've got 7 weeks to tell him 'Mrs X will look after you'

BobPatandIgglePiggle · 16/07/2014 23:35

Teachers are still finishing up this year!

Are the school recruiting? Maybe they genuinely don't know who will be teaching some of the classes yet?

ICanSeeTheSun · 16/07/2014 23:38

Ds has known for about a month, he knows where his seat is going to be where to hang his coat up and the lay out of the class. ( he is asd and need to see it and do it serveral times)

Dd I knew a few days a go, she will cope fine.

fluffydoge · 16/07/2014 23:42

They might not know yet. Pretty sure when my DC were at primary we didn't find out until the first day back, classes stayed the same from reception - year 6. There's probably a meeting of some sort at the end of this week to finalise it and sort out any new teachers who are joining.

Iffy2014 · 16/07/2014 23:42

(shrug) I'm a teacher... I still don't know which classes I will be teaching in September. No big deal, it's normal for most places.

Why does it matter so much?

Goblinchild · 16/07/2014 23:44

'Why does it matter so much?'

Are all your parents so lovely and tolerant that you truly don't know? Smile

BackforGood · 16/07/2014 23:45

I think it's a real positive to find out with just a couple of days to go.
Once people find out - then the focus all switches to that, and you can lose the last 4 weeks of term with "thinking about" what it's going to be like next year.

Also, as said up thread, it cuts down on those parents who think they have the right to dictate changes they would like making, to the school.

Doitonmyown · 16/07/2014 23:45

Thanks for replies . All of my friends at other schools seem to have known for a while / have have had settling it etc and I must admit I assumed it was our school being a bit late in sorting it. Yes in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter and probably once we do find out it won't be mentioned again until the day before term starts but the nosey / curious part of me would still really like to find out

OP posts:
Iffy2014 · 16/07/2014 23:49

I'm in secondary, I'm not required to be terribly hands-on with the parents. But I really can't imagine why it would matter so much to know before the last day of term. What difference would it make to a NT child? Year seven all seem to be coping fine with not knowing which THIRTEEN new teachers they will have in September.

Though I will admit, the nosey/curious part of ME would like to know which sets I'm teaching now, please!

BlackeyedSusan · 16/07/2014 23:54

the year sevens are mostly 11 or 12 though. the child going into year one could still be four it is generally accepted as good practice to have settling in day s for the youngest children... children are now going into year one at the same age they were just starting school a few years ago. (term after fifth birthday, many straight into year one with settling in sessions... )

MidniteScribbler · 16/07/2014 23:54

Are all your parents so lovely and tolerant that you truly don't know?

As I said, students here don't find out until the day they return to school and check the signs on the door of the classroom. We don't finalise teacher assignments until the week after school finishes and we have our meetings, and then we still have to determine which class each student will be in, sometimes that may not be until the week we get back to school. Parents do accept it, because it is just the way it is.

Doitonmyown · 16/07/2014 23:58

Yes DD isn't 5 until the end of August and has her heart set on a particular teacher who is one of the current year 1 teachers . We are managing expectations at the mo

OP posts:
Goblinchild · 16/07/2014 23:58

Most schools have their settling in days in the last week of term, some do it on the last Monday. Several schools that I know of have done a number of integrating activities, from joint sports sessions to mixing and moving around.
Unless you've been in the situation where a number of confident and determined parents are convinced that only they should decide where their child should be placed, you might not understand how unpleasant and stressful it is, or how upset parents of less-favoured children can become.

MrsGeorgeMichael · 17/07/2014 00:40
