To think that no one is going to steal DS

I was running late due to an accident on the motorway and when I got home the Sainsbury's delivery guy was just about to leave thinking that I wasn't in. I parked the car outside my neighbour's house and left DS asleep in his car seat, locking the car behind me so I could catch the delivery guy.

I quickly unloaded the shopping in about 2 minutes in case DS woke up and the guy pointed out that I'd left the baby in the car. I said I knew but that he was asleep and would be fine for a few minutes. He proceeded to lecture me about how I couldn't do that because didn't I know that people steal cars with babies in.

AIBU to want to be credited with a tiny bit of common sense? Who on earth is going to attempt to steal a locked car from a quiet residential street in sight of me, several other adults and numerous children?

Ignore him

Trapper · 16/07/2014 19:04

The only thing I would have done differently would have been to leave te car unlocked.

Smile politely and ignore.

Doingakatereddy · 16/07/2014 19:06

I'd be more concerned if you hadn't opened windows. Also, be careful of locking door on child as in some car models the car alarm had an internal motion sensor that can be activated by child waking up.

The sainsburys driver has every right to challenge you - one persons common sense is another's mistake

fairgame · 16/07/2014 19:10

YANBU you could see him and it was only for a few minutes.

LongTimeLurking · 16/07/2014 19:11

meh, I don't blame the driver he may have been trying to help.... you may have genuinely forgotten!

Although I don't think many criminals deliberately steal cars with babies in and they would be going some to break into a locked car and get away with it in broad daylight while you are only a few feet away...

soapybubbles123 · 16/07/2014 19:16

I didn't mind him pointing out that DS was in the car, I wouldn't put it past me to forget him. It was the lecture about baby stealing car thieves that annoyed me. I may be absent minded sometimes (although not this time) but I'm not completely irresponsible.

YABU to think it would never happen. The delivery man was right, people do and it does happen.

YANBU to think it is a risk worth taking, the likelihood of it happening significantly outweighing the benefit to you in this case.

CoffeeTea103 · 16/07/2014 19:54

Yabu to think you are above this happening to you. Children get stolen while their parents backs are turned.

HappyAgainOneDay · 16/07/2014 19:55

I won't say when I last changed my bed

As for towels, they might well be clean straight out of the shower so the towels will might be clean but doesn't it depend on where they wipe to dry?

GirlWithTheLionHeart · 16/07/2014 19:56

I would've done the same but locked it

Billygoats · 16/07/2014 20:03

happy wrong thread. Grin

I don't think he was wrong to challenge you OP.

DoJo · 16/07/2014 20:04

Er, Happy, I think you're supposed to be here, defending us slovenly mingers!

ChoccaDoobie · 16/07/2014 20:17

Not judging you but it would depend where the car was parked. I wouldn't leave my Dd in a car up the road but outside the house or outside the neighbours house (terraced houses) when I was just in the doorway if I really could see her at all times then yes, I would.

I have a friend who had a very, very relaxed attitude to things like this and it bordered on the insane the places she would leave him as a little one.

missymayhemsmum · 16/07/2014 20:20

How considerate of your delivery man to let you know that, should it happen again, he would be delighted to wait while you take your (just woken) baby indoors and feed, change and settle him before returning for your shopping!

TeacupDrama · 16/07/2014 20:45

babies can die in overheated cars but not in 2 minutes or even 5

I would be more concerned about dc overheating than being stolen. it was hot today. Sorry op but yabu to leave your child in the car.

MrsMook · 16/07/2014 22:17

Overheating is a more rational concern, but I wouldn't want to leave the DCs where I wouldn't be prepared to leave windows open anyway.

Cripes, where on earth do you live OP?! Wink

cosikitty · 16/07/2014 22:20

I doubt the car is going to go from normal temperature to killing the baby in the few minutes it took the OP to out her shopping in the house!! Blimey.

If I was in the business of nicking cars (I am not so what would I know) A child in the car would put me off, it seems a bad selling point.

Appletini · 17/07/2014 22:46

Given the weather you absolutely should not have left him in the car.
