To ask cleaner to clear floor in same way as me?

Sleepyhoglet · 16/07/2014 17:31

The cleaner is hypothetical. I'm looking into employing someone soon for a couple of hours a week.

When I clean the bathroom floor I mix up floor fluid with water in a jug then use a j cloth to scrub the floor. Using a mop just seems to slosh water everywhere and I don't really have room to store one. Is any potential cleaner going to tell me they won't do this?!

They might want more wonga if your method makes the job longer, more laborious and tiring.

I would. Grin

MrsPresley · 16/07/2014 17:36

Well I wouldn't do this, but I'm not a cleaner and I certainly couldn't get down on my hands and knees to clean a floor Grin

All you can do is ask, maybe the cleaner will have his/her own mop and bucket.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 16/07/2014 17:37

I expect they'll do what you want, they charge by the hour. If it takes an hour to clean your bathroom floor, then it'll cost you £10 (or thereabouts) plus VAT

Most cleaners will do what you want, you pay for their time.

DiaDuit · 16/07/2014 17:37

I cant see a jcloth being very effective at scrubbing! Certainly not more effective than my vilesa mop with the scrubby bits on it. Mopping doesnt slosh water about when done properly. You could ask cleaner to bring their own mop and bucket. I did as i prefer my own mop and bucket. People buy crap mops and buckets. Baffles me.

CMOTDibbler · 16/07/2014 17:37

Doesn't sound unreasonable. My cleaner uses a mop on the hard floors downstairs, but prefers to do the bathroom floor with a cloth as she says she has to get down to get all the bits round the loo, bath, shower etc anyway.

A good cleaner should meet any (reasonable) requests you have on how things are done

Janethegirl · 16/07/2014 17:38

Your house, your call. I'd discuss what you want with any prospective cleaner and if they're not happy with your requirements, don't use them.
I agree that mops use too much water, but have you considered a steamer?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/07/2014 17:39

Surely what matters is that your floor ends up as clean as you want it to be? If you don't have room to store a mop, maybe your cleaner could being her own.

foreverforaging · 16/07/2014 17:44

I always clean the floor with a cloth/scrubby thing. Don't really have room for a mop and bucket.

Maybe I should get a mop... Hmm

r2d2ismyidealman · 16/07/2014 17:47

I've found my few attempts at getting a cleaner were disappointing. I am particular and they never did it just right. But I've just hit on a new idea. I'm going to get a cleaner to help me rather than to do it all on their own so that I can have more control. I think I might have to find someone young enough to not find that annoying!

ShineSmile · 16/07/2014 17:48

Have you thought of buying a steam cleaner?

ThatBloodyWoman · 16/07/2014 17:52

I can't see the problem with saying how you'd like things done if you've done it yourself.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 16/07/2014 17:53

I think it's a bit much to employ someone to do a job and then tell them how to do it. As long as the floor is clean, there's no problem I would have thought?

YouAreMyFavouriteWasteOfTime · 16/07/2014 17:56

I think you should focus on the output not the method. i.e. as long as the floor is cleaned to your standard it does not matter how they actually clean it.

HaroldLloyd · 16/07/2014 17:59

The cleaners I see in the houses bring their own equipment.

As long as the floor is clean I don't see the matter how they have done it, to insist that they do it in the most labour intensive and back breaking way seems daft.

Silvercatowner · 16/07/2014 18:09

Our cleaner told us to buy a certain type of mop. :(

Topseyt · 16/07/2014 18:10

If you have a special mop bucket with a wringer you clip over the top to squeeze the mop out then it certainly doesn't just slosh water everywhere.

Many of the professional cleaners I have come across normally bring their own stuff anyway, and possibly for health and safety reasons would not want to do the job in the daft and back-breaking way you seem to like.

As long as the floor gets cleaned well then what on earth is the issue?

samsam123 · 16/07/2014 18:13

better off with a steam cleaner

Toottootoffwego · 16/07/2014 18:15

YANBU but to be honest, you're as well just closing the door and letting them get on with it.

Sleepyhoglet · 16/07/2014 18:18

I suppose I just don't want to store a mop or steamer!

DiaDuit · 16/07/2014 18:57

Then just ask whoever you contact if they can bring their own mop and bucket. It shouldnt be a problem.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/07/2014 18:59

Sleepyhoglet - why does it matter how the cleaner cleans the floor, as long as the floor is clean, and you don't have to find space for a mop? Confused

MaryWestmacott · 16/07/2014 19:07

As long as the floor is clean, it doesn't matter how they do it, ask of they bring their own equipment.

(We have a flash power mop, totally rip off way to clean, but no water sloshing, no bucket, far easier)

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 16/07/2014 19:17

I didn't have a mop and bucket until my bathroom flooded. And don't say you don't plan on having a flood. No one plans a flood. Anyhoo I use it all the time now with hot bleachy soapy water and a mop with scrubby bits on. I love my bathroom when it's freshly cleaned and mopped.

ColdCottage · 16/07/2014 19:17

I think if you are paying for their time, provide the tools and clear instructions as to how you would like it done it shouldn't be a problem. Especially if you do so that shows it is not that you think they won't do a good job but it is just that you prefer it is done in a specific way.

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 16/07/2014 19:22

Meant to add that it doesn't get done as often as it should and I have a spray bottle from Aldi and that days hand towel before it goes in the wash at my disposal. But the mop and bucket comes out for those rare big cleans.
