To hate when a television adaptation uses actors who look nothing like the description in the book

I was watching an Agatha Christie adaptation last night and two of the main characters looked absolutely nothing like the way they're described by AC. In fact one looked the exact opposite. I know casting directors have to take account of other things besides looks, but I find it irritating when there seems to be no resemblance between the book description and the actor chosen.

AIBU?

I'm afraid I just found Bonnie Wright a very mediocre actress as Ginny Weasley, and not just because she didn't have that many scenes in the later films. She was just wrong. Too square-jawed, too plain, and no chemistry whatever in the romance scenes.

Of course there are other issues to do with the writing of the character in the books which don't help (I could write an essay on that, but I'll spare you all Grin), but her acting did nothing to salvage it.

All creatures great and small.
They butchered tbose books.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 17/07/2014 14:01

Jodie Foster should play Scarpetta.

Vintagejazz · 17/07/2014 14:08

I actually thought Dawn French was all wrong as George in The Famous Five Grin

Oh but Robert Hardy as Siegfried! How can you possibly object?

chrome100 · 17/07/2014 14:21

I'm in bed with a cold and just finished watching the film of We Need to Talk about Kevin.

I thought it was wonderfully cast - particularly Tilda Swinton as the mum and the oldest Kevin actor.

HecatePropylaea · 17/07/2014 14:37

How could I possibly object? Angry

Siegfried was a tall, thin man with a tidy moustache and great poise and was not much older than James. Not an old, short pudding.

AND they took James' activities and randomly redistributed them among Siegfried and Tristan.

And don't even get me started on how he suddenly wasn't Scottish.

Someone should be shot, frankly.

(I may need to get out more...)

Jellified · 17/07/2014 14:43

Haven't read the whole thread but yanbu.
Though the first thing that springs to mind is Hiccup in How to train a dragon. Lisel in the Book thief is all wrong too. Hmm I sound very immatureSmile

ParsingFlatly · 17/07/2014 14:56

Well, OK, I'll give you the not being Scottish. But, but lalalala fingersinears notlistening to the rest. Hardy is Siegfried!

(I came to books through the TV series, not the other way round, but we'll gloss over that.)

HecatePropylaea · 17/07/2014 15:13

Oh Parsing. I had you down as a sensible poster.
It's just so very disapointing.
I feel a daily mail sadface coming on.

I also fear i don't know how to spell disapointing because that looks weird.

Don't make me put you on the naughty step.

HazleNutt · 17/07/2014 15:34

God yes Jack Reacher!

Interestingly, when I first saw Gone with the Wind, I was really disappointed in the choice of actors. I read the book when I was very young and didn't really get the dynamic between the characters. Ashley was especially disappointing, surely he was supposed to be gorgeous? Re-read the book recently and now it seems like it was the perfect choice - such a limp, annoying man.

BillnTedsMostFeministAdventure · 17/07/2014 15:39

Yy sockqueen and others - Alan Rickman is now 68 and Michael Gambon now 73 - yet Dumbledore was already a teacher 50 years previously when Tom Riddle was at Hogwarts.

I think Emma Watson was fine as Hermione in the beginning, she got Hollywood style quicker than Hermione in the book (who of course got her teeth magically reduced etc).

thinkofablinkingnamewoman · 17/07/2014 16:02

Alan Rickman is 68?! But he's one of my all time perfect men and cannot be allowed to age beyond...ooh, about mid 40s.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 17/07/2014 16:07

In my mind Ginny Weasley's look is dominated by her role as Seeker - petite and speedy with lightning reflexes. Bonnie Wright is a good looking young woman but she's not my idea of a Seeker.

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 17/07/2014 16:08

And I think they cast Alan Rickman as Snape on the grounds that he was perfect in all respects other than age, and then had to miscast the other marauders to match him.

EvilStepMam · 17/07/2014 16:22

Wishful As much as I luff Aiden Gillan, he is not Hendricks.

Hendricks was a tall, skinny, pony failed Mancunian, to Thornes short (er) stocky Londoner.

Also (sorry on a roll) Davd Holland I thought was tall, slim, fair floppg hair, never without his notepad
Oh and the doctor Coburn, supposed to have short silver hair.

Grrrr I knew I shouldn't have watched even a smidge.

LikeTheShoes · 17/07/2014 17:22

I was going to say Ellie from "girls in love" too -weird.

I think they did change her brother's character too, in the books he was about 4 or 5, in the TV series he wasn't born yet (unless they made more series after I stopped watching)

new Daario is pants.

Garry Oldman is blergh. 14 year old me thought Johnny Depp should have been Sirius, but having seen him in Sweeny Todd I expect he would have been dreadful.

-Gandalf- Ian McKellen should have been Dumbledore.

Tallalime · 17/07/2014 17:45

The piercingly blue eyed, blonde bearded chap from I am Legend. Really?? Instead we got Will Smith playing as bloody always Will Smith

MarysDressSways1 · 17/07/2014 19:51

Re jilly cooper, Rupert in Riders, bleeeee. Awful.
Yes they do need to remake that!
Wasn't happy with all the casting in The Man Who made.. Either.

Golden compass sucked balls in all sorts of ways and Daniel Craig was allll wrong.

I did love the casting in I Capture The Castle though, especially Henry Caville. (That his name? Superman..)
