AIBU to consider Karndean in the sitting room?

I can't have carpet. I have been looking at either solid wood or engineered wood but have now discovered Karndean. Looks good, very quick to lay - but will I regret it?

I like wood as it's easy maintenance, although I think karndean is too.

Karndean is great and looks good. Its quiet compared to laminate (when you walk on it) and waterproof. I know carpet is back in fashion, but just seems so unhygienic compared to my karndean floors.

I've got Karndean in our entire downstairs. Much less noisy than previous house where we had engineered wood, very easy to keep clean, and much less prone to dents and chips

I wouldnt do it if you have dogs, the slipping drives me mad.

Quick Step is a cheaper alternative to Kardean and rates well.

I considered it too, it came out a similar price to engineered flooring (we have underfloor heating and so can't have solid wood). I went to a showroom and compared the two products. IMO they are very different. Karndean is posh lino and is not comparable to wood in anything other than it can be made to look a bit like it. Side by side, they are very different and Karndean is very obviously NOT wood (even their premium line). Yes, it has plus points over wood (easier to clean, warmer, softer, quieter, more hardwearing) but aesthetically it just seemed to kitchen/bathroomy and not appropriate for a more formal living space.

We have carpet in our lounge which has patio doors next to the garden and when we first had it put down I thought it was a mistake because it would get ruined. We've recently knocked through kitchen and dining room and have Karndean in there but the noise travels so much! It's a relief to sink into the quietness of the lounge now!

too kitchen/bathroomy

I have a wool carpet in the sitting room and marmoleum throughout downstairs elsewhere .
I looked at Karndean but decided against it - I worried about toxins .

We have karndean in our kitchen/diner. If I just look at the bit of the room with the sofa in I can imagine it looking nice in a living room too.

Flossyfloof · 16/07/2014 08:26

Oh dear -not really any further forward, but thanks so much for your thoughts.
I think definitely good for kitchen and utility room but am still not sure for hall and sitting room.

it looks good in all rooms. Very hard wearing and a much nicer look and feel than laminate. Less likely to scratch and be noisy like engineered wood.

I chose a dark Karndean flooring (walnut) for my living room nine years ago.

Was amazing when I was single and never in my flat. Looked great !

Not so good now there are three of us (including a baby) who are in the flat much more. It's not very forgiving and shows up everything (although I appreciate that is due to the dark colour more than the product). Still looks good when it is cleaned so possibly the answer is to clean it a bit more but to clean it properly it really does need a steam (although I don't think they are officially recommended for it) or a good old fashioned scrub .....

It also scratches and marks relatively easily ..... (again possibly more noticeable because it it is dark). There is an official cleaning kit which apparently gets rid of surface scratches but I've never done that.

Lets just say I'm moving soon and won't be putting it in the next place !

We have Karndean throughout the ground floor and love it. I wouldn't go for a wood substitute look though. We have a stone tile pattern that looks fab.

SistersOfPercy · 16/07/2014 10:20

I have a wood floor in my living/dining room. I'd considered Karndean myself but it was too expensive for what we needed so I went with a cheaper, grooved wood.
Best thing I ever did.

Yep, its noisy when the dog has 'a moment' around 7pm at night (never did understand those but thats for another thread), but the ease of cleaning etc far outweighs the noise.

Outflewtheweb · 16/07/2014 10:22

We have it in the living room and it's looked great for three years, weathering baby and toddler mayhem well.
