DS1 is 23 and works as a freelance camera grip in the tv industry. Basically he puts together the equipment that allows the camera to do all the moving shots in tv drama. He hasn't needed to drive up until now as he was at uni in London and worked there for his first year - spending a fortune on public transport. He has a contract to work on a programme back in the north east up until November and really needs transport into work as it is in the back end of beyond and he has to be there really early. He is having driving lessons but fears the cost of insurance. He has the cbt motorbike license so has decided to get a learner legal scooter or bike as cheaper to run and (presumably) insure. However, solely because he works in tv he is being given the most ridiculous quotes. 2,700 yesterday!!! Shock. Apparently a car would be more. They said it would be a tenth of the cost if he had a "normal" job. How can that matter? He is driving to the same place of work, parking his bike/car and driving back home again but he was an office worker at the same place, of the same age and with the same car/bike it would be so very much cheaper. He (we) are in despair at what to do. Any clues anyone?

The sad truth is that the insurance industry has sunk to the pits .The only answers here are [1] seek out a really good insurance broker [and that is not easy] try as many comparison sites as you can and ask other people in the industry

But, as you have said 'he works silly hours and has no time'

Insurance knows that's typical for his role, so therefore he is a higher statistical risk of an accident due to tiredness, late nights, driving in dark strange areas as opposed to someone working 9-5 in an office. That's why the price is so high.

My mum's insurance company tried to double her quote at one point as they classified her very part-time second job as a church organist as being in the "entertainment" industry. She's hardly Fat Boy Slim!!

SaucyJack that's hilarious!

It is stupid. And it doesn't take into account hobbies. Whoever it was that said their husband the mechanic was capable of modding his car so had sky high premiums - my husband works in an office for an online retailer and his insurance is dirt cheap. However he does all the maintenance on our cars himself and is also capable of modding a car if the urge took him.

In my catering days, as a chef my premiums were far higher than they are now (I work in finance these days), presumably because they expected lots of late nights and split shifts - however my last catering job was an 8-4 Tuesday to Saturday affair.

Tweak his job title FFS... lots of categories it could legitimately fall into.
