To think that Steven Fry should STFU?

So Steven Fry has taken it upon himself to call for the law to be toughened up to prevent false accusations of rape, partly based on the fact that Yewtree only achieved a 50% conviction rate.

We already know how incredibly difficult it is to report sexual abuse and how low the conviction rate is, we really don't need this highly respected man sticking his oar in and making it worse for rape victim.

Cheers for that, Steven.. :(

You just can't help but wonder why he is so worried about people coming forward on all these sex abuse allegations...

There is already a thread about this!?

Scarletohello · 14/07/2014 14:06

Is there already a thread? Oops! In my annoyance about this must have missed it. Will go check it out.

agree squid, I said same thing on the other thread.

why is he so worried i would have imagined he would be the type to come out in defense of people speking out...

Lottapianos · 14/07/2014 14:18

Oh he's such an utter plonker. I've never understood the National Treasure hysteria about him. He also thinks women don't like sex because they don't go cruising and cottaging like some gay men do. Twit.

David Mellor in the Daily Mail today again, absolutely busting a gut to downplay allegations that a former senior Tory MP was seen abusing children. Why all this energy going into minimising these allegations?

NotNewButNameChanged · 14/07/2014 14:30

Lotta if you knew someone who had been charged with rape, had their lives and those of their family totally destroyed, and then finally had it proved categorically that they didn't do it, you might understand why some people are so energetic about minimising allegations.

I am not an apologist and the full weight of the law should be visited upon anyone convicted of committing a sexual crime, whether on child, woman or man, and the jail sentence tougher than they are.

It's not black and white, I'm afraid and I wish I knew the answers.

Scarlet - it hasn't achieved a 50% conviction rate. Far from it. I posted the statistics on the other thread.

Lottapianos · 14/07/2014 15:43

NotNew, making up false allegations is an absolutely disgraceful thing. I feel terribly sorry for anyone who has been falsely accused and I can only imagine the impact it can have on someone's whole life.

However, all I have heard out of David Mellor in the last week or so is contact harping about how there was categorically no cover up and boo hooing about Tory MPs reputations. I'm sick and tired of the arse covering. I don't want people named who had nothing to do with any of this, but why is he trying to silence people? Why is he not jumping up and down to get this enquiry going, so that everyone can get to the bottom of what really did go on? He seems to feel that everyone should just look the other way which I find really repugnant.

SolidGoldBrass · 14/07/2014 15:50

OK, Steven Fry's got form for misogyny (and I have heard some unpleasant rumours about him in the past to the effect that he might well be worried, These are just rumours and I make no allegations as I have never met the man)

At the same time, if he was having a rant at a private dinner party, surely that's between him and his fellow guests and not news...

And the misogeny bit has also been addressed, links and all - another meeja misquote, it seems.

He is an awkward, intelligent, not particularly prepossessing, outspoken gay man with mental health issues and a HUGE backstory of troubles and eccentric behaviours - none of which he hides or excuses.

What is there not for meeja hacks to pounce upon, every now and then?

The other thread is lovely and long Smile
