To want to rant about how much I hate diabetes

So sick of it. Having to wake dd2 and feed her a biscuit as blood sugar was dropping then ten mins later it was too low so had to try and wake her again to feed her glucose tablets.

Its one of those nights where I just know that her cgm alarm will keep going off and its horrible having to try and get glucose into her when she's half asleep. Every time she plays in the garden on a warm day we have nights like this. Thought we had been clever and gave an extra snack before bed but she has dropped anyway.
Just wanted to rant because I really really REALLY hate diabetes

That's good advice re canula change elfin. W have the same pump as hedgehog's child and although ds generally changes every three days I notice that his bloods are higher on day three. Now he's going through puberty big style he runs out of insulin every other day, so that's a good prompt to change canula.

Completely understand and sympathise. Diabetes is a horrible disease. My dad died from complications developed as a result of diabetes that was diagnosed far too late. So yes I hate the disease that slowly killed my dad and took him away from us at just 67, which is nothing today.

I hope your daughter is ok and pray that some day there will be a cure.

My levels were all over the place yesterday Sad. I went for a run first thing, levels were sky high when I got back - what the heck?! Then I corrected and probably over corrected cos yesterday evening I was 1.9!

DLA wasn't around when we were younger Nancery but I've heard of people getting it for their kids. At the risk of sounding like a horrible person (i'm not I promise!) it niggles me a little as I really don't think that I have a disability. Just to clarify, it's not people getting the money that annoys me, just labelling it as a disability.

I think in our house there was a diabetes fairy who used to take care of everything - I had no idea the amount of effort and grief my illness must have caused my mum.

Dd got her pump end of June and they told us to change every two days which we have done religiously. It was changed after dds bath on sat night and then obviously got infected before the next change was due on Monday night. Very scary.

We get dla for dd but she also has other health issues (ehlers danlos syndrome and bowel problems) so they take that into account too. We did a very detailed seven day diary of all care needed which seemed to help as she has mobility issues as well as everything associated with diabetes.

After dds bath tonight her infection site 'popped' there's still a lump underneath but as I dried her a huge amount of pus came out, I'm assuming its good that her body is getting rid of it but the green colour was very alarming. Obviously a nasty bug in there Sad

paddy I've just been wondering how to word the DLA thing without offending but thankfully you've done it beautifully! Personally, I like to see it as a 'condition', as I think 'chronic illness' sounds bloody awful.

You were probably sky high as your liver shot out glucose as you ran, it's a short lived high though, hence the subsequent 1.9! Following my tears over my (lack of) weight loss I took the dog out rather than DH. 45 mins in I was 3.9, ended up needing three packs of dried apricots (small packs!) then buying two bananas. Hence, my walk would have burned off, probably, 2 thirds of one of the bananas and bugger all else. Great! (This weather is certainly making things dip more easily, not something I've really noticed before when ive been somewhere warm.)

Bramblesinforrin · 22/07/2014 19:58

And don't we love this warm weather - ds has been hypo on and off all afternoon. Just reduced his basal. Planning how t keep the spare I nsulin cool when we go camping soon (frio bag!).

Hedgehog, I'm sorry there's still a site issue - do you think it might need antibiotics? It could be sending her bloods of kilter.

Anotheronesoon · 22/07/2014 23:36

Hedgehog sorry you are having such a tough time. T1 diabetes is such a bugger. This weather doesn't help at all. Wishing you a better night tonight - hats off to all you mummies of little ones with diabetes you are amazing. X

My DS was diagnosed 13 years ago with Type 1 when he was 15; although he received superb treatment in Addenbrookes Hospital, it affected him deeply at the time and for the following 5 years, his focus was not on school work etc and I didn't have the heart to push him. Hot weather especially affected his levels. Although I'm very grateful for Diabetes UK, it was not ideal for him at 15 to be given a magazine full of adverts for impotence aids etc., and he & I still feel that the media can be very thoughtless when referring to diabetes eg 'If you do / don't do xyz, you risk getting serious diseases such as cancer and diabetes' ... You need a good sense of humour & resilience to get through it.

OP, hope your DD has had a better day
