AIBU?

So sick of rude customers!

We were closing up yesterday when a last minute shopper appeared. I politely let her know that we were closing and that the store would be open from 9am the next day.

She wasn't happy with this. She asked me what time we shut, checked her watch and asked to speak to a manager.

My manager let her in! She browsed for a few minutes and kept smugly smirking at me. Eventually she bought some bleach and as I was serving her she laughed that the customer is always right.
As I was closing the door (over 15 mins late) she was reversing her car out of her space smirking and laughing at me. As she drove off she was glaring at me!

I felt totally undermined and like the manager/owner had made a fool of me. The manger/owner treated and spoke to me like a child being told off in front of the customer.

I'm due back in work on Monday but I'm serious pissed off. I've been job hunting all night too.

Why are some people such twats? Aibu?

YANBU, alot of people seem to think that because you are standing behind a shop counter you deserve to be spoken to like you're shit on their shoe. It's even more annoying when someone above you undermines you.

I had this when I worked in retail. "Are you stupid? Can you even read?" Well yes, I can do so in 4 languages, and I have a degree, so I assume reading something in English isn't beyond me. Actual response I had to give... "I'm so sorry for the inconvenience..." and so on. Not a boast either, just that people think because you're behind a counter you must be completely stupid.

YES Pipbin, it definitely should be a national service kind of situation.

So you kept the door open because it was hot in the shop and now complain because someone came in? That boils down to the fact that it was your fault she came in!

An open door is a sign of being open or welcoming. Certainly not welcoming in your case. If you were too hot, why haven't you taken a fan to work or the establishment paid for one.

The boss has the door open. I have no choice in the matter and she doesn't provide fans.

We do have a large closed sign.

Anything that deals with other people can be a pain.

I work in HE and our "customers" can be rude buggers too. Angry

See OP, how dare you not work in conditions where you're overheating and uncomfortable! Shame on you, how was that poor woman meant to know when the shop closed. She would have had to make the effort to check the opening times herself. Not on.

I used to work in a bar where we were told not serve anybody who was crazy drunk. EVERY time I refused to serve somebody, the manager would get called over and he would tell me to serve him anyway!

Hope you're being paid for the extra time you were there.

Yep people think that because you work in a shop you must be stupid. On the contrary, if you couldn't read or write or do basics maths you wouldn't be able to do retail in the first place! Many sales assistant are Uni students or people who would love to do something else but can't.

One thing is certain though, I'd rather shovel shit than go back to it.

If you actually close at 5 not 5:30 why was your till still on and with cash in it?

If no customer comes in at 9:59 and 30 secs our shutters are down (when the air con is broken the fans are on)

If customers are still in at that time the shutters go part way down and no new customers are allowed in

As soon as the last customer have paid the till is off and cashing up/ reports etc are done

We don't get paid for staying past 10pm. Absolutely hate working with one of my colleagues who insists that is someone is filling up and will be doing so until gone 10pm then anyone else who turns up past 10pm for store goods should be allowed in... We can be up to 30 mins late out but it's apparently ok as she doesn't mind staying late :-/

Yes, Rhine.

When I worked in shops, I was starting my PhD and then just out of it. At the same time, we had MSc students and Uni students working there too.
Not many "school leavers".

I had one MSc student who worked in a supermarket (she was clever too) and she saved enough to go on a trip to Japan.

Eitherway your manager soundstage like a prick, no wonder there's loads of piss heads about that cannot even stand up.

I always did wonder if pubs actually follow the rules of not serving someone who is clearly intoxicated.

Door open or not, the big closed sign should give it away really...

About 6 months. I just feel embarrassed.

We're not allowed on it until we have been here for 6 months.

It's even more ridiculous that the customer made such a fuss when there is a Spar next door (unless she'd already been in there and they hadn't got any bleach)

Yanbu.

I worked in retail. Large well known chain. We didn't let people in during the last 10 minutes before closing. Ever.

Telling people they couldn't come in was often the highlight of my long and usually shitty day. I'm petty like that.

We once had a woman duck in under the shutter as it was being closed. It was a couple of minutes after closing, but she was determined to see if we had the particular item she wanted. she didn't want to buy it there and then, she just wanted to see if we had it and our word that we did was not good enough. There is always one, but the policy of the company that i am working for currently is that we serve everyone until the dot of closing time.

Nothing makes you loath humanity, or be more polite to retail staff than having worked in retail.

You are more often than not treated like shit by your employer and then talked to like shit by the customers. Very few people ever work in retail because they want to, they do it because its a job. One shop I worked in every single member of staff had a degree. They all worked there to make ends meet.

Bursarymum · 12/07/2014 13:53

You were both unreasonable IMO. I hate retailers who care so little about customer service that all they think about is what time they are closing and refuse to be flexible within reason.

Otoh she was horrible.

Rabbitcar · 12/07/2014 14:09

It's interesting. I hope I'm unfailingly polite to those who work in retail (which is as it should be of course), but am staggered how rude and unhelpful many staff are in return. I must go to the wrong shops.
