Mine is not terribly exciting but it seems only polite to make a contribution Grin

I live a few doors down from the house where I was born, very close to the village church. I grew up listening to the sound of the bells. When I moved back I was pleased to hear their familiar chimes again, until I discovered that the church had long been derelict and the clock stopped years ago.

Still, I continued to hear the bells nearly every night, until the church was finally demolished last year.

there is probably a completely rational explanation for what I was actually hearing but tonight I am living in the land of woo and whimsy

Anymore for anymore?

I've NC as the info may well out me (naice ham, penguin bollards, mexican holiday homes).

I grew up in an old farm house. It is about 400 years old and originally built as one long house but was split into two in about 1800 or so.
On a Sunday mornings when I was about 4 I would go into my parents bedroom and get into bed with them.
This is the story my mum tells: One morning I went into my parents bedroom. As I climbed into bed I asked my mum who the lady on the landing was. Mum got out of bed to look, but there was no one there. It was the 70s, in the country and it sounds like a cliche, but we didn't lock our doors (I don't think I even owned a key to the house). My folks wondered if it was a friend who had come into the house looking for them. Mum asked me to describe the woman and I said that she had a long black dress and a cloth over her head with a white apron on. Further question showed that I had seen a nun. I had no idea what a nun was, we lived far out in the sticks and I'd never seen the Sound of Music.
Mum did some research and it turned out that for a time our house had been a nunnery. She talked to the lady who lived next door who said that they had heard movements but not seen anything. The upstairs has one long landing with the rooms going off it. It used to run the full length of the building until it was split up and the corridor just bricked up to split the house. Next door would hear someone walking along the landing and right through the bricked up opening into our house.

Lots of things used to go missing, but would appear back if you asked for them. But the most annoying thing was that the screws would come out of my glasses. I would put them on the side in the bathroom while I was in the bath. I'd go to put them back on and find that the screws that hold the arms on and the ones that hold the lenses in would be neatly lined up in front of my glasses.

Not so scary now I mention write it, but it used to scare me as a kid.

Another thing was the house over the road. It is a big old gothic manor house. On the front of it is a gable end was a small window (the picture isn't that house but similar). No one ever lived in the house for very long. One family that lived there had a son the same age as me and I would play with him. The attic, with the small window, was up a set of stairs in the house. In the wall at the end of the attic was a stone set into the wall. On it was carved the names off all the people buried in the field behind the house. The house had been a secret quaker meeting house and they hadn't been permitted to bury their dead in the church yard. In the field behind the house was a blank gravestone with a hole in it. (The people who live in the house now have moved the gravestone).
One day we were having dinner when I noticed a flame in the attic window. Mum went over to tell them, but when they went up there there was no flame. I also saw a crow on the inside of that window but it wasn't there when we went to investigate.

This all seems rather bland now in the telling.

Sorry for the multiple posts. There is clearly a deus ex machina too!

WalkWithTheLonelyOnes · 10/07/2014 22:30

ghost did you by anychance NC? Uour post wasn't clear Grin

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 10/07/2014 22:32

I'm loving these.

My Mum grew up in an old house on the edge of Portsmouth. Every time someone was ill, a worried looking lady would appear on the stairs apparently.

Never had anything woo happen to me though. Even when I visited that house as a child. I liked the feel of it.

MrsWinnibago · 10/07/2014 22:37

Lulu What did the woman look like? Shock

Ghostly that's a stunning house! Was it nice to live there or scary due to footsteps?

RumPunch · 10/07/2014 22:41

I love these threads! But why always at night time? I'm a wimp!

GhostInMyHouse · 10/07/2014 22:53

MrsWinnibago I didn't live in that house! That is one like the one over the road.

The house I grew up in was a similar age. TBH it was always scary. The house would settle at night and there was always a lot of noise I would always sleep with the radio on and my folks would leave the landing light on all night long, and still do. The power there is fairly flaky so there is a box of matches and candles on the wall of the landing.

When my dad had died after a long and painful illness, 2 days later I was in the kitchen making the tea. The phone rang in the hall so I went to answer it still with a spoon in my hand..said hello and the voice I heard nxt made me shudder..I dropped the spoon and slid down the wall thinking I was going to faint..I was saying "dad is that you". Now as a grown woman, I know the sound of my dads voice. .and it was definitely him. Sounds ridiculous I know. .but I swear. Nxt minute im crying and sitting on the floor wondering what the hell had just happened. Talking to my sister that night she had also had an experiencethat had left her crying and shaking. .her patio door has swung open and she had heard her name being said in the distance..at exactly the same time my phone had rung.

Also my mum was a nurse in a hospital run by nuns..one night she observed a nun in a grey habit going from bed to bed, quietly holding their hands and saying a prayer. She mentioned it to the sister later on and asked who she was as the habit was different from the other nuns..oh you've met sister "so and so then". She died many years ago and still likes to walk the wards tending to those who need her" my mum (who is a complete sceptic) was very startled by this as definitely she had seen this nun..and the more thought she gave it, remembered it was as tho she glided between the beds. My mum swears she saw her..and she definitely is not afraid of death now.

Clicked on this thread just before going to bed and now wondering if that was such a good idea.

I liked the way "Goatman" was written, not sophisticated at all, just one event after another, good voice, conversational. Genuinely creepy. God, it's the English teacher kicking in. :o

Though I have to say, why do teenagers go camping in the woods? Don't they watch films?

LondonRocks · 11/07/2014 00:11

Marking place. Keep them coming! I'll post some later

Marking place Grin

ValerieTheVodkaFairy · 11/07/2014 11:12

Also place marking :)

It quite possible I dreamed this but still....last night my DSs bedroom door opened and I could see him standing in the doorway looking at me in bed. It was dark in his room so I could only see his outline. I got out of bed and turned on my light, his door was still open but he was in bed fast asleep....I think I need to stop reading this thread.

angelos02 · 11/07/2014 12:08

I was once upstairs in a smallish house, walked across the landing and saw DH to my left making the bed in our main bedroom. I walked downstairs and he was sat in the lounge reading the paper. I gasped and he asked what was wrong. I just couldn't explain it. It was like a time-slip or something. In my entire life, nothing else like this has happened before or since and I remember it so vividly.

FlappityFlap · 11/07/2014 12:08

Name changed to share a photo. I've uploaded it to my photos. Can anybody see it? Was taken in my bedroom window last November. Scared the crap out of me!

FlappityFlap · 11/07/2014 12:10

Does this week? I'm so bad with technology!

TwosaCrowd · 11/07/2014 12:15

Just a black picture flappity?

FlappityFlap · 11/07/2014 12:16

There's a face. You may need to tilt your screen.

FlappityFlap · 11/07/2014 12:16

It's condensation though. Definitely. Right?

frizzcat · 11/07/2014 12:16

Just expanded the image on my phone - is that a face flappity?

TwosaCrowd · 11/07/2014 12:18

I can't see anything - must be my screen.

FlappityFlap · 11/07/2014 12:18

Looks like it. Scared myself and my daughter! It's condensation though, and that's what I'm sticking with!

frizzcat · 11/07/2014 12:21

Have any if you seen this - it was caught on a security camera inside a person's home. They actually caught a ghost in camera, although could be a trick of the light. I also solemly swear that this isn't one of those shitty videos where a horrible scary face jumps up..

ItsAliveItsElectric · 11/07/2014 12:22

Flappity that is seriously freaky! Was that taken from inside your bedroom so the face is looking in?
