Mine is not terribly exciting but it seems only polite to make a contribution Grin

I live a few doors down from the house where I was born, very close to the village church. I grew up listening to the sound of the bells. When I moved back I was pleased to hear their familiar chimes again, until I discovered that the church had long been derelict and the clock stopped years ago.

Still, I continued to hear the bells nearly every night, until the church was finally demolished last year.

there is probably a completely rational explanation for what I was actually hearing but tonight I am living in the land of woo and whimsy

Anymore for anymore?

I love these stories but I shouldn't read them when I'm home alone

winkywinkola · 16/07/2014 14:13

Eeeeeee, more please!

Ok, I wasn't going to share this one because a lot of people who know me will identify it and also because it sounds insane but I promise it is true.

When I was 18 I was lucky enough to rent a manor house with a little annex on the back. The house was boarded up except for the bit where we lived. at the back, there was an internal door into the main house.

Because of the fact it was a high value property that was in need of repairs and had been a target for break ins I was lucky enough to pay "peppercorn rent" in exchange for watching the property.

I lived there with a friend and my then partner and my 2 dogs.

I was sitting in my housemates room on the bed together and we both watched a white smoke like object glide across the room, and then ball up at the window. We looked a little confused and then we realised that the other had seen it as well and it hadn't just been in our heads.

In my room there was a large double bed, and often, at night... a man would be seen standing at the bottom of my bed with his arms folded. He would just stare, it was very dark there (no street lights closeby) but you could clearly see his form at the bottom of the bed. Me and my partner both saw him.

My partner also often tried to stroke dogs that were not there if it was dark, once he said "Hey lil dogsname" and I said... "Erm the dog is over here".

My mum would visit pretty often and her partner once saw the ghost dog.

The man at the bottom of the bed appeared to wear a uniform, like a war uniform. We heard banging from inside the main house, against the internal door. Nobody slept that night.

We went into the main house, following a break in. The house had remained untouched for years and years, huge bedrooms with peeling wallpaper and piles of stuff. I was strangely drawn to a box on top of a wardrobe. I opened it to find a medics uniform from the war (the same uniform that the man wore). It also had a photo of him in the box and a photo of 2 dogs that had "alpha and beta" written on the back.

I went to the graveyard the next day and found the mans grave and as was traditional for large families who had their own plots, alpha and beta also had a grave stone there.

I asked my landlady about this man, and it was her grandad. He had died in bed in the room I had been sleeping in some years before.

Hedgehogparty · 16/07/2014 17:25

Mine is more strange than spooky.
I work in a small modern office detached and standing in its own grounds.
I'm often the first one in and have to unlock the door in the morning.
Some years back, I arrived at work, unlocked the door as usual and went into the kitchen to put the kettle on.

In the kitchen we had a jug water filter on the shelf and I watched as water started to drop through the filter into the jug below. It looked like it had just been filled up from the tap. I hadn't moved it at all.
There was no one else in the building.

There may be an explanation but I still can't think of one.

EvenBetter · 16/07/2014 17:35

When I was a teenager my mum told me she'd seen a very very tall person all in white standing by her bed, she was terrified and hid under the covers all night. Then she said it must've been a side effect of her medication and I thought nothing more of it.
I later found out she'd had the house exorcised!

We moved house and she recently admitted that she has seen the same figure, standing by her bed in our new house too. Fuck sake!

ItsAliveItsElectric · 16/07/2014 18:12

A couple from me......

My brother who's in the army did his basic training at some very old barracks. One night he woke up to see a soldier wearing an old uniform and an old fashioned gas mask standing at the foot of his bed! He was only 16 and said he just shut his eyes tightly and when he dared to look again the soldier had vanished.

My grandad passed away when I was 14. About a month after he died my mum had a very vivid dream about him. He was standing in my nana's house looking sad. The corner of the room where his chair used to be was empty and he went to the fireplace and hit it In anger. The next day she went to visit my nana and his old chair and the fireplace were being taken out by some removal firm!
Lastly, we used to live in an old upstairs flat that was built around 1900. When I was washing up I had a feeling like someone was watching me from the doorway. It made me feel really uneasy. When my son was born he often would follow something around the room, before he could talk that is. When he started talking he often said "lady" and pointed to the doorway. Occasionally his noisy toys would start going off suddenly in his room (could be faulty batteries but all if them? ). Once my dh came home from night shift and distinctly heard a loud "sshhh!" . He assumed it was me shushing him after getting ds off to sleep and was about to apologise when he got in our room but I was fast asleep. I also used to find hairpins, the old fashioned brown ones, in odd places like the middle of the floor, in my knicker drawer etc. I've never bought a pack of hairpins in my life! We mentioned it to our landlady and she said an old woman lived there before us, a long term tenant, and moved to a nursing home just before she died.

ProfYaffle · 16/07/2014 19:52

phantom I remember that story, they got a vicar or a medium or someone to come in and get rid of the old man ghost in the kitchen. The medium said 'oh no, I can't get rid of him, he's the only thing keeping the really bad spirit outside!'

ScarlettDragon · 16/07/2014 21:17

Thought of another one, that is weird. About 14 years ago DH and I moved into a tiny terraced house that was around 100 years old (I think). One evening I was in the bathroom which was at the top of stairs, DH downstairs in the living room watching TV. No one else in the house. I lifted my right arm to close the bathroom window, when I felt a very heavy strong hand land on my right shoulder. It was a very prominent sharp heavy feeling. I laughed and twirled round thinking DH had crept up behind me to scare me. Only he wasn't there. Ran to the bathroom door thinking he was hiding on the landing, not there. Shouted him very freaked out by now, when he came out the living room looking a bit bewildered. Totally freaked out and started crying hysterically, (to be fair I was only 21). There was no way he could have gotten back down to the living room that fast.

DH tried to explain it away saying it was probably a muscle in my shoulder tensing as I raised my arm, which I suppose is plausible. But I really felt a hand on my shoulder ,could feel the heavy fingers on my neck as it touched me. I couldn't stay there after that I was to scared, we moved out soon after.

Ooo weird precious.

I'm still logging in just to read this thread.

phantomnamechanger · 16/07/2014 23:36

yes profyaffle that's the one.
Hair standing on end again now !

NutellaLawson · 17/07/2014 07:40

scarletydragon your do may be right. Even before i got to his explanation I thought the same. Some years ago I went to plug in the TV at my MIL house which was notorious for dodgy wiring. As I did so I felt a heavy hand pull me. It felt like a person, but it was the muscle tensing from the current. Felt scary and very realistically like someone else, though.

BigbyWolf · 17/07/2014 14:51

Great thread! I have no spooky stories to tell, just shamelessly bumping because I want to read more!

fluffyraggies · 17/07/2014 15:31

Can i tell another one? It's DHs.

In his late teens he was alone in his parents house for 2 weeks as his parents had gone away. Weeks earlier he had lost/misplaced his heavy gold necklace.

Standing in the kitchen one afternoon making a sandwich - out of the corner of his eye he saw a 'shadow' pass the kitchen door as if someone had walked down the hall. No one in the house with him. Internal hall so no windows to give a trick of the light. His parent's parrot who lived in a big cage near the door saw something too because he went all tall and thin and wide eyed, like they do, and was cocking his head to see into the hall.

DH paused in his sandwich making. Then carried on. When he crossed the kitchen a few minutes later he spotted his necklace which had been missing for weeks. It had appeared in the middle of an otherwise clear work top. All coiled round flat, like a snake.

??

LoisEinhorn · 17/07/2014 16:08

Not spooky but definitely woo.
There's a video on FB that shows a mouse caught in a mousetrap. Very sad and cruel.
At the moment the mouse finally dies and stops moving an orb appears by its head and shoots upward.

MrsCosmopilite · 17/07/2014 16:38

I have another which has just come back to me after seeing an old friend recently.

She was the youngest of 7 kids and the only female under 20 living at home of the family. She had her own bedroom (brothers shared) and a lock on the door because they'd been tormenting her a bit by coming in and hiding her underwear etc. (typical silly teenage boys).

We were going out to a party and I'd gone to her house to get ready, so we could go together. I was staying overnight at hers and she mentioned that we when we went shopping the next day we needed to get a spare key cut for her room as she had the only one and was worried about locking herself out.
We got all rigged up, then did a quick hair check. As we were going out, she threw her hairbrush onto the bed, and locked the door behind her.

When we got back around 11pm, the hairbrush was on her dressing table.

AuntBeru · 17/07/2014 17:09

I'm being all brave and reading these because dh happens to be home today :D

Does anyone remember one from a previous thread, a poster talked about living in a 2nd floor flat I think, that there was only one door into. She was home alone one night nursing the baby, when she heard someone in the flat, someone who rushed towards the room she was in. She managed to get to the room door, shut it and bolt it, and whoever it was slammed into the door. She called her oh and the police and when they got there, there was no one there and the front door was still locked....that one still freaks me out!

WalkWithTheLonelyOnes · 17/07/2014 17:15

aunt OMG I remember that! I was shitting myself reading it.

Couldn't the 999 operator hear someone laughing in the house?

Aw.I missed a spooky Friday night thread. Ill tell you what ive posted before. 22yrs ago was living in an ordinary semi with my 2 boys 1 and 3.Had been burgled a few months earlier so was nervy.I often heard running about upstairs as did others,my babysitter used to check dc's adn they were fast asleep.

One night i was seeing out a friend and the running noise came from upstairs,he looked over my shoulder and said "whats that" i explained i often heard it and he seemed reluctant to leave me.

I went to bed and could hear all sorts of banging downstairs so was led awake holding my breath.Ds 3 then runs in and snuggles up with me.Everytime this noise occurrs he moves closer.Realising this was not my imagination i called 999 and the operator told me he was sending a van full of police,i was crying so he offered to stay on the line.

The phone suddenly went dead and then a mans voiced laughed. Hysterical i was screaming downm the phone when the op came back on,he asked if i had a downstairs phone and i said i did,he advised me to get against the door until the police arrived,he sadi he had heard a man laugh too.I was literally beside myself, the baby was asleep in next room and i was torn betwee getting him and opening the door as i had ds1 with me.

The police arrived and it took them a bout 20mins to persuade me to open the door, they refused to break it down. I ran down with a bseball bat (id been burgled remember)and let them in. There was no sign of any break in and the phone had not been tampered with.

I went to my Mums for the night with ds's. Things continued to happen there for many years but never that bad,i got remarried so was alittle less scary with dh around.

One night we came in from a bbq at around midnight. The ds's were at my mujms and we went staright to sleep (bit drunk) The following morning the wardrobes in the ds's room were in the middle of the room and were twisted and broken. My neighbour later complained to me about the terrible banging that had been coming from the ds's room at around 2am!!!!!"

Whereisegg · 17/07/2014 17:45

Walk, I remember reading that, shit me right up Grin

AuntBeru · 17/07/2014 18:03

I haven't read that one before Walk, it is equally terrifying!

I may be blending 2 stories here but I think in the one I mentioned, the op had to continue living there for a few months. Later, she researched the address and uncovered that a man had murdered his wife and child there in the 1900s. That just came back to me, I may be confusing stories though!

SignYourName · 17/07/2014 18:14

My friend's dad - the most down to earth man you'd ever meet - went back to work after a holiday abroad. This was pre-internet and pre-mobiles. The first person he saw was a colleague heading the other way, let's call him Bill. My friend's dad greeted Bill who lifted his hand in acknowledgement but didn't stop or speak. My friend's dad carried on into his office and mentioned to the others there that he'd seen Bill leaving but he hadn't stopped, was everything alright? Had Bill had bad news? The other colleagues went white.

Bill had died unexpectedly while my friend's dad was on holiday...

Mrsfrumble · 17/07/2014 20:46

I remember the other one too AuntBeru. Definitely two separate stories, both terrifying.

Two others that I remember from previous threads:

One was written by a nanny (from what I recall) who had taken her young charge to a park. The little girl refused to walk to a particular area of the park because of "the lady in the bushes". The nanny couldn't see anyone, but a few days later heard that the police had found the body of a female murder victim in the very same bushes, and the body had probably been there when they were. Eek!

Another one that shook me was when a poster's visiting mum had taken her baby upstairs to the nursery to change her nappy. A few minutes later, the mum came back looking pale and shaken without having changed the baby. She confessed that as she was laying her granddaughter on the changing table she'd glanced into the cot and seen another baby who looked cold and dead.

MrsWinnibago · 17/07/2014 20:49

MrsFrumble and what kind of Mother would tell their daughter that! My God!
