Has anyone taken a young baby camping? Is it feasible, practical, or more hassle than it's worth? He is bottle-fed, so would need to sterilize bottles etc. Btw, this would be Hampshire in August Smile

I'm thinking about taking our youngest camping for the first time this year, she'll be 12 months in April, so looking to go around June. Seems people have mixed opinions on whether or not it's a good idea...Hopefully it won't be too much of a nightmare!

I have camped twice in the last 15 years so not hardcore. The second time was with my 6-month baby. It was easy and fun, and my 2-year-old loved it. I was bf though... Can you use ready made formula?

BoredAdminGirl · 25/02/2015 14:59

I really pity the rest of the field if you do.

MrsMook · 25/02/2015 15:00

I took my 2 year old, 15 week old on Brownie camp. It was fine! The awkward bit was the catering for 15 between feeds!

I used my cloth nappies and stored them in wetbags as it was easier than disposing of disposables.

ghostyslovesheep · 25/02/2015 15:10

yeah it's doable - probably easier than with a toddler - milton, cartons of milk, grobag and warm PJ's x

BabyDubsEverywhere · 25/02/2015 15:21

We took 8 week old DD camping (along with the other three DC)

She was fine, the toddler on the other hand...

Droflove · 25/02/2015 15:34

Can't imagine it would be very comfortable if baby is roaring in the night but no reason why not. I used cold sterilisation when we brought our 9 mth old to Cuba. Works great. Tesco do tablets even cheaper than Milton. I would bring a bouncer to put baby in safely while sitting around.

Woodifer · 25/02/2015 15:36

We went in camper van with DD when she was 4 months. Breastfed but having expressed bottles for when it was my turn to go cycling :)

Anyway used Milton tablets (as don't have risk of spilling/leaking of bottles) and used a washing up bowl, with a pre drawn line for the right amount if water.

I took DS1 when he was 9 months and it was a nightmare - he was crawling and could crawl across the site faster than a bleedin speeding bullet so I couldn't sit and have a nice relax in a picnic chair at any point during the day and at night the people in surrounding tents could hear every wail and cry which put me on edge as well.

And it was cold, we'd taken his travel cot but he ended up in my sleeping bag and his weight on a thin camping mat gave me terrible backache.

But I am not really a fan of camping full stop so probably not an objective viewpoint!

maninawomansworld · 25/02/2015 17:59

If you want to do it then do it.
Personally I'd rather carve my own corneas out with a fork than take a small child camping but that's just me.

winewolfhowls · 25/02/2015 18:55

We have been to sites where they have a shared self catering kitchen you couldfind one of those sites for your sterilising and then have the bottles ready of all night? (Disclaimer, i bf so no idea if you can pre prepare)

Also you could take those ready mixed cartons

Metalguru · 25/02/2015 19:30

I would do it, it's no more stressful than any other holiday with a baby IME

LinesThatICouldntChange · 25/02/2015 19:54

Yes, many years ago we camped with 3 under-5s, youngest being 4 months. He was breastfed and it was all quite straightforward

toddlewaddleflipflop · 25/02/2015 20:27

Definition possible. My tip is to buy fleecy pyjamas now, while they are still in the shops, not wait for summer. Have fun!

QuintessentiallyInShade · 25/02/2015 20:28

Careful how you dispose of the sterlizing liquid when you are done, if you are in nature....

BohemianRaptor · 25/02/2015 20:44

I would wait and see what kind of baby you get first. A contented baby would be a completely different experience to a refluxy, colicky, screams 16 hours a day nightmare like mine was and the baby in the tent next to us last year.

Heleng1982 · 25/02/2015 21:29

we went camping with our 4 year old when he was 8 weeks old. I was dreading it, but it was great no problems at all he even started sleeping through the night that weekend. sterilising bottles was so much easier than I expected. Good luckSmile

Is there really a need to open a thread from last year? It's a bit confusing to follow, I doubt the original poster needs advice now.
