To complain about being squawked at?

Jenni2legs · 08/07/2014 12:09

I was walking into work this morning and a branded (with a company logo) white van got about a foot behind me and the bloke in the passenger side leaned out and just screeched at me...What do you do with that? I don't get it... I jumped out of my skin, but I don't know if it's something to complain about or just laugh off?

Screeched or squawked what at you? Confused
He sounds a little unhinged tbh.

EarthWindFire · 08/07/2014 12:15
Confused
VenusDeWillendorf · 08/07/2014 12:15

Ring the company up and let them know their employees are harassing women. Ask to speak to the company director.
Threaten to put it up on fb and social media.

This kind of thing is unacceptable.

Btw, from the thread title, I thought you meant he had some kind of attack parrot, and had it squalk at you Grin

Hope you're OK Jenni.

Jenni2legs · 08/07/2014 12:17

Hi Puppy, it wasn't a word - it was a noise - it sounded like a really loud shriek, I can't really describe it.

I don't know if a challenge was put on, possibly in "Nuts", or "Loaded", because this seems to happening all over the country.

Dick and Dom used to do similar challenges, but at least their demographic are the

Whatamessiamin · 08/07/2014 12:18

It happens to me all the time don't worry about it lol

hiddenhome · 08/07/2014 12:18

Report to their company. It's totally unacceptable behaviour.

Bowlersarm · 08/07/2014 12:20

I agree with Birds, if you don't report he'll just keep doing it to other women. Although it sounds so innocuous, it really isn't, it's designed to cause upset and to shock.

Jenni2legs · 08/07/2014 12:20

It did sound bird-like Shock
I am OK, just a bit unsure - as you can see I can barely describe what happened (no parrots were involved). If it was a wolf whistle I would be ringing now, but I feel a bit 'what was this?'

hiddenhome · 08/07/2014 12:24

Please report regardless of what noise it was. It could really upset people who are nervous, frightened or unwell in some way Sad

I live on my nerves and somebody once shouted at me as I crossed the road at traffic lights. It made me feel panicky and scared and stopped me from going out to the takeaway from then on.

Jenni2legs · 08/07/2014 12:26

I've complained - thank you Mumsnetters xx

DamnIWishIWasYourLover · 08/07/2014 12:59

What did the company say when you complained?

I'd have complained too

PinkHamster · 08/07/2014 13:01

He sounds like a right charmer.

Jenni2legs · 08/07/2014 13:48

I sent an email, was a bit worried (as it's just a little local firm and the number is a mobile) that 'he' would answer.

OP posts:
Bowlersarm · 08/07/2014 13:50

You've done the right thing.

PiperRose · 08/07/2014 13:50

Would people seriously report being wolf-whistled at?

Bowlersarm · 08/07/2014 13:52

No I wouldn't personally report a wolf whistle.

Shrieking is a bit more menacing, I think.

PiperRose · 08/07/2014 13:56

Bowlers that exactly what I was thinking. This squawking should be reported.

Ilovehamabeads · 08/07/2014 13:58

A guy in a van did this to my 9yr old DD recently. Just screeched at her as they went past. She got such a fright she actually jumped into the road which they thought was hysterically funny. Absolute dickheads. I've got the rage again now just remembering it Angry
I'm glad you reported it.

AdamLambsbreath · 08/07/2014 14:03

Well done for reporting, that took a bit of nerve I bet Smile

This kind of thing is intimidation. Men choose women on their own to scare, because we're the easiest targets and the least likely to retaliate.

It happens to me all the time too. The other day I was out on a run, doing some fairly deep thinking about some knotty family relationship issues, when some arsewipe leaned out of his van and screamed at me. Just a massive screech. It completely destroyed my chain of thought and making me cross for the next ten minutes.

Should have got the company name . . .

AdamLambsbreath · 08/07/2014 14:04

That's 'made' me cross, sorry. Tense fail.

AdamLambsbreath · 08/07/2014 14:05

What an utter knobend, hamabeads Angry

I've had guys do this to me when I'm cycling on busy roads. Because it would be hilarious if I flinched and was hit by a car.

passmethewineplease · 08/07/2014 14:06

Yanbu.

It's not OK to do this to anyone.

Fortunately these dick heads don't think and their works number is plastered all over their vehicle. Grin

Clever bunch.

Good.

It isn't funny. It's isn't even meant to be funny (to the squawkee anyway). It's meant to intimidate. It's utterly twattish.
