To serve DH the crappy fish for tea and buy myself a nice one??

DH has asked for fish and chips for tea - I do the cooking in the house normally - and no problems with that. I make my own chips normally. Last time we went shopping, he insisted we buy some of the supermarket fish portions in breadcrumbs. I went along with it (wasn't paying attention) and then have come to the decision when it came to eating them that I don't really like them anyway (and have kept putting off eating them).

I've said if we are having fish and chips for tea, I'm going to nip to the chippy at the end of the road for a portion of curry sauce (love to dip my chips!) Would it be unreasonable for me to buy myself a lovely, fresh, battered fish and serve him the bread crumbed ones? He seems to think so - but he doesn't want a fish shop fish, he wants me to eat the freezer ones!

See! Expensive ones are about £1 each so my 70p wasn't too far off Grin

I think it is up to you OP what you want to eat, but maybe you should both discuss what goes in your supermarket trolley before you go through the. checkout, especially if you both have a limited budget to spend.

If this is all you disagree about in your rece married life then you should have a long and happy one

FraidyCat · 07/07/2014 19:00

A bit off-topic, but my parents fancied fish and chips when they were visiting the UK, not something we usually eat at home. At Waitrose I bought frozen "breaded cod" with a picture of, well, a breaded cod on the packaging. It turned out to be a giant fishcake in the shape of a fish. I examined the packaging very closely afterwards and nowhere did it give a clue that the contents were fishcake and not actual fish.

I hit the post key by accident before I had finished writing. Blush

That should say, if this is all you both disagree about in your married life then you should have a long and happy marriage. If only life was like that all the time. Grin

You have made me smile though, because my inner voice is saying, wait until you've been married a bit longer then the real fun will begin. Wink

Yanbu let him eat the crap fish, mabey get some higher end supermarket ones for you, still cheaper than the chippy.

DoJo · 07/07/2014 19:07

Oh god, I don't even care which of you eats which fish now, so desperate am I for fish and chips from our local chippy for dinner. I was going to have a SALAD! You bastards...Grin

ICanSeeTheSun · 07/07/2014 19:10

Freezer fish is disgusting, I don't think I have ever had a nice piece of fish from a box.

WyldChyld · 07/07/2014 19:13

Sorry DoJo! It was really bloody delicious as well!

FraidyCat - that's disgraceful! I'd have been fuming! Fish cake is not fish (although is sometimes delicious)

Speed - I hope you're right! I'm steering him more and more away from processed so that should solve that argument in future - good job he loves my home cooking.

It's ok WyldChyld - I have convinced Mr DoJo that we really should test out our local chippy, so you've actually done me a favour! All's well that ends well for everyone having fish and chips for tea tonight... Grin

For god's hake, you should both stop carping on.

MinesAPintOfTea · 07/07/2014 20:17

We get a large portion and halve it. Still more fish than you get from a box and no-one feels sick from overeating.

SaucyJack · 07/07/2014 20:17

Fishing for laughs there Holy....

HolyDrinker · 07/07/2014 20:28

Dolphinately. Cod do batter though, I know.

WyrdByrd · 07/07/2014 20:33

Get your curry sauce & smother your supermarket fish in it.

If your trying to save money just use what's in the freezer. The sooner you eat it the sooner it's gone.

If you've got a deep fryer, I'd recommend buying plain, frozen white fish fillets and battering them yourself. Easy, cheap & no compromise of taste.

Posted too late!

I've only just started doing my own - so much nicer.

OorWullie · 07/07/2014 20:49

YABVVU to start a thread involving chip shop curry sauce when my nearest chippy is 20 minutes drive away in another town.

Time to change your tuna then.

ILovedYouYesterday · 07/07/2014 22:17

Slight derail but does anyone else remember a time when oven fish were actually nice? My Granny used to cook them, back when they were one of the few convenience foods available, and I remember them being lovely.

These days, they are minging.

Lidl do gorgeous hake fillets :)
