To eat "out of date" food

For most food if it passes the sniff test and tastes OK its generally OK. However I am wary of some foods being out of date like Chicken.

Am I unreasonable to ignore dates on supermaket food and eat slightly out of date food?

I play fast and loose with my digestive health.

Well, not really, but I implement the sniff test.

I'm always a bit wary of natural yoghurt and feta cheese though as they both have that sharp smell naturally.

I did bin some mince the other day. Was a bit annoyed as DH (who is in charge of cooking and shopping) just forgot to put it in the freezer. Not as annoying as the time a whole salmon was left out though!

I think those best before dates have meant that a lot of people have just lost the knowledge and ability to tell, by themselves, when meat and fish has gone off. Our mothers and grandmothers would have known by the look and smell of a chicken or a piece of salmon if it was fit to use. Nowadays we've got so used to being given a cut off date we know longer follow our eyes and noses and as a result are probably throwing lots of good food out.

I made it! Despite my irresponsible attitude towards best before dates, the cheese sauce hasn't killed me, so to celebrate I had some of the milk on my bran flakes this morning! Almost tempted to see how long I can keep using this milk - it's a race to see which of us last longest...

Yanbu in Vietnam a lot of eople buy from markets and fruit, veg and meat don't have a best brefore label.

I buy everything fresh from local grocers and butchers. They don't come with use by dates on them.

If it looks and smells fine, it is fine.

I buy fruit and veg and fresh meat at the market - that does not have a use by or best before date...

If it is good to eat I eat it, if not I dont... (or if its veg I make it to soup) - (fruit I make it to smoothy)

Fruit and veg I wouldn't even look at a date, though if either have been languishing in a bowl of fridge then they are not going to do as much good as they would fresh, though equally they are not going to do you any harm.

Other things I wouldn't eat past date or if I was unsure when they were opened, but then I have HUGE food issues, I only eat what I have prepared myself, so I don't care what anyone else does Grin

I do just think its important to consider who you feed the past use by food to - young children, elderly or possibly pregnant women. Theres food weve eaten past use by that i wouldnt necessarily feed to my 2 yr old. As d&v when she wont stand still is not pleasant!
Ive also only had food poisoning when out.
Yesterday a snack bar had out all the bagettes on the counter including chicken ones it was a very hot day. I chose to not have one that had been sat out.
Also milk and yoghurt says use within 3 days which we never do.
