to sleep in a nappy?

Have leaked through two night-time pads & super plus tampon in a 7 hr sleep. Feel crap, won't be going anywhere today. So what to do? Sleep on a pile of towels? Set the alarm clock every 3 hours? Wear a nappy over the top of everything? What do you do?

If you are not TTC then have the Mirena Coil....no bleeding at all after a settling down month or two. But get checked out first.

Otherwise taking the pill back-to-back for 3 months at a time reduces the problem.

NB Ignore my advice as I am not a doctor and you should not take medical advice on the internet. But ask about it when you see your GP!

Ilovehamabeads · 06/07/2014 13:08

I didn't know ibruprofen lightens flow. Is that really true? I also suffer alternate months like this but not quite to the same extent. Definitely can't leave the house on day 2 other than a mad dash on the school run. It's so draining too.

rumbleinthrjungle · 06/07/2014 14:18

Tens disposable pants, at least you can sleep without worrying. Towels aren't that comfortable to sleep on.

Have a Brew and Cake and I hope your day gets better.

DigitConfusion2 · 06/07/2014 14:30

Yes to tranexamic acid, lifesaver for me, and a tena lady pad on top of your thickest pad Flowers

ScarlettOHorror · 06/07/2014 15:18

Tenalady night time and ask to be referred for a hysteroscopy. I had horrendous bleeding and they found polyps and all sorts. I'm five weeks post hysterectomy and loving not having periods.

CarbeDiem · 06/07/2014 18:08

I got mefenamic acid prescribed by the GP. Started a few days before my period was due it took my flooding away. It can make your period last a few days longer but it's worth it to slow down the flow.

SnowyMouse · 06/07/2014 18:12

tranexamic acid here too (and mefanamic acid).

Lovecat · 06/07/2014 18:24

tranexamic acid and tena lady pants for nighttime - although the acid has worked wonders, I still have at least one flooded night rather than the six I used to have before I took it (don't like sleeping with a tampon in, paranoid about TSS) and it saves a ruined sheet.

MehsMum · 06/07/2014 18:42

Another vote for a trip to a different GP. Heavy flow is miserable: that stumble to the lav in the small hours to assess the damage.

Hope you find something that works.

Sizzlesthedog · 06/07/2014 18:49

Gosh, I'm really surprised by these comments. I use super plus extra and a pad, and I wake up in the middle of the night flooding. I had no idea that it wasn't normal for heavy periods.

Maybe a trip to the gp is necessary. But I've been like since puberty.

CarbeDiem · 06/07/2014 19:06

Sizzle - Medically it's called Menorrhagia. There's lots of info about it out there. Plus advice on when and why you should see a GP.

I never got a reason why I suffered. It lasted a few years then suddenly just stopped (returned to normal) although I have my suspicions it's to do with losing 4 stones in weight. I was very overweight when it started - I lost weight quite quickly- I then had normal bleeding.

SwiftRelease · 06/07/2014 19:13

Like aizzle, i thought this was normal! (Maybe it is?) i am ok in day with suoer/super plus woth pad and change every 2-4 hrs but obv as night-time longer, i can leak or yes wee hours rush to see damage... So been known to use 2 at once. I know. Shouldnt. Never thought of seeing doc about it!

toomanypasswords · 06/07/2014 19:13

After my c-section and also after a MMC was 'induced' (can't remember the real term) and I was bleeding heavily, I wore the Tena Lady pants. Not attractive but very absorbent. I've also slept either on a folded towel or on those maternity mats to absorb any leaks. For the last few years I've used a mooncup rather than tampons and they are better, I think. Hope you're able to sort it soon!

NatashaGurdin · 06/07/2014 19:19

I've always had heavy periods; I also have fibroids and like PPs I find that a (large size) menstrual cup is much better than disposable protection for this.

I use washable pads as a back up as well to put my mind at ease but I've never had a cup overflow as they can hold a lot more blood than any disposable tampon or towel can.

I wish I had discovered them years ago.

SwiftRelease · 06/07/2014 19:24

Never knew mooncups held more. Tempted to try

Munchmallow · 06/07/2014 19:29

Although all this one eggcup full per period is complete bollocks

I no longer have periods thank god and they weren't particularly heavy, but I haven't a clue where that idea came from - an eggcup full every few hours is more like it.

awsomer · 06/07/2014 19:32

Poor you! Do you have a lot of pain with it too or is it mostly the heaviness that's the problem?

You def need to see the GP again and get a referral to gynaecology, don't accept anything less.

They might suggest the coil, it's helpful with heavy bleeding... supposedly. Maybe do some research on it before you go so you feel prepared to make a decision incase they suggest it?

SwiftRelease · 06/07/2014 19:36

Look, don't want to put Op off getting medical advice but surely if you use super/plus in daytime you're just gonna leak at night as about double the time. Why does that mean fibroids??

Fourarmsv2 · 06/07/2014 19:37

I can fill a mooncup hourly in the day but overnight the mooncup plus two nighttime pads seems to be OK. On the worst days I will put a re useable nappy booster in too - that gets saturated before pads whereas you can't layer pads in top of each other because of plastic backing. I slightly overlap the pads by an inch or so though. Rubbish isn't it!

Losing weight has made it worse - too do with oestrogen released from fat cells I think?

Fourarmsv2 · 06/07/2014 19:38

Ignore spelling mistakes!

domoarigato · 06/07/2014 19:40

Erm, wouldn't taking aspirin be counterproductive?

awsomer · 06/07/2014 19:42

It doesn't mean fibroids/polyps/endometriomas/etc, Swift but at night the chance of flooding should be reduced as you are less active. In fact the flow and volume should decrease during any prolonged periods of inactivity.
As flooding is a regular night time occurrence for OP it's worth her getting checked out, just in case.

Sizzlesthedog · 06/07/2014 19:43

Well I've been like this for 25 years. I thought you bleed more at night as you are going longer between changes iykwim.

I have seen gp who all said it's normal. After children it would lessen. If anything its worse. I dread the initial stand up from lying and quick dash to the loo with legs clamped together.

Orangeanddemons · 06/07/2014 19:43

I take tranxanamic acid, but still have 2 nights of flooding. I make a nappy thing out of 5 pads, and use Ultra linkers. Still flood though. I don't get the egg cup either. I feel that I lose nearer a pint glass full

CroydonFacelift · 06/07/2014 19:45

For a few days each period I wear a super tampax, thick night time towel, big granny pants and old PJ bottoms, and put a towel on the bed.

Worth getting checked out - but I have had loads of tests, nothing wrong. I just bleed heavily.
