Or is Ocado?

I will start by saying that I'm not a fanatical meat washer or even particularly paranoid about germs but I'm now doubting my own ( admittedly lax) standards!!
One thing I always do is keep cooked meat and raw meat separate, even in their packaging and when shopping I pack raw meat on its own with nothing else. They go on different shelves in the fridge too
My Ocado delivery came this morning and there was cooked and raw meat in a bag together, actually 2 bags were like this. The packaging generally was a bit odd - in one bag was tomatoes, raw chicken, ham and a tin of chickpeas ( do want you can with that Ainsley Harriott) and in another cooked chicken and raw mince.
I'm not sure if I've just not noticed before or it's never happened but I think I would have as it's something I'm careful of.
Anyway, I rang Ocado to be told that their " food scientists" have researched This and it's not an issue at all. I'm obviously not the first person to ask as she had the answer ready.
So wise mumsnetters - is it safe to stick a packet of ham on top of a sealed pack of raw chicken? I thought I knew the answer but have Ocado " food scientists" proved me wrong??

I've never noticed how my shopping is packed. Seems about 50/50 notice or are concerned in this thread, so im surprised supermarkets don't take more care. Wouldn't hurt to keep all raw meat stuff separate.

BeanyIsPregnant · 03/07/2014 17:55

Mhm, I'm not sure I would notice it if my shopping was delivered that way unless everything was slimy but equally I always make an effort to pack seperatly..

fourforksache · 03/07/2014 18:24

littlepeas, mainly I shop in tesco, their chickens seem to be wrapped in something like strong clingfilm. they are always soggy on the bottom. I put them separately in the trolley but I agree, some cross contamination I'd inevitable. I just have to make sure the fruit and veg is washed well.

but if I was paying ocado to do the job for me I'd expect them to take more care.

BoomBoomsCousin · 04/07/2014 14:18

I don't like it either OP. I've had raw meat packaging split before and sometimes the cold foods are a little damp and you can't really be sure whether it's just condensation or a leak. When that happens I call them up and ask for a refund whilst complaining bitterly about it.

In any case I wash whatever things it was in with before I put them in the fridge.

If I were packing my own I'd just wrap it in another bag before putting it in with other fridge foods, so I don't know that it's really much different than an already sealed pakage. But I don't like it

In every feedback survey I get I tell them I don't like the way they package meats and cleaning products in with other foods, especially fruit and veg (but I rant on about their packing a lot, so it's probably filed in the bin).

Trooperslane · 04/07/2014 14:23

I thin yab a bit U.

But I'm arfing at the Ainsley Harriot joke Grin

Kif · 04/07/2014 14:26

I agree with you. Whether its leaked or not - best practice is raw meat separate and cleaning products separate.

HeyN0nny · 04/07/2014 14:36

I hate this too. I have phoned up and complained. I've had refunds at least three times for split packaging of raw meat and at least twice from cleaning products. The delivery drivers tell me that they get lots of complaints so it's not just us! It does put me off using ocado so it's very short-sighted of them.

ExcuseTypos · 04/07/2014 14:41

I've complained about the same thing and was given the same answer.

It put me off shopping with them tbh and just do my own now. I would never put raw food in with veg, fruit or cooked meats. It's orrible!

ExcuseTypos · 04/07/2014 14:43

And I agree it's short sighted of them.
You're spending a lot of money and they are saying "we don't care what your preferences are, you are getting your food all mixed up.

BettyBolognese · 04/07/2014 14:53

I really dislike this and it's one of the reasons I know longer do internet shopping. The number of times I've picked up meat in supposedly sealed boxes in supermarkets and got covered in juices is too numerous to count. I therefore don't want them in a bag with fresh fruit and vegetables so they can leak or drip all over it.

Norland · 04/07/2014 16:22

Hmm, don't use Ocado anymore but it sounds as though their standards have slipped. They always used to separate into logical food-groups (with different coloured bags) perhaps the move to utilising Morrisons rather than just Waitrose has had a knock-on effect (coupled with their inability to turn a profit)

Why not ask your local butcher if he does deliveries? And the local dairy too? You could try Abel & Cole who we use (but rarely for meat, that's why the butcher's shop is there)

jellymcsmelly · 06/07/2014 15:32

littlepeas I don't sit mine together in the trolley when I'm shopping! Keep the raw meat very separate from other things. I don't think it is anal, just good hygiene sense.

paxtecum · 06/07/2014 16:51

Ocado are incredibly stubborn about this.
The Food Standards Agency recommends that raw meat is packaged seperately, but Ocado insist they know better.

Customers have even complained to Environmental Health about this and Ocado fob them off too.

They must lose so many customers by continuing with this packaging policy, but are adamant they know best.

I now use Riverford Organics, Abel & Cole, Sainsbury's, Asda & Tesco.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 06/07/2014 19:49

Packaging is awful with ocado. I really want to like them and go through periods of using them. Things will be ok for a few weeks and then I'll get £15 of soft fruits delivered squashed to bits in with a bottle of bleach and and a smashed carton of cream

Normally the delivery driver doesn't notice until it's been trampled through the house. And it's usually on a day when I'm expecting guests, so I have to drag my 18 month and 5 month old out it the shops after cleaning up, thus completely obviating the whole online shopping experience

They're very nice and always refund things but the sheer wastefulness of it is absolutely galling.

Oh - and don't get me started when they turn up professing that there was absolutely no bread whatsoever in the whole warehouse as a substitution - so no bread.

My local sainsburys doesn't have the same choice. But, they have sensible people doing the packing (everything from my local one is very carefully done and neatly separated) and these self-same people make intelligent substitutions.

Smallpinkdragon · 12/11/2022 09:58

I just googled this as just started ordering from Ocado and have had raw chicken in the same bag and on top of fresh fruit. The chicken is sealed but the fresh fruit bags have air holes in. That is so unhygienic, and if that's their response I won't be ordering from them again. Imagine if a supermarket had raw chicken packets piled on top of bags of apples in their shop!
