to make my dc wear stained clothes

DT have 3 weeks left of term

they wear white polo shirts to school and are in reception, I have been replacing and chucking very worn ones out during the year so they are always clean and tidy but they are down to three each which means a bit of effort washing and ironing in week, eg last night I washed on through by hand for today

one has cone home with black marker pen on it, until the end of term aibu to make him still wear it and not open my stash of lovely new shirts for September?

Ynbu

Oldraver · 03/07/2014 13:10

Oh I discount the black markerpen (is it whiteboard pen ?) as a stain as you cant get the stuff out so cant be throwing things when they get marked

Titsakimbo · 03/07/2014 13:13

Agree with Oldraver.

Marker pen doesn't count. And bet your dt aren't the only ones with marked clothes.

ComeHeather · 03/07/2014 13:13

Totally fine and normal. (Used to be a teacher).

If you are worried mention it to the teacher, who will say don't worry that's what everyone does!

Same with shoes that are on their last legs, too small jumpers, too short trousers etc.

But if you do want new for September, buy now whilst deals are on. I got polo shirts for next term very cheap this week in a supermarket!

But he's not going wear them til next term so we can at least start the year looking decent.

CheeryName · 03/07/2014 13:14

Whiteboard pen doesn't count as a stain.

My DC wear non-stained clothes for school trips, performing assembly, Ofsted and photos.

Apart from that, its school, they are just going to get stained again anyway! (Their clothes ARE clean. Just stained iyswim)

MuddlingMackem · 03/07/2014 13:15

YANBU. But I do think YHBU in throwing out marked ones. Grin

As long as they've been washed they're perfectly wearable with stains, after all, they're only going to get more stains on them so what does it matter.

(Disclaimer: I say this as someone who had both kids in cloth nappies and just couldn't get worked up about poo stains on washed nappies as they were just going to get more poo on, and I find this same approach to bolognese sauce and whiteboard pen on school polo shirts does wonders for my stress levels and our bank balance. Grin

Sorry, just saw that you have bought already for Sept! Do not open them. New uniform cannot be worn in July. It's against the law. Or something. All children look ragged in July.

superbagpuss · 03/07/2014 13:19

thanks

what supermarket did you go to for shirts, could get mine now

I only throw out the terrible ones that are to gone to rescue Grin.

Our school advised us to send dcs in uniform (non compulsory) so that it didnt matter if they got stained whilst at school - theyd all end up a bit ramshackled by the end of the term anyways so best to stain cheap supermarket uniform than their main clothes.

Stinkle · 03/07/2014 13:21

YANBU

My DD has a few paint and whiteboard stains on her tops that I can't get out.

Her shoes are also looking decidedly sorry for themselves but they still fit and her jumper sleeves look like they've had a row with her wrists, but we've only got about 3 weeks left.

Most of the children in our school are looking a bit jaded, we're all desperately trying to get to the end of term without having to crack open the new stuff until September

super it was Sainsburys, but I did buy the absolute value range ones...4.50 for 3.

They'll still get filthy and not wash out despite overnight in a bucket of Vanish, so I won't waste my money on anything more expensive.

MuddlingMackem · 03/07/2014 13:27

OP, I've found Asda best for the plain white polos. They seem to be quite long compared to the width which works well for my kids, and they do generally wash and last really well.

Our polos have to do two years as I have two children who each get a year out of them. I've never yet thrown any out before DC2 has outgrown them, no matter how stained. LOL! I just keep the really bad ones for the days I'm told in advance there will be painting. Grin

Gileswithachainsaw · 03/07/2014 13:31

Yanbu. Dd looks. State at the moment but i wasn't spending £40 on shoes for six weeks after half term and her cheap ones have all peeled.

Jumpers are also looking worse for wear.

Uniform will all be new and well fitting come September but this late in the year, it's washed obviously but that's it.

MrsWinnibago · 03/07/2014 13:33

YANBU. Both my DDs look like little messes at the moment. one has a flappy shoe strap and ALL her dresses are market somehow...they're clean but like yours have the odd marker or whatever on them, I will be buying new everything for September and not before!

NeedsAsockamnesty · 03/07/2014 13:36

YANBU they are meant to look a bit grubby at the end of a school year and marker pen does not count.

mumtobetothree · 03/07/2014 14:02

YANBU...Mine's in reception and muddling on in a mixture of pumps and trainers as I refuse to buy £30-£40 shoes for three weeks use, when I just know she'll outgrow them over the holidays lol!

Likewise her blue checked dress is looking a little tired, as are a couple of her blouses, but they come into rotation with the rest of the stuff when needed...like you I've been replacing all year but I'm not for the last three weeks

Notso · 03/07/2014 14:14

DS1 came home on the first day of term with bolognese sauce on his front and ground in mud on his back.
It didn't come out, and I didn't throw it away.

Oldraver · 03/07/2014 14:18

notso sunlight works wonder on any tomato based stains or just cover with a jumper

I think they should ditch the impractical outfit of white polo shirt and stiff trousers or skirt in favour of something more child-friendly.

Why do under tens need to look businesslike?

I see that senior schools should have something smarter but under tens? I think that jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt or t shirt in bright colours with non branded trainers or waterproof shoes/boots would be FAR preferable.

The default for most state schools is just not good....not comfy and not attractive.

yomellamoHelly · 03/07/2014 14:34

Dcs clothes have marker stains and various holes and generally look very knackered. No way are they getting the new stuff 'til September though!

DefiniteMaybe · 03/07/2014 14:58

All 5 of ds polo tops are now really stained and far too short but its July and I refuse to buy new. He'll look really smart in September but for now noone cares.
