to make shepherd's pie for tea in July?

Made shepherd's pie last night. DH was Hmm but managed to force it down Grin.

It hadn't crossed my mind that it was a 'winter' food. I'm still making soups and pies and chillis and stuff for dinners, and we're barbecuing and having salads and stuff too but mainly at the weekend. It's not a bloody heatwave!

Do you have a 'summer wardrobe' and a 'winter wardrobe' of recipes?!

Funny you should say this, I've just got home from shopping and bought some lamb mince for shepherds pie Grin

Ilovehamabeads · 03/07/2014 10:45

We had shepherds pie too last night. I tend to do more meat and salad type meals in summer but there's only so much salad I can take. Sometimes I just want something 'hearty' :)

Hassled · 03/07/2014 10:45

The only reason you were being unreasonable is because Shepherd's Pie is disgusting, not because it's July - I bloody hate it. Minced lamb is the food of the devil.

Anyway - no, I have no summer wardrobe of recipes. I keep on churning out my usual dull spag bol/chicken curry repertoire to appease the household Fussy Eater - if I produced a salad he'd implode.

MagicMojito · 03/07/2014 10:56

It's never unreasonable to make shepherds pie. Ever.

What IS unreasonable is when people say they are making shepherds pie, when really they have made a cottage pie!!

Infuriating fuckers Angry Angry Angry

IHeartKingThistle · 03/07/2014 11:21

Yay! I feel justified!

teenagetantrums · 03/07/2014 11:25

I made it last night as teenage daughter requested it, im so bored of thinking what to make for dinner if anybody else makes a suggestion am happy to comply.

iggy155 · 03/07/2014 11:27

I made a hotpot on Tuesday. I am the only one who cooks in my house so if anyone doesn't like it then tough!! Wink

murphys · 03/07/2014 11:34

No No not at all. Just to clarify was it shepherds pie or cottage pie?Wink

Its summer temperatures here 80% of the time and I make pies, curries and that sort of food. You cant eat salad ALL the time Wink.

Crinkle77 · 03/07/2014 11:37

I love shepherds pie but it is a bit warm at the moment for me. I just don't want big, hot meals. I am eating light means and salads but I am getting bored of it. If the weather cools down I will be making stuff like shepherds pie again though.

Mrsgrumble · 03/07/2014 11:37

I am contemplating cooking stew! But I probably won't.
YANBU, I do dinner like Shepards pie all year.

IHeartKingThistle · 03/07/2014 11:38

At the risk of incurring the wrath of MagicMojito, I must admit it was a cottage pie. Not sure why I called it a shepherd's pie.

Do I have to leave the thread now?

I am glad that other people cook 'gravy' meals in the summer. No way I could go from June to September with no gravy. Life wouldn't be worth living.

DS1 (20) would completely agree with you. It's his favourite dinner.

To me, shepherd's pie is made with lamb, and cottage pie is made with beef.

It's always cottage pie in our house, though DH insists on calling it shepherd's pie.

DramaAlpaca · 03/07/2014 11:40

DS1 would agree with you on the gravy as well. Gravy with almost everything Grin

Provencalroseparadox · 03/07/2014 11:41

I gave my DCs shepherd's pie for dinner on Tuesday. They wolfed it down.

I do make more salads in summer though.

OhFFSWhatsWrongNow · 03/07/2014 11:42

I cool whatever I fancy and don't give a thought to whatever season it maybe.

OhFFSWhatsWrongNow · 03/07/2014 11:43

May be. Not maybe Hmm

OhFFSWhatsWrongNow · 03/07/2014 11:44

Ffs and cook not cool! Stupid autocorrect Angry

dawndonnaagain · 03/07/2014 11:44

I have promised Cowboy Pie for tomorrow night, a variation of Shepherds Pie.

Thenapoleonofcrime · 03/07/2014 11:45

We just eat the same repertoire of about 5 recipes all year round. The idea that there might be a summer menu, as well as a summer wardrobe (the white jeans are rather straining I noticed this year) is doing my head in. I wish I didn't know about this!

murphys · 03/07/2014 11:45

Yes, gravy matters Wink

FunkyFlanFlinger · 03/07/2014 11:52

ooh! We nearly had Cottage pie last night, but I did a Gammon in Pepsi Cola instead in the slow cooker. Having it cold with salad, new potatoes, coleslaw and pickles. Also doing a pasta dish for those who don't fancy the gammon. Leftover pasta is then tomorrow's packed lunch.

You notice that, a slow cooker recipe and leftover food idea on the same post, so Mumsnet is clearly rubbing off on me

MagicMojito · 03/07/2014 12:09

Grin Wink

Well I suppose it would be abit harsh to have to leave your own thread...

BeanyIsPregnant · 03/07/2014 12:12

I hope not.. It's what I'm cooking for dinner tonight!!

JacktheLab · 03/07/2014 12:19

Totally reasonable, I really never know what to cook in the summer, I'm a cold weather cook Grin
