To think this is a elf n safety step too far

DS1 starts juniors in Sept. Today I bought a new, larger book bag from school to accommodate extra books etc. Previously these have been provided with an across body clip on strap. These have now been abandoned as a health n safety issue, in case the kids accidentally strangle themselves, leaving the kids with the smallest ever hand held strap.

According to who was this a 'health and safety' issue? Because the HSE has a lovely myth page because they got so sick of hearing about this stuff.

IAmNotAMindReader · 03/07/2014 01:21

Most of the Elf n Safety gone mad issues are disproportionate responses to points raised by the HSE. The vast majority have sensible, simple solutions but someone panics or takes exception and it turns into the baby thrown out with the bath water in spectacular fashion.

Surely a handheld strap is worse from an h&s pov, since carrying a heavy weight in one hand unbalances the body and can lead to the spine twisting? Old-fashioned school satchels, worn on the back, with two shoulder straps were far better.

YABU for saying 'elf n safety' misses the point

Is the new alternative cheaper?

NewtRipley · 03/07/2014 05:58

Hmm
Apparently covers a lot of misconceptions

Mind you, IME, they hold the bags by the handle and then trip on the strap. Little kids are a little inept IME

NewtRipley · 03/07/2014 05:58

It's gorn mad, I tell you!

Icimoi · 03/07/2014 06:13

YABU for parroting "elf n safety". Keep away from the tabloids on this!

Japaninthesweep · 03/07/2014 06:20

Won't somebody think of the elves?!

pluCaChange · 03/07/2014 06:51

This is the second "health and safety" complaint I've seen on MN this morning. As with the other one: if you don't think it is a matter of health and safety, challenge school for hiding behind the definition.

Health and safety regulations are important. Neither you nor the school should be mocking them.

Oh, and if you don't like the bag, take it back and buy a backpack.
