i was at work today when I got a phone call at about 1pm

Sch-Good afternoon Mrs S. We're ringing because we're a bit concerned about dd2's back.

Me-Oh, what's she done?

S-There are a couple of red irritated patches.

M-Oh yes, she's got a couple of bites. I put some anthisan on them this morning.

S-Hmm. i thought they were probably mozzie bites, but maybe you might want a trip to the doctor's to make sure?

M-Really? She's a bit prone to bites, but usually OK with a bit of cream.

S-Well they're extremely red and swollen, and raised with a white head.

M-Oh, that sounds an awful lot worse than this morning. I finish work in half an hour, I'll come straight and collect her then to have a look.

S-Could you possibly be quicker? I don't think she needs to go home. I just need someone to come and give her some antihistamine ASAP.

M-I'll try and get hold of DH, he should be closer.

DH was indeed closer, and immediately went to the school with cream and medicine. He texted me to say she was staying at school and still needed collecting at the end of the day.

When I picked her up i immediately asked to see her back, which looked as it did this morning. So I figured the antihistamine had taken effect. But dh is home now and says it was exactly like that when he went in.

Clearly dd2 was making a bit of a fuss about itching, but surely that's not the sort of thing to demand parents home from work for, and suggest a trip to the doctor's. She has 2 small pink lumps, about 2-3mm across.

This is one of those situations where schools can't do right for doing wrong. She was obviously complaining about it enough for them to feel the need to check, if she had been scratching them they probably became angrier looking anyway.

Better to get things checked than have angry parents because they have got infected and nobody mentioned it!

I totally wouldn't have minded if they were angry looking from scratching, but DH says they weren't at all.

And surely waiting half an hour for me wouldn't have been terrible? I didn't think I was going to be able to get hold of DH so would have had to leave work and then go back at some point to do half an hour.

If they didn't someone would start a thread saying their school was negligent. A sign of the times I am afraid- brought on by parents.

I once had school call me and tell me to "pop" in from 10 miles away right away to look at a rash on dd's face which the school said was from running around. When I told them it would be a good 40 mins before I got there (I would have needed to do a lot of rearranging which obviously I would do if needed!) they decided it was nothing and no need for me to jump on the motorway and get her. It was all really strange.

Last week I needed to pick her up as she seemed genuinely unwell. I was at home, school's only 5 mins in the car, but I needed to load dd2 into the car, lock up etc., the sort of thing that may take a few mins. They sounded really cross when I said I would be 10 mins max. I know they don't want a sick child in school but I can't actually accelerate time.
