NC but a regular.

I have a rather bad womb prolapse. The damn thing feels like it's going to fall out. I have been waiting for a repair op since January (which involves a 3 day hospital stay and 6 weeks recovery) and was offered one in March but had to postpone as the date was in the middle of my Uni exams. Next offer was in May and that was cancelled as the consultant decided to take leave, the June date was cancelled for the same reason Hmm. As we are going on holiday later this month, the op has now been deferred to the end of August.

I had had a pessary ring in place which is a circular thing which holds me up and gives me a bit of security as it rather disconcerting to feel my womb poking out but the consultant insisted that I had it removed before the op to make sure there was no infection or erosion. This was removed in January. I did not bother to have it replaced as the op was pending so I have spent the last 6 months with extremely painful periods from hell and feeling very uncomfortable. I have had flu in the last two weeks and the coughing makes me feel quite worried that my womb is going to just shoot out so I decided to have another ring inserted now especially as we are going abroad for an active holiday (4 DC) and I would like to feel a bit more supported.

As we have recently moved, I changed GP surgeries last week and tried to make an appointment to have another ring put in place but was told that the only doctor who could do this procedure was going to be on holiday from next week for 3 weeks and had no appointments available before then. She will not be back before we go on holiday.

The GP surgery suggested contacting my old surgery to see if they could do it as I was not fully transferred on the system as yet. At the very least I could register with them as a temporary patient apparently so it should be fine.

So I contacted my old GP surgery, they had me still registered with them so said they would do it no problem. They did me a prescription for the ring which I picked up and I arrived there for my appointment with the nurse this morning psyched up to have it done (I hate this kind of stuff). Walked into the examination room and the nurse said I was not on her system, so I explained what the situation was but she said I would have to see the receptionist to register as a temporary patient before she would do anything so I went and she would call me back in 'later'. Quite pissed of at this as I thought she could of at least done it then I could have done the form.

Queued again at reception desk for 15 mins as massive queue and explained what the nurse said so receptionist goes out the back to talk to the admin staff. Waited there for about 20 mins while they discussed it amongst themselves and different receptionist then comes out and tells me that they can't do it as I am now registered with another surgery. I ask why I was told they would do it, she says because my notes have now been transferred they can't. I ask to be a temp patient, she says no as my new surgery is local as well and it is not their problem if they have not got someone to do it. I ask what she suggests I do then and she says she doesn't know. I am furious at this point especially as I was told by my new surgery that old surgery should do it as it is a 'necessary medical procedure' and tbh I am pretty sure they could have, they just did not want to put any effort into checking how. I was almost in tears of frustration at this point as this exchange has been going on in front of a queue of other patients. I then walk out loudly stating this it was 'disgusting'. V passive aggressive as DH says that I should have gone nuts and refused to leave until they did it.

She then called me 30 mins later and after I got home saying that they want to help me so will register me as a temp patient and I can have done it done this afternoon. I have told them to stuff it (but more politely) as why could they not have done that this morning?

New surgery have now just called me after I told them that old surgery refused (before they said they would do it) and have said they have someone to do it in two weeks time and I shall now wait for that appointment which is just before my holiday. I don't know they could not have sorted that out for me before instead of telling me to go back to the old surgery!

AIBU to be fucking furious at this?

Oh my goodness - my blood pressure went up just reading that!!
Apart from the fact that I do agree with your DH and maybe I would have asked to speak to the manager and senior partner, you were well within your rights to be extremely annoyed!

LastTango · 02/07/2014 12:09

So, actually, you were half way between the two. And you expect the NHS to be able to cope with that? You're having a laugh! They can hardly cope when things are straightforward!!!

MaidOfStars · 02/07/2014 12:13

I understand your annoyance but really don't understand your refusal to accept the afternoon slot? Cutting off one's nose to spite one's face?

WombleyWomb · 02/07/2014 12:16

Yes Maid probably.

Can't you do it yourself? My mum had a prolapse that she eventually a hysterectomy for. She had to put the rings in herself.

WombleyWomb · 02/07/2014 12:23

God I would love to House, hate getting my bits out at the GPs.

Will google it to check how to do it.

Yes Maid probably.

I would have been exactly the same. I hate that Kafka-like feeling of repeating yourself over and over again and coming up against a wall of bureaucracy. I don't cry very often but when I do it's with frustration. So no YANBU to be annoyed. Technically though they were probably following some kind of process but why surgery 1 couldn't have sorted this out with surgery 2 in a couple of phonecalls is a mystery.

Just crossed my legs so tightly I think they've moulded themselves together. Did I mention I am very squeamish?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 02/07/2014 12:32

yaBVu. Their policies didn't allow for you to do this routinely so they worked out an alternative and called you back.

By refusing it you are cutting off your nose to spite your face.

ChelsyHandy · 02/07/2014 12:38

YANBU the having to register and re-register every time you move is ridiculous. For instance, if I work away from home for two weeks, presumably I would need to register with my local GPs as a temporary resident in order to get health care, but undoubtedly the waiting list for doing so would be about six weeks in this area, so in effect I am without non-emergency health care.

Its an old fashioned system and more to do with the fact that the NHS's multi million pound computerised central records system didn't work. In most European countries you can go to a doctor wherever you are without this carry on in fact it might be quicker to get it done on holiday and just pay for it privately

biscuitsandbandages · 02/07/2014 12:57

No chelsy.
The temporary resident system is separate. If you are within in the uk but too far to reasonably travel to your registered surgery the Nhs has a very cool provision that by filling in a TR form (which is literally name and co tact details, address where you are staying and your registered surgery details) you can have access to that surgery for immediate necessary treatment (ie not 999 emergency but can't wait till you get home)

www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/how-do-i-register-as-a-temporary-resident-with-a-gp.aspx?CategoryID=68&SubCategoryID=158

It takes our surgery about 10 minutes to register a TR so we ask people to come down a little early and bring photo ID. That's as complicated as it gets.

MyFairyKing · 02/07/2014 13:00

I understand 100% why you are fed up with the situation but you were cutting your nose off to spite your face in declining this afternoon's appt. From the sounds of it, it wasn't anyone in particular's fault, it was just a system failure, so YABU to blame the surgery.

Swallow your pride and get it done.

Good luck

Itsfab · 02/07/2014 13:09

It isn't a case of swallowing pride. Why on Earth would she want someone to do an intimate procedure when they have already showed a lack of care by refusing to do it, not trying to find out how it could be done and by not having the empathy to know not to discuss a private matter in front of many people?

YouMakeMeHappy · 02/07/2014 13:11

YANBU!! I'm am cross just reading that! How bloody useless if them!
If they had a spot in the afternoon, why didn't they just do it in the morning while you were there?
I would complain, and I would've refused the offer too. And I would've cried with frustration.
But your holiday sounds fab! What do you mean by active? I love active holidays but ours are too little. We are off to Cornwall tomorrow though:) and will take them skiing once the youngest is four.

MyFairyKing · 02/07/2014 13:19

Sorry, I think I may have missed something. Did the nurse discuss it in front of all the patients waiting?

MyFairyKing · 02/07/2014 13:20

Oh OK, I did see that but it was the receptionist, not the nurse who discussed it right?

notaflamingclue · 02/07/2014 13:41

I'm a practice manager. Sounds to me like the receptionists / nurse didn't know how to handle it and so took the easiest (least work) route, i.e. refusing to do the procedure. Later on when someone who had a better attitude idea of the paperwork needed and your own circumstances was apprised of the situation, they called to say they would do it after all - temporary res in this situation is perfectly appropriate.

The NHS is a huge, megalithic organisation with ridiculous amounts of hoops for everyone to jump through, and GP practices have more than their fair share of those. Although it's not a straightfoward situation the receptionist (and especially the nurse, who should have known better) should have used her head a bit more and sorted out your TR.

YANBU to be really annoyed about the initial refusal but YABU to decline the later offer. You had nothing to gain by it and the practice were trying to rectify their mistake.

liz5029 · 02/07/2014 13:51

I ended up in A + E with a severe asthma attack last time I had to change GP's surgeries. It took them two months to transfer the paperwork across, both sets of receptionists were distinctly unhelpful; and refused to allow me an appointment/repeat prescription for my inhaler, despite me telling them it was running out, and the receptionists at the new surgery refused to agree to phone me when my records came through to let me know, so I had to phone them every morning after 10am, from my new job.
Basically because no one was willing to actually do anything I probably ended up costing the NHS more money through an emergency A+E visit. There really should be some procedure in place to stop patients, particularly ones with chronic conditions, from struggling to access basic needs when they move house.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 02/07/2014 14:00

I've just moved GPs and luckily they use the same system as my old one so the records are already there.

However I keep all my letters from hospital etc in a folder so when I change GPs they can just photo copy it and it's all there to see, rather than wait weeks for the records to transfer.

notaflamingclue · 02/07/2014 14:18

liz5029 your old practice should have continued to prescribe for you. I would complain to your PCT about that (or LHB in Wales), it was a dangerous and neglectful thing to have you run out of your medication. It should be classed as a significant event and should have been investigated.

DroppingIn · 02/07/2014 14:26

I think what probably coloured my judgement was a few years back, we moved house while I was heavily pregnant and forgot to change my address with my GP's surgery. We moved 2 miles away.

When DS4 was 4 days old and very blocked up and wheezy, I took him down to see the GP and was asked to register him before we were seen, which was fine. When I gave the receptionist back the form, she saw the address on it and said as we now lived out of the surgery area, the GP would not see him and we would have drive across town to the walk-in centre and wait hours.

We were not aware we would have to change surgeries and I was utterly disgusted they would not see a tiny newborn.

notaflamingclue · 02/07/2014 15:03

I find these stories extraordinary. There is no way on earth we would refuse to see a newborn. There are some terrible practices out there.

waitingforwombat · 02/07/2014 15:06

Ugh, what a nightmare.

Not quite sure why your new surgery is telling you that only one GP can insert a ring pessary. It really isn't that hard, especially if you have already been "fitted" and have the right size - not much different to putting in a moon cup. Can you call and clarify its just an insertion, not a fitting, and that is a ring pessary (not a shelf which are MUCH trickier) and ask if it can be expediated?

wobblyweebles · 02/07/2014 16:39

They climbed down, and called you back with an offer of help.

You now need to climb down, call them back, and accept their offer of help.

Marylou62 · 02/07/2014 18:33

As an x nurse and pro NHS (lived in countries with out an NHS and we are lucky..).But it is not perfect and I have had my own issues with the system too. This is very frustrating and shouldn't have happened but these things do happen...I have a very similar story which I wont bore you with and the feeling of utter frustration when you see something should be so simple...I would speak to the practice manager .....then let it go....you got there in the end.
