Doctor miss diagnosed hfm

Ds I think has hand foot and mouth, was is with doctor yesterday, he said sore throat and perscribed antibiotic, today ds has blisters on his hands and feet,

Waiting for a call back, but internet seems to say he would have had blisters in his mouth yesterday, as they come up two ish days before blisters on hands and feet,

I am a bit annoyed, there is hfm going do gp should have been aware it was possibility, even if no blisters surely I should have been told about possibility of hfm, what to look out for and how to treat,

I don't like giving antibiotics unnessesarily and again internet says no need for antib just pain relief, so now ds is on antib that he may not need, but I am giving anyway as doc hasn't rang back,

Aibu to be annoyed, it wasnt regular gp and I am cross due to sick child lack of sleep etc anyway

I only buy local organically raised meat too, we eat very little, and if I could ensure that DD2, with her tendency to be anaemic, could get enough iron from a veggie diet, I would go veggie.

Stratter5 · 02/07/2014 12:44

Well, if you're that against antibiotics and have diagnosed him with such certainty yourself, just tell him not to take the antibiotics and give him some Paracetamol.

NO!

The ABs have been prescribed by a GP, who probably knows what he's doing considerably better than a bunch of internet randoms. He will be fully aware of AB misuse, and won't have prescribed them unnecessarily. Not finishing a course of ABs is a great way of helping resistant ABs along their journey.

MaidOfStars · 02/07/2014 12:48

Just to clarify, my previous comment wasn't intended as judgement on anyone's meat-eating habits.

MaidOfStars · 02/07/2014 12:50

Not finishing a course of ABs is a great way of helping resistant ABs along their journey.

This, definitely, You need to kill all the bugs, not just half of them and leave the others happily developing resistance.

MyFairyKing · 02/07/2014 12:53

I know you said were BU but then said you'll try not to 'bite the GP's head off'? What?! Poor doctor....!

ChelsyHandy · 02/07/2014 12:53

I was rather thinking, with the OP's medical knowledge as gleaned off google and her worries about antibiotic resistance, she would have prevented her ds from starting the course of antibiotics, since she believes there has been a misdiagnosis.

Mmmbacon · 02/07/2014 13:01

Ok seems I have started antib thread,

I am wary of giving ds antib as when he needs them.he really needs them so over perscription could cause effectiveness issues, which could be dangerous, waiting on ent consultation as air way blockage and sleep apnoea risk factors, definately not pfb syndrome

re internet says, I checked syptoms on patient.co.uk and another site which my gp said are reliable source of info

Anyway conceed to being unreasonable,

I think you have to trust the GP on this one. They don't hand on ABs willy nilly.

Stratter5 · 02/07/2014 13:21

Personal 'over prescription' won't cause ineffectiveness. What causes that is misuse leading to resistance. If you stop the course now, you could well cause it, as you will then allow any bacteria, that are developing resistance, to flourish.

Please finish the course, and have a little more faith in the GP, from what you have said he has done the right thing

Numanoid · 02/07/2014 13:30

I don't know enough about hand, foot and mouth to be of much help, but personally, I think YANBU to be annoyed.

I've had back pain for over 2 years for which each GP I've seen has given a different cause. Eventually I was told "take painkillers to mask the pain, we don't know what's causing it". I then paid for a chiropractor for a while, he found the cause and it helped, but it was too costly to continue long-term.
I've also recently had a more pressing health problem and all my GP can tell me is "I have absolutely no idea what's wrong" after various tests and symptoms. Finally been given a hospital appointment though, after months of being told "no idea". :)

Maybe you and I just need to change GPs, bacon ! Grin

I caught HFM from a baby who's mum refused to accept he had it and low immune system picked it up. The blisters came on my hands and feet first and were coming up in my mouth when I was at the dr and by the time I got home my mouth was agony.

arethereanyleftatall · 02/07/2014 16:41

Please don't ever stop antibs half way through!! Always finish the treatment even if you're better.

Jollyphonics · 02/07/2014 17:33

So numanold , your GP didn't know what was causing your current symptoms, did various tests but the diagnosis still wasn't clear, so he/she referred you to the hospital? Appalling treatment, should clearly be stuck off!

Jollyphonics · 02/07/2014 17:36

OP YABU. What if the GP had said "I can see ulcers in your child's mouth. This looks like bacterial tonsillitis, but it could be the early stages of viral HFM, so I'm not giving you any antibiotics", then your child had got much worse with raging tonsillitis? You'd no doubt be on here saying the GP was wrong for not prescribing antibiotics in the first place.
Doctors are clinicians, not psychics.

I assume you reported the cause of the problem back to your GP, where s/he was able to then deliver appropriate treatment? I'm sure s/he would be grateful to hear a chiropractor's medical diagnosis..... Wink

MaidOfStars · 03/07/2014 18:12

I dread the day I see my apparent misdiagnoses being complained about on the internet

"Apparent" being the key word there. The title of this thread is VERY misleading - the GP did not "misdiagnose".

taxi4ballet · 03/07/2014 18:31

Now he has started the antibiotics he needs to finish them.

The problem of increasing resistance of germs to antibiotics is contributed to by people not finishing their course.

If you take the whole course it kills them off. If you stop half-way through, then the germs get a little dose but don't die and can begin to develop a resistance to it.

sashh · 03/07/2014 18:35

Yes but EVERYTHING is a possibility, also just because blisters normally appear in the mouth first doesn't mean int happened for your son - did you notice any?

macdoodle · 03/07/2014 19:29

Why did you go and see the GP with a short history of a sore throat, what were you wanting if not antibiotics? You do know they don't have a magic wand right? You are being unreasonable and complety ridiculous.

Stratter5 · 03/07/2014 20:28

next time

ask the gp if it is ok to wait 24hrs before starting the abs

that way, you have the script but can wait and see

a lot of GPs prefer this approach
